It looks like Jesse might have been the son Nathaniel and Mary Stien. Nathaniel was married to Ann Smith first [ Married 1748]. Jesse's, birth is about right. Nathaniel and Mary had had a son Nathaniel Jr. in 1791. My great gr.William [1805] went to Ohio and Ind about the same time.

I have been trying for years to find anything on Jesse's parents, brothers, sisters, ect. His middle name "Whitmer", I thought would give me some hint. I've had most of the data on him since 1981. Any cousins out there???

My two cents worth: I see 4 sets of dna prints, one to Robert/Joseph and
three to Jeremiah. We can't all be from Jeremiah. I know we are probably to
tired and out of time to search? But I do know we are all probably
R1b1a2a1a4. It is ancient and rare. The dna people have no idea, where,
when, or how, it originated but they know that 80% of R1b is from the U.K.

I am also searching for any info on this Cloud family because Henrietta was
my grandmother, she married Cornelius Malone and together they had two
daughters, their daughter "Suellen" was my mother. I do have some old photos
that grandma Henrietta saved but there is no info on them except on the back
of one picture in her own handwriting it states "I think this is my father".
I do know that Henry Harrison Cloud is buried in the Dayton National
Cemetery but I to am still searching for earlier information about him.
Henrietta met my grandfather Cornelius at the Xenia Soldiers Home so I want
to know the story about why they grew up in the orphanage and also why
everything was so secretive so maybe we could compare the info that we have
& find a connection somewhere.

I thought the Cloud relative was a Doctor and now I find out that he was a lawyer. So, was he a doctor or a lawyer. I heard in the letter that he said something about Quincy, Illinois which is not far from Urbana, Illinois. Did he live there for any time at all.

Tom, I bet that Peter Bailey is related to Elizabeth Bailey's family. That makes two at the Alamo, by relation. It is so historical, it seems unreal but it is not. Cloud and Bailey cousins.

Daniel William Cloud, who died defending the Alamo, wrote a letter to his family three months prior to that event which shaped the future of Texas and the United States.
The letter was obtained by the Cloud Family Association and they presented it to the Alamo.
One of our cousins, Barbara Richardson, persuaded Cowboy Poet of Texas Mr. Red Steagall to record the letter for us and each attendee received a CD with the recording on it.
Barbara also obtained permission from Red for the recording to be posted on the Cloud Family Association site, so I converted it to MP3 and have created a page for it:

I'd appreciate any suggestion on how to make the page more readable or any corrections you might find.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

While I have ostensibly the same info as you provide below, I wonder if
this came from some document, is a compilation in your words from other
documentation. My Cloud line is one of the 2 that seem to be in doubt in
the DNA documents by Tom Cloud.
I am mildly upset by this finding, but I guess that the DNA is what it is.
I assume you have access to my data at www/cloudgenweb.com and I just dont
have the energy to go back to digging in my ancestor line.

Folks,
... and Robin Rhinehart, with whom I discussed this several months ago,
I have added some information to the DNA-only results page, hoping to make interpreting it simpler:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cdna_unsorted.php
-- specifically I was trying to tell someone about the DNA data for Joseph CLOUD b. 1710 PA) and realized the data implies he is descended from the son Robert, and that would be a misinterpretation of the data. The data "implies" that, but it does not prove it, as three of William's five sons are not represented in our project. It is very possible Joseph is descended from William as the family researchers believe, or one of the other two missing sons.
The easiest way to see the markers which define the lines, click on one of the R1b modal values (below is the ancient R1b modal):
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cdna_unsorted.php?srow=0
It's easy to forget there are three lines of William for which we have no data -- his sons William, Joseph and John. Some of the matches could actually belong to a branch of one of the missing sons.
We really need representation in the project from each of the missing sons!
It would be great if you would see if you can locate living, direct paternal male descendants of these lines and get them involved in our family discussions and ultimately to join the DNA Project -- even if these are not your lines. I really need your help with this.
I'd also welcome any different perspectives on interpreting the data -- or better ways to explain it.
sincerely,
Tom Cloud
Ransom Pinkney (Pinckney) Cloud was the Illegitimate son of Joel Cloud (abt 1793-1855) and Nancy Denton. Joel was the son of Isaac and Sally (Lankford) Cloud. There is no record, so far as I know, that either of those parents had any Indian blood. It may be that his mother, Nancy Denton , was of full or partial Indian descent, but I have never seen any verification of that.
Joel Cloud was appointed Rutherford Co.(NC) Comptroller in Jan., 1818. As a justice, he helped form the new Polk Co, NC, government (the county was carved out of Rutherford) in 1847.
1855 (Sept) - Will of Joel Cloud (wife Nancy, grandson Ransom Cloud Tallent) probated (will filed 9 Aug., 1847). Executor: Ransom Cloud. County of Polk, State of N.C.
The following is former CFA historian Jan Cloud's transcript of of a letter written by Joel Cloud, a copy of which was acquired by the Cloud Famly Association in fall 2003:
To the Honorable General Assembly of N. Carolina,
whereas: the memorial of Joel Cloud of Rutherford County begs leave to inform your honorable body that I have two children by the names of Polly Miria & Ransom_being born out of wedlock, he your humble petitioner requests your legitimating said children as legal heirs in sxxc of my estate and in every other respect as tho said children had been born in a legitimate state & alter their names from Denton to Cloud if the above petition meet the approbation of your honorable body your petitioner as in duty bound will forever pray. Given under my hand the 21st of Oct. 1818. Joel Cloud
Judging by the will, Joel had at some point prior to probate married the mother of his two children.

