Thanks George. I'll run that by my Mom so she can work with it. She has
stumped on this for quite some time.

The First 'Clough/Cluff Family Trip'
Written by Sheila Andersen, JCGS Genealogist
It was a pleasure and an honor to lead this group to parts of England and
Wales!! Included in the group were: Waldo & LaRayne Call, Jane Clough, Linda
Freehling, Laura Gettner, Luanne Green, Susan Green, Rebecca Harpole (my trip
co-leader), Edward & Billie Jones, Priscilla Kaeser, Byron & Sylvia Kenney,
Bonnie Rooney, and Dawn Steiner.
Seven of us flew out of Logan Int. Airport in Boston together and the rest
flew from their respective airports from around the US. As we were flying
overnight and getting very little, if any, sleep, Rebecca had a good nights
rest and then caught a train from her home in England down to London where we
all finally met up on our arrival day. From that very first day I had a good
feeling about this group! Everyone seemed to strike up conversations with
each other easily and feel at ease in each other's company.
Day 1: That first day we ate lunch together at our hotel while I handed out
lots of information packets I had put together about places we would be
seeing as well as the booklet Rebecca put together that included all the
research she has done in London to date. The booklet corresponded with the
sights we were to see the next day. Then most of us took a bus tour around
London and saw many exciting places via a double decker bus.
Day 2: On our second day we took the walk-about with Rebecca. She showed our
group many Clough sites in London that she has spent many hours finding
information for. As mentioned above, to accompany this walk-about, Rebecca
put together a booklet that includes the details of her research and helped
clarify the possible connections these places have to our family. Included
in the many wonderful sites we saw were: St. Botolph's Aldgate, the church
where a John Clough was baptized in 1614; the street where he and his father,
James, lived; parts of the old Roman Wall; St. Alphage Cripplegate, the
church William Holdred, "who came with John Clough," (please see first volume
of 'Genealogy of Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Mass.') belonged
to; and many others. We then visited the Museum of London which does an
excellent job leading its visitors through the many stages of London's
history and development.
Day 3: For our third day we headed to northern Wales. Our trip was to take
much longer than we were lead to believe so we had to forgo seeing Valle
Crusis Abbey. When we finally made it to our northern Wales destination we
met members of the Williams-Ellis family, descendants of Richard Clough, Sr.,
at the family's manor Glasfryn. Jonathan and Helen Williams-Ellis now own
Glasfryn and were very gracious to allow us to view their home with its many
Clough family heirlooms. We were all in awe as we were given an enthusiastic
narration and tour of Glasfryn, the family treasures it holds, and family
tales by Roger Williams-Ellis, father of Jonathan. We were grateful to also
have Roger's wife, Jane, and brother, Richard, in attendance.
As if this was not awesome enough we were then treated to a special Welsh
Thanksgiving service at a nearby ancient church. There was not a dry eye in
the place when the organist played our national anthem in honor of those that
perished on Sept. 11. The presence of our little group from America was
viewed as an honor to their lovely congregation but it was we who felt
honored to be in their presence. It was also brought to our attention that
the ladies of the church put together a special altar for the victims of
Sept. 11 that included the Welsh and American flags.
Words cannot express how deeply we were all touched at the hospitality of the
Williams-Ellis family and the local congregation. Upon arriving at our hotel
that evening we appreciated having dinner together as a group to recount the
extraordinary experiences we had that day.
Day 4: Our fourth day was spent soaking in the sites of Caenarfon and Conwy
Castles and making use of our credit cards at the local shops. These castles
were among the first Norman castles built in Wales. When visiting castles
such as these it is hard to find words to describe how it feels to be in the
presence of such history.
Day 5: The next day we were again amazed by the outpouring of fellow feeling
for the tragic events that occurred in our country on Sept. 11 by seeing
another alter at the church in St. Asaph dedicated to those that died and
those that have helped in the rescue/cleanup. This is another church that
has been attended by Clough family members including Charles Butler Clough,
dean of St. Asaph Cathedral, and is also quite beautiful.
We headed into Denbigh on this day, hometown of Richard Clough, Sr. and his
children, where we enjoyed lunch together as a group. Some of us took the
walk up to Denbigh Castle to soak in and be amazed at the history that has
taken place within its walls and to be in awe of the beauty that it and the
neighboring countryside still sustains. While driving around Denbigh in our
coach bus we saw two houses built by Sir Richard Clough - Plas Clough and
Bach-y-Graig. Plas Clough is still owned and occupied by one of Sir
Richard's descendants, Ann Davies. Bach-y-Graig was the first Welsh home to
be built with brick. Another fine home we saw literally down the street from
Bach-y-Graig was Brinbella. It was built by one of Sir Richard's descendants
in part by tearing down portions of Bach-y-Graig.
