Got this from a friend:
Just for your info, we heard this from a Scottish Speaker at a DAR meeting.
In
Scotland when you have the name "Fitz" it meant the child born on the other
side of the blanket. The bastard child, the father wasn't married to the
mother, but they (Scottish) acknowledge their children whether legal or
illegitimate and the children born not to the married mother was
FITZGERALD -
Gerald's child born to him by another woman other than his married wife. It
also helped if his wife didn't provide a male heir, the the "FITZ" child
became
the heir, etc.

Dear Cousins,
Here is some information I have gathered on surnames from the Mensa
International Journal.
Surnames are usually passed down through the family line by way of the
father's family name and were derived from many sources including:
Christian names (Donald, Adam, Gerald, Edward)
Occupations (Carpenter, Glover, Smith)
Places (Forest, Clough, Lake)
Animals (Fox, Deer),
Colors (Black, White, Green)
Quantities of mind or body (Bright, Smart, Little).
Often the Christian name and a form of the word for "son of" added to it
constituted the new family name (Donaldson, Adamson).
In England and Ireland "son of" is often "Fitz" (Fitzgerald) from the French
(Norman) "fils", pronounced "fiss".
In Wales "ap" or "ab" denoted "son of" (Dafydd ab Roderick, Dafydd ap
Richard, Dafydd ap Rhys). Eventually, the "ab" and "ap" were shortened to "b"
or "p" which changed the names to: Broderick, Pritchard, and Price (Prhys).
Welsh surnames were also formed by adding "s" (the mark of an ancient
genitive) to Christian names as in Jones, Roberts and Philips.
In the Scottish Highlands, "Mac" indicating "son of" is still very popular
(MacDonald, MacWilliam). However, if the letter following the
"c" of the "Mac" is not capitalized, the latter part of the name is
not a Christian name but instead has an occupational derivation. Examples:
Macnab (son of the abbot), Macintyre (son of the carpenter) and
Macpherson (son of the parson).
In Ireland, "son of" is usually "Mc" (McBrien, McDonnel, McNeill). However,
at one time in Ireland the head of the clan was the grandfather. "O" means
"grandson of" as in O'Brien, O'Donnel, and O'Neill.
Hope this helps! :-)
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Dear Cousins,
Here is a web address for those doing Irish ancestry research:
www.ireland.com/ancestor/index.htm
I hear it is very good for researching Irish surnames and their variations.

Hi everyone,
Looking for further information on the following families:
Ivory Clough (b: 1820) and Phebe Jane McKenney (b: 1825), my GGG grandparents. I am looking for their death dates. I found them in the 1880 census in Biddeford, York Co., ME. They lived in Ward one of Biddeford, Enumeration District No. 181, page 11, lines 22, 23, 24, and 25. Ivory is listed with his wife Phebe, grandson Willie H. Jeffrey and granddaughter Ella May ______.
Lydia Jane Clough (b: 1844), daughter of Ivory and Phebe. She married William Eleazer Jeffrey 28 Jun 1860 in York Co., ME. I have looked high and low and can not find them in the census. What happened to this family?
Howard Fremont Jeffrey (my G Grandfather) born 1861 in Kennebunkport, son of William Eleazer Jeffrey and Lydia Jane Clough. He died 29 Jul 1900 in North Platte, Lincoln Co., NB and buried 31 Jul 1900 in North Platte Cemetery. He married Etta Ida Stuart 18 Apr 1893 in North Platte, Lincoln Co., NE, she died 16 Dec 1942 in Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA and buried 21 Dec 1942 in Mountain View Cemetery, Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA. I would like to know if he had any siblings, who they were and where they lived?
Other children of Ivory and Phebe:
Hartley Lord Clough b: 1840
Thomas William Clough b: 1851
James Franklin Clough b: 1851
Allie / Abbie / Addie Clough b: 1853
Any information on these children would also be appreciated.
Anything is more than I have right now and would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alice
Dear Cousins,
If you want a good Halloween fright, take a look at my picture and bio on the
Oxford Ancestors website! :-) When you bring up www.oxfordancestors.com,
click on About Us. I am at the bottom of that page.
We are still adding things to the site here and there, and hopefully they
will put up the new text I sent them for our Clough Surname Study, which
includes Rebecca's role. To find the current text on the Surname Study click
on Real Life Stories.
For a better version of the text for our Surname Study, and a chart of our
results, please go to the John Clough Genealogical Society website,
http://ourworld.cs.com/cloughgenl/, which is being kept up by George Estey.
Many thanks to George for all his hard work! :-)
Best Wishes to All,
Sheila
Dear Cousins,
Thanks to George Estey's abilities creating and managing our Clough website,
he has now put up the latest Clough DNA Surname Study results. Please feel
free to look! http://ourworld.cs.com/CloughGenL/surnames.html
If any of the participants would like their name on the results graph please
contact me. Otherwise, the results will remain anonymous.
Please look at our site periodically since we will be updating the results as
more come in.