The data for the comparison of William Cloud of SC and the Null-425 project was incorrect for DYS-385. I kept wondering why the William Cloud group was so much different from all the others.
The problem occurs because FamilyTreeDNA now puts the multiple-copy markers in one column and separates them by a hyphen. So a value of 11 and 14 for DYS-385 a and b is represented as 11-14. Excel reads that as the date "14 Nov" and there is no way to convince it that it's not a date. (This occurs specifically when reading the data from an html file -- for certain import scenarios it is possible to tell Excel to interpret the data as text and not a numeral or a date.)
I believe I've corrected the problem ... I hope!

If you notice any mistrakes (sic) please let me know -- note that I only used the R1b data from the Null 425 project.
The Null 425 results from FTDNA can be seen here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/null425/default.aspx?section=ycolorized
The problem occurred with DYS385 -- notice the hyphen for it and all the other multi-copy markers (they used to have separate columns for each marker).

I apologize if you get more than one of these -- that's because I have several lists of people interested in the Cloud DNA Project.
This is not the presentation I made in San Antonio on July 16 but a different approach to the project's analysis.
The presentation in San Antonio had three primary objectives, though I don't know if I achieved them:
1 - Explain triangulation and how it can be used to validate a pedigree.
2 - Show that the calculated modal value for William Cloude the immigrant appears to be correct even though only 2 out of his 5 sons (who had families) were represented.
3 - Show to the family of William Cloud b. 178x South Carolina that they had a unique and valuable marker in their data -- the Null at DYS-425 and to encourage them to (a) expand at least one other test to 67 markers to prove the marker belongs to the whole group and (b) to have one or all join the Null-425 Project.
A secondary goal was to get a few of our researchers to check the accuracy of their pedigree information based on what appears (to me) to be irregularities in the DNA data.
To further address the last topic, I have created different presentations of the DNA data in order that we might better use it in our research.
The actual presentation I gave in San Antonio is at:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/2011/
** this might not look good in browsers other than FireFox (I didn't intend it for public consumption, sorry).
** The menu / navigation is at the bottom of each page.
I used one of the many PowerPoint presentations I prepared and discarded as an introduction to the presentation. It is incomplete, but might be of interest -- it has DNA definitions in it.
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/2011/report.pps
I have slightly modified the DNA results page:
- The Y-STR marker names across the top of the data are now rotated text. Before they were separate letters in a column. Example, the first marker was originally on the page in this format:
3
9
3
That cannot be found by a search on the page. For some reason, the marker names are not in alpha-numeric order, which makes locating the marker a challenge. I changed the name to be:
DYS-393 .... which can be found with a search on the page.
I also added links at the bottom to three results pages. They are pages I created to allow different ways of looking at the data:
1 - The original page -- which is ordered by the pedigrees submitted to me.
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cdnareport.php
2 - A page ordered according to how I read the DNA marker values.
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cdna_unsorted.php
** This page omits all the DYS-464 markers as there is no way of knowing the order of the markers -- they are ordered from the smallest number of repeats to the largest. This makes using them as a comparison difficult at best -- typically reserved for distinguishing between recent branches in family lines.
** The ordering of the kits is based on markers (I selected) which occur more than once, for the most part.
** The order of the kits within a group could be different than shown as the DNA data may not differentiate between close family lines. The ordering of the kits was done without referring to the pedigree information and may not show how the people in a branch are related to each other.
3 - A page comparing the data of our Cloud family descended from William Cloud born about 1780 in South Carolina and (a subset of) the data submitted to the Null-425 Project.
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/wmCloud-425null_report.php
4 - I also included a link for the R1b Histograms from the R1b Project.
http://www.kerchner.com/r1bproject/histograms/
The histograms are useful in seeing if our data possesses unique markers -- markers which are not possessed by the millions of other people in the R1b haplogroup.
The people in the William Cloude the immigrant group belong to the U-106 SNP group:
http://www.kerchner.com/r1bproject/histograms/index4.htm
(I believe the people in the William Cloud 178x of SC also are in this group.)
* I suggest opening more than one window in your browser to help in looking at this.
- in one, open the unsorted DNA results page, highlighting the modal value for R1b or for R1b-L48 .
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cdna_unsorted.php?srow=0
- Open the histogram page in another window
Examples of unique markers:
- Twiggs county Jeremiah Cloud, as well as a branch of William Cloude the immigrant, has a modal value at DYS-391 of 10, which accounts for 32% of the tests in the R1b project:
http://www.kerchner.com/r1bproject/histograms/pages/000D391.htm
- Some of the people in the project have a value of 14 for DYS-389-1, which is pretty unique:
http://www.kerchner.com/r1bproject/histograms/pages/000D3891.htm
** (Note that DYS389 1 & 2 are different from other markers and so the histogram for the 2nd value is not useful as presented as it is changed by the 1st value.)
- ** The value of 26 at DYS-447 is a distinctive marker for William Cloude the immigrant's line.
http://www.kerchner.com/r1bproject/histograms/pages/000D447.htm
... as is the value of 31 at DYS-449
http://www.kerchner.com/r1bproject/histograms/pages/000D449.htm
Not many in our project have tested to 67 markers, but, of those that did, we can see some other markers which are unique to the descendants of William Cloude the immigrant:
DYS-395-S1b = 17 is a very rare marker (1.7% of the R1b project).
DYS-481 = 24 -- 4.9% of the R1b project.
To end this very long email -- I suggest looking at the DNA results page made without using the pedigrees and:
- find the kit number to which you are related and see if the DNA supports your pedigree information -- i.e. does your pedigree information indicate you belong within the group shown on that page.
- Remember that the DNA data may not be able to distinguish sub-branches within the groups.
Let me know if you have any questions.
sincerely,
Tom Cloud