The back roads of Wales are not much wider than sidewalks so we were amazed
at the skill with which our coach driver navigated them. As if the roads
were not narrow enough, we came to an intersection where Rebecca and Susan
got out of the bus and had to move some construction road signs in order to
make room for our large bus to continue down the road. Thank goodness our
driver, Derek, was good spirited!
After visiting Denbigh we stopped by St. Marcella's Church where, it is said,
Sir Richard Clough's heart is buried. Although we could not go in we walked
around the grounds.
We then headed down to Ruthin to walk around the town, visit the Visitors
Center, and view the Myddleton Arms, an ancient building that is said to have
been a townhouse of Sir Richard's. After leaving Ruthin we headed for
Chester, England where Sir Richard sang in a choir.
Day 6: The next morning a few in our group were chipper enough to get up
early and go see Chester Cathedral, where Sir Richard Clough sang in the
choir, while the rest of us slept in. After they returned from the Cathedral
and the rest of us finished our breakfast we boarded our bus and headed to
Oxford and Oxford University.
Upon arriving at Oxford University, the oldest institution of higher learning
in England, we met with our guide, Christine. She led us around parts of the
university to see some of the different colleges contained within it as well
as introducing us to the Christ Church archivist. Christine also read us
some of Arthur Hugh Clough's words since he had attended one of the colleges
there.
After our tour we met Dr. Bryan Sykes, Professor of Genetics at Oxford
University and founder of Oxford Ancestors, the company that did our DNA
tests. While we were treated to tea and sandwiches Dr. Sykes spoke to us
about how the DNA tests work and then gave us our test results (please see
article entitled 'We ARE Related to Richard Clough' in this bulletin). We
who descend from John Clough of Salisbury, MA ARE related to the Richard
Clough of Denbigh, Wales and his descendants!! That was certainly the
highlight of our trip! I spoke at length with Dr. Sykes afterwards and he
gave me several additional DNA test kits to bring home for anyone else who
would like to have their DNA compared with ours.
That evening was very sad for me since it was the last time we would be
together as a group doing a group planned activity. So, I spoke to the group
on the bus on our way back to London and thanked them for being such a
wonderful group. I also expressed my sadness that our trip and our time
together was nearing its end and that it was I that was honored to have been
able to lead them on this trip.
Day 7: The last full day of our trip we did not have any group activities
planned. Luanne and Susan Green went to some museums, Ward (Edward) Jones
headed to a meeting, and the rest of us took a ferry down the Thames River to
Greenwich to see where Greenwich Meantime starts and ends. After returning
from Greenwich Rebecca left us to head home about an hours train ride north
of London. Needless to say, we were all sad to see her leave. That evening
some of us did our last bit of 'pub grub' and tried not to get too teary eyed
when it came time to say good-bye.
The next day was the day most of us left the UK. Waldo and LaRayne Call
headed back to Arizona before driving back to their home in Mexico.
Priscilla Kaeser headed back to Maryland. Linda Freehling flew back to
Detroit, her pit stop before getting home to the other side of MI. And seven
of us flew back to Boston. In the meantime, Ward and Billie Jones, as well
as Luanne and Susan Green, headed off on their extended stays in the UK.
This trip was extraordinary in many ways! The people we met, the places we
visited, and the news of our collective ancestry was all made better by the
group with which we shared them. It is my desire to continue Clough/Cluff
Family Trips in order to continue showing family members our collective
history in the UK while being in the midst of family from all over the world.
For those of us that have a love of our history, there is nothing like being
in the midst of close and distant cousins while being in the middle of our
shared history.
We ARE Related to Richard Clough!!
Written by Sheila Andersen, JCGS Genealogist
Richard Clough the Hen (meaning Sr.) was a Glover by trade and lived in
Denbigh, Wales. He lived during the reigns of Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward
VI, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth. He was married during the reign of
Henry VIII and resided on his estate at Llewene Green in Denbigh where his
five sons and daughter were born. Richard Clough's sons were merchants and
his fifth son, Richard, received the title Sir Richard, a Knight of the Holy
Sepulcher, an honor conferred upon him after his pilgrimage to the Holy Land
on Crusade. After his return from Crusade he became an agent to Sir Thomas
Gresham, a wealthy merchant in London, special financial representative of
Queen Elizabeth, and builder of the first Royal Exchange in London.
Sir Richard Clough accumulated a considerable fortune and on his paternal
estate in Denbigh he erected his mansion, Plas Clough, which is currently
occupied by Mrs. Ann Davies, a direct descendant. Another home he built in
Denbigh, Bach-y Graig, was the first brick home built in Wales.