The saga goes on..........
I have received a response from ABC regarding this mornings reply to their
non-reply. Here it is and my answer. Maybe they will finally get the
message. Who knows?
My reply to ABC follows:
Thank you for the COMPLETE text on the segment on "Good Morning America"
regarding DNA testing. This is nice to have, but it still does not answer the
questions I posed.
1. Where did Diane get the test done?
2. How does one get their on DNA tested?
3. Where does this seven daughter theory come from?
It is nice that Diane descends from One of the daughters, Helena and she is
related to David, but this form of trivia is not news. "News," for the
viewer, would have answered the above Questions.
Thank You,
George Estey

Well, "Around The Water Cooler" this morning, it has begun. Your personal,
individualized, genetic testing in which they can tell you the kind of
disease you might die from and when you're most likely to die from it. So,
would you want to know if you could do it? Well, journalist David Duncan
did want to know, and became the first healthy person to have his DNA
scanned for every known disease, and he wrote about it in this month's
issue of "Wired" magazine. He says it something all of us are gonna do
eventually.
(OC) So, good to have you with us, David. Okay.
07:49:57 DAVID DUNCAN, WIRED MAGAZINE
Nice to be here.
07:49:58 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) You make the decision to go in, let them take everything they know
about DNA and disease and scan yours to give you your future. Were you
scared?
07:50:08 DAVID DUNCAN
I was a little scared. I mean, I'm a journalist. I'm kind of a fatalist.
But once I got in there and started getting the results, I mean, I'm
finding out if I'm gonna get cancer, I'm finding out if I'm gonna get heart
disease. And it's all potentially in my genetics. So, yeah, I was a
little nervous.
07:50:23 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) And we should say that they do factor in other things, like how long
your family has lived right now to get how long you might live. So, that
it isn't just the DNA alone that will tell you these things?
07:50:32 DAVID DUNCAN
That's right. I mean, it's very complicated, obviously, how you're gonna
get a disease and die. But your genetics is, is the basis of it. What
your family history is is important. Environment. You know, lots of
factors.
07:50:43 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) Okay. I want to show everybody. I think we have a picture of you
getting swabbed, at the moment you're about to discover this. And then,
you get a computer chip that's basically you on a chip, right? That's . .
.
07:50:53 DAVID DUNCAN
Right. Mm hmm. This is me. And I, I keep it close to me 'cause it's me.
Now, inside these little tiny holes here is my DNA.
07:51:04 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) And, da du dump da dum, what did they tell you?
07:51:07 DAVID DUNCAN
Well, I found out, actually, mostly good news for me. I don't have a lot
of things, which is interesting. And you go into this thinking, okay, I'm
gonna find out I'm gonna have cancer. But I found out that I'm not gonna
get cancer, at least, genetically. But I did find out I have some heart
risk factor genes, I have diabetes type II, so I don't want to get fat and
sit on the couch too much. So, I did find I have some things hidden in me.
07:51:28 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) And life span?
07:51:29 DAVID DUNCAN
They told me, on a very rough scale, that I'm gonna be 88. I live to be
88.
07:51:34 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) Well, that's cheering, isn't it? Now, there's something else that
they do with this we should point out. There, apparently, there are seven
daughters of Eve, I think they call them, right? The sort of seven tribes
from very early on, and they can trace you to a tribe. And I took a
genetic tests. I got swabbed myself in my office the other day, and
discovered that one of these tribes is called what? Helena?
07:51:59 DAVID DUNCAN
Right.
07:51:59 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) And I am a daughter of Helena.
07:52:02 DAVID DUNCAN
And actually, we're related, because I was tested, too, for that. And what
this is, we all, you know, come from an evolutionary history. We all have,
we know about our immediate ancestors. But now they can trace us back, in
this case, to 20,000 years. And Helena lived in the Dordogne Valley of
France, and that's where . . .
07:52:19 DIANE SAWYER
(OC) And was a hunter.
07:52:20 DAVID DUNCAN
Right. Was a hunter. And that's where they grow wine. And they, her, her
people painted the cave paintings, those beautiful paintings we all heard
about.