The idea that the descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, MA could possibly
be related to this Welsh family has been kicked around for over 50 years. In
the first volume of 'Genealogy of Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury,
Mass.' it states: "This general history of the family in England and Wales
furnishes a foundation for the opinions that well informed genealogists have
expressed and for certain deductions from the biography of John Clough: -that
the most promising region for exploration for the roots of our family tree is
in northwestern England and in Wales. Perchance a baptismal record may lift
the veil of mystery, or an inscription on a tombstone in a quiet church yard
may prove to be the missing clue. Such a possibility is an incentive for
future research that may justify the name of the John Clough Genealogical
Society."
Much effort has been put forth to find the ancestry of our John Clough of
Salisbury, MA as well as the possible connection between his descendants and
the Richard Clough family of Denbigh, Wales both by those that came before us
and present family members. But, to no avail. However, the recent
availability of DNA testing seemed like a viable option to help us find out
scientifically what we have been unable to prove/disprove with other forms of
research.
Rebecca Harpole, who presently lives in England, got the ball rolling for us
by contacting Oxford Ancestors at Oxford University. They offer Y-line DNA
testing. The Y chromosome is only passed from father to son so we could only
have direct male line Clough descendants tested. Our 'Society's' Treasurer,
John R. Clough, agreed to be the Y-line donor for the descendants of John
Clough of Salisbury, MA but we also needed a direct male line descendant of
Richard Clough Sr. of Denbigh, Wales to have a comparison of the results.
Sir Richard Clough's male line died out generations ago. However, Angela
Perkins from Devon, England contacted a cousin of hers, Richard Butler
Clough. He is a direct male line descendant of Richard Clough Sr., lives in
Kent, England, and was agreeable to testing for us.
When Rebecca gathered all of the tests together, including one from her
brother, she sent them off to Oxford Ancestors. After they received our
tests it was decided Dr. Bryan Sykes, Professor of Genetics at Oxford
University and founder of Oxford Ancestors, would be the one to give us our
DNA test results when our small group visited Oxford in October. Needless to
say, we were extremely pleased and honored that he would take time out of his
busy schedule to speak to us!
Although the first 'Clough/Cluff Family Trip' had to be postponed by three
weeks due to the tragedy that befell our nation on Sept. 11 we still had
sixteen in attendance. Our little group toured parts of Oxford University,
old stomping ground of Arthur Hugh Clough and other family members, and then
met Dr. Bryan Sykes and his 10-year-old son.
We sat on pins and needles while he explained how the Y-line DNA testing
works. We then became quite anxious when it came time for him to tell us the
results of our tests. He stated that the Y-line DNA of John R. Clough and
Richard Butler Clough are exactly the same! Interpretation: those that
descend from John Clough of Salisbury, MA ARE related to those that descend
from Richard Clough, Sr. of Denbigh, Wales!!
You can imagine the elation we all felt being at Oxford University and
hearing that extraordinary news! We finally had a form of proof of our
collective ancestry!
But the news for Rebecca was not the same. Her brothers DNA did not
correspond with ours showing that her Clough ancestry is different from ours.
This news seemed unfair, unjust. After all, Rebecca has done considerable
research on our behalf. It was Rebecca who found the baptismal record for a
John Clough in London and it was Rebecca who initiated having the DNA testing
done. Our feelings became a mix of elation for us who know our ancestry and
deep sadness for Rebecca.
Even though we now know that we ARE related to the Richard Clough family of
Denbigh, Wales we still do not know how. As reported in earlier articles, we
have circumstantial evidence that leads us to believe we may come from one of
Sir Richard's brothers but it is only circumstantial.
After Dr. Sykes gave us our test results I was thrilled to be able to speak
to him at length about what the results mean to us as a group of Clough
descendants and about how genetic testing will change the face of genealogy.
As I thanked him very much for taking the time to speak to us he allowed me
to take extra DNA tests back home with me. So, for anyone that still cannot
seem to connect their Clough ancestry back to John Clough of Salisbury, MA
and wishes to have a DNA test sent to them, please contact me. The results
of these extra tests will be compared with the results were we given at
Oxford. However, please remember, only direct male line Clough descendants
may be tested since the tests are based on the Y chromosome.
Despite the finding that Rebecca is not closely related to us she is still
willing to continue doing research for us since she resides in England. I
encourage all of you to express your appreciation to her - it is thanks to
many of her efforts that we now know a portion of our collective ancestry.