Hello Cousins,
Friday I was fortunate enough to hear back from my contact at ABC. The
segment was cut from 5 minutes to 2 minutes because of Jimmy Carter winning
the Nobel Peace Prize and the shooting in the DC area. What was a bit
frustrating was her comment, "I didn't know Jimmy Carter would be getting the
Nobel Peace Prize or that there would be another shooting." Of course she
didn't! Even more frustrating is ABC's refusal to put a link to the Oxford
Ancestors website on their website.
A simple mention that the 'Seven Daughters of Eve' are the property of Dr.
Sykes and that Diane Sawyer's analysis was done at Oxford Ancestors would
have been sufficient - in fact, that is all we were hoping for. But instead,
we have gotten nothing in return for having done Ms. Sawyer's analysis and
bending over backwards to have her results in unheard of time.
Please let me know if any of you who requested additional information of ABC
get anymore responses. I will pass the information along to our England
office.
Best Wishes to All,
Sheila
Gosh Debbie what did you do to get that much? All I got back from them was
the e-mail I sent them? I don't know what kind of people ABC hires but my
guess is they're not too bright.
Cousin George
My response to ABC follows:
Hello,
I recently wrote to you asking questions about a Good Morning America topic
about DNA.
What I received back as an answer is the message I sent to you (see below).
Is there any possibility that the same person who cut to the commercial
before the topic was completed also responded to my e-mail?
Regards,
George Estey

Interested in help re parents of my grandmother Maude Clough Walls Spangler.
Her birth cert says her fathers name was William and her mothers maiden name
was Hutchison. Thank you. Irene Walls Barrett
<PRE>Sheila, Have you put the "process" information you sent about the Esteys and
how Oxford Ancestors works onto the CloughForum yet? I bet there are a lot
of Clough lines up against a brick wall like Rebecca and I have been, and the
DNA analysis might be helpful. I am very anxious to get my brother's back
before I make my trip to the East Texas genealogical library on the 22nd.
They may have some old newspapers, records about my great great grandfather
that could give me some more clues. Hopefully, Rebecca will know the results
before we get the results in the mail and can email me the findings. Susan

The Fitzpatric Clan is doing this also and have been doing if for over a
year. It sure takes a lot of time but then once one group does it - it then
balloons big time. What an age we live in now?????? Wonderful. But this
email is the first that I was able to understand. Thank you Sheila for the
easy reading.

George,
Creating an Estey Y-Line DNA Surname Study would certainly be beneficial.
Before contacting male Estey's you will need to appoint a Coordinator and
figure out who will pay for the analysis. If you will be asking male Estey's
to have the analysis done you may not also be able to ask them to pay for it.
Once that is clear then you can contact male Estey's about having their
analysis done. From there you find out what information they may have on
their Estey ancestry. You then compare the different Estey ancestry
information obtained from those interested in having the analysis done.
An agreement will need to be made with the individuals willing to be analyzed
regarding the sharing or anonymity of their results. If the analysis is done
through Oxford Ancestors the results will be sent directly to the individuals
who had the analysis so an agreement will need to be reached about whether
they will supply the Surname Coordinator with the results. Of course, this
is the whole reason for having them analyzed - so their results can be
compared with others.
Once the legalities are worked out between the Coordinator and the
individuals to be analyzed you then order analysis kits (hopefully from me
:-) ) to be sent either to the individuals being analyzed or to the Surname
Coordinator who would send them out to the individuals being analyzed.
After the individuals have done the buccal (cheek) swab they will need to
send their swab, consent form, personal check/money order, etc. to the
Coordinator so that the swabs can then be sent together in one bunch to be
analyzed. The more analysis done at once the lower the price for each
analysis.
When the results have come back the Coordinator may wish to use a program
like Excel or Lotus123 to grid the results and then compare them with the
ancestry information supplied by each of the participants.
Thank you for your interest! I'll be happy to assist you in any way I can.
Best Wishes,
Sheila

This is not a web page but a genealogy list for the surname Clough. DNA is
very important in the new age of technology. Rootsweb lists are run by
"owners of the list" or "list Moms" etc. Our List Mom runs this list as if
it belonged to all of us and we set the subject line. Sometimes its chatty
but most of the time it is of interest to most of us. We all have a delete
key and may use it as we choose. The history of this list..... it was
started because some were not allowed to share on another Clough surname
list. This list is wonderful and our "List Mom" is doing a terrific job -
(jobs) in all that she does. And she does wear many hats but it all comes
together for the Clough surname. We (most) still live in America and have a

Dear Cousins,
Good Morning America finally showed the Wired magazine segment this morning.
They showed the cover of the magazine and chatted with the author of the
article that mentions Dr. Bryan Sykes. The article mentions Dr. Sykes and
the results HE got for the articles author and how he and Sykes match. But,
the article doesn't mention anything about Oxford Ancestors doing the
analysis.
On this mornings show Diane Sawyer never mentioned that Oxford Ancestors did
her analysis or the interesting results she obtained from it. She mentioned
she is of the clan Helena but did not mention the additional information that
would have been interesting to viewers or the chart she received. Nor did
Diane or the articles author mention Dr. Sykes when speaking about the "Seven
Daughters of Eve." The Seven Daughters are Bryan's property, not the
scientific community's property, but they mentioned it as though the
scientific community came up with them.
Very disappointing segment, especially considering how we, Oxford Ancestors,
bent over backwards to get them the results they requested in unheard of time.
At least I had the tape recording the show, just in case. I will now send
the tape and magazine to our England office where they are just as
disappointed as I.
My apologies to anyone who feels this information is not valuable to the
group. It is because of the work of Oxford Ancestors that we who descend
from John Clough of Salisbury, MA now know that we are somehow genetically
related to the Richard Clough family of Denbigh, Wales. And, it is because
of them that Rebecca and I are continuing to have other Clough/Cluff/Clow
descendants analyzed in hopes of finding connections, not just for ourselves
but for others who have been searching for years.
May I remind everyone that the DNA analysis we had done, and continue to have
done, for Clough can be done for additional branches of your ancestral tree.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions at SheilaOA(a)aol.com. Also,
Oxford Ancestors has a new website up and running even though it is not yet
complete. At some point they will include my info and more pics of all of us
that work for them.
Best Wishes to All,
Sheila
Sheila,
I was looking at the Oxford Ancestors web page. I see they offer group
discounts. How would one coordinate such a venture? I would like to offer
this to the Esty discussion group.