Dear Clough Cousins,
As many of you know, the 'John Clough Genealogical Society' had some DNA
testing done and it was proved that those that descend from John Clough of
Salisbury, MA, are also related to the Richard Clough family (1500s) of
Denbigh, Wales. After sending this e-mail to the list I will post my two
most recent articles that where in the latest 'Clough Society' bulletin to
the list in their original format since they deal with this very topic.
Oxford Ancestors is the company that did the DNA tests for us. Dr. Bryan
Sykes, a geneticist at Oxford University and world renowned author and
speaker, created the company. I spent this past weekend with Dr. Sykes and
his Chief of Operations Officer, Dr. David Ashworth, at the GenTech
convention in Boston. They hired me as the Chief of Operations Officer for
Oxford Ancestors US Bureau! This is quite exciting for me!
I will be responsible for building the US bureau and then running it. At
some point I will also be going out and giving presentations about what
Oxford Ancestors and the DNA testing can do and giving examples, such as our
Clough DNA results. At some point I may start traveling around the states to
give presentations to genealogical and historical societies, as well as any
other groups that would be interested in DNA testing.
All of this will work very well hand in hand with another employment
opportunity I may soon have working as an independent travel agent in order
to promote my ideas of creating trips to the UK based on genealogy/ancestry.
The options for these trips are limitless and it will be a great way for
people to see the places where their ancestors lived. This was the basis for
the first 'Clough Family Trip to the UK' that I planned last year. Although
I will not be able to take most of the groups, I will help people create
their trips and make them work.
Even though the individuals who went on the first 'Clough Family Trip to the
UK' all had Clough ancestry, that is not the only surname they can base
subsequent trips on. For example, I also have Magoon ancestry. I could
create a trip to Scotland and invite other Magoon descendants to see where
our Magoon ancestors came from and see places that still carry the name, etc.
What is also very exciting about these trips is being able to create the
groups that will take them. It is a great way for people of like ancestry to
meet in the place of their ancestors origin! Often times the people in these
groups would never otherwise meet.
Please pass the word along about these trips! There is nothing like standing
on the soil of your ancestors!
All of this is quite exciting for me and I wanted to share it with the list!
:-) If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.
Kindest Regards,

Hello Liz,
I do have some info on Meribah. Her father was John Ring and his parents
were Robert Ring and Elizabeth _______ (Hoyt pg. 297 and 298). Her mother
was Priscilla Norton (Hoyt pg. 266 - 267) whos parents were Joseph Norton
(Hoyt pg. 266 - 267) and Susan Getchell (Hoyt pg. 173). Susan's father was
Samuel Getchell (Hoyt pg. 173).
I hope this helps?
Cousin George
Dear Emmett,
Where do we go with the DNA information? Well, we could start a Clough
surname study. We would then seek out other Clough's and ask them to test.
However, since we would be asking then we would have to pay for the tests.
Other than that, the DNA results gives us the direction in which to continue
our search for records. If we did the Clough surname study that would most
likely assist us in narrowing things down as well.
Any and all thoughts on the subject are welcome! :-)

Jackie, something is going on with AOL and Rootsweb. We are not getting all
the posts. I did not get the post calling for a Roll Call. Now my emails I
saved from yesterday are gone too so it is an AOL problem I do think and not
just with Rootsweb.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth Walker. I live quite near Seattle, Washington. I'm a
member of John Clough Genealogical Society. I descend through John & Jane,
then their son Thomas. My g-g-grandmother, Caroline Allura Clough, married
Orin T. Taylor. They lived in Wisconsin and are buried there.
I belong to DAR, Colonial Dames XVII and Daughters of 1812 through my
Cloughs.
I have a second Clough line through John & Jane's first daughter, Elizabeth.
It's snowing!
Liz

odd reason I didnt get the email I orignally sent out to the list! But I did
get this one. I also wanted to see how many people we had on the list.
Have a great day! jackie

Hello Everyone
I thought it would be nice to have a roll call to see who the members of this
list are.
For those of you that dont know me, my name is Jackie Gilligan and I am the
editor of the John Clough Society quarterly bulletin.
And for those members that belong to the society this is a reminder that any
articles you may have the deadline for the next bulletin is March 1st.
I have a column in the bulletin that has to do with "most Wanted" and I will
put queries in the bulletin ifyou submit them to me - regardless of if your a
member of the Society or not.
So Welcome to All! Have a great Day! jackie

Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that I now have 53 firm OK's to add people to my wall map. I know that I have talked about it before but thought I would send it to the new list just in case someone didn't get it.
All I need is the name of the nearest city to you and the state you live in so that I can add you to my map.
If you have any question about this, please feel free to contact me at:
