UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOS. C. CLOUD, OF MAY'S LANDING, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 6,100, dated February 6, 1849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. CLOUD, of May's Landing, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Plows ; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My first improvement consists in adding at the back end of the mold-board what I have denominated an "auxiliary farrow-side," which may be cast separately from, and permanently attached to, the ordinary mold-board.
Plows, as usually constructed, rest on the heel of the landside and on the sharp edge of the share, and in consequence of this the least variation of the handles of the plow causes the share to cut up or down, according as the bandies are accidentally inclined ; but the auxiliary furrow-side presents a broad bearing on the ground, and is so formed that the bearing is both on the heel of the landside and on the heel of the furrow-side, by which means the cutting of the share is readily regulated by the plowman. The auxiliary furrow-side concurs with the mold-board in thoroughly laying over the entire furrow-slice, its outward inclination concurring with the mold-board in producing this effect, and its face being on the line of draft. The cutter is also formed. and attached in a new, firm, and advantageous manner, and is so combined with the point and share, by means of a wrought-iron plate, which has a tenon adapted to a mortise in said cutter, that these parts are thereby mo!
re effectively secured in place than by any of the plans heretofore adopted.
In plows of all kinds the wear that takes place on the under side, in the vicinity of the point, is very great, but this I obviate, in great measure, by the extending of that part of my cutter that constitutes a portion of the landside down to the bottom of the plow, where it forms a bearing on the ground, and it is thereby made to receive the larger part of the friction that takes place there, and, being renewable with the cutter, increases the durability of the plow.

Message Board Post:
The Isaac Cloud who lived in colonial Southside Virginia (Brunswick>Lunenburg>Halifax) -- whose estimated birth year in Chester Co., PA, is 1707, was shown by court documents and land records to have had two daughters and a son. The son, Isaac Jr., is identified by land records. The older daughter, Elizabeth Cloud Layne, is identified in a Pittsylvania Co., VA court record of July 1770 as follows: "Richard Thrasher came into court and first being sworn said that Elizabeth Cloud Layne is the oldest daughter of Isaac Cloud and the said Isaac Cloud was the oldest son of Joseph Cloud, that the said Isaac has no male heirs living and the said Clouds were of the province of Pennsylvania in county of Chester which is ordered to be certified."
In 1771, the year following the filing of Elizabeth Cloud Layne's affidavit, she and her husband, still of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, again went to court and provided Power of Attorney to Gidion Marr and appointed him "to go to Pencylvania and act as their attorney both at law in fact...recover all Estate Real and Personal that may lawfully descend to said Elizabeth Lane one of the Daughters Coheirs of Isaac Cloud dece'd in the Province of Pencylvania...Impower him to Commence and prosecute Suits against any Person as Shall or may hold out or withhold any such Estate from him...full Power to Sell and dispose of all or any part of such Estate for such prices as he shall think fitt to Convey said Estate to Purchaser by Lawfull Conveyance."
The 1770 affidavit refers to Elizabeth Layne as "the oldest daughter" of Isaac Cloud. And dispelling all doubt about the matter, the 1771 delegation of power of attorney -- with its reference to "daughters co-heirs" -- makes it absolutely clear that Elizabeth Cloud Layne had at least one sister. We know that there was in fact another Cloud woman in Pittsylvania County at that time, of approximately the right age. Her name was Ruth Cloud, and her marriage to John Thrasher took place about 1768, according to Thrasher family records. Note that the 1770 affidavit on behalf of Elizabeth Layne was presented by Richard Thrasher, undoubtedly father-in-law or brother-in-law to Ruth Cloud Thrasher. Also, Thrasher family genealogy shows that two of Ruth and John Thrasher's sons were named Isaac Cloud Thrasher and Joseph Cloud Thrasher. [(Pruett, Dorothy Sturgis. Our Thrasher Heritage. Gives 1734 as Ruth Cloud's birth date in Pittsylvania Co., VA) (Note that Pittsylvani!
a County was not created until 1767; if the date and State are correct, the county would probably have been Brunswick - if earlier, Prince George.)]
For a full account of the records pertaining to Isaac Cloud, and my interpretation of them, see "THE MYSTERY OF ISAAC CLOUD, COLONIAL VIRGINIA"; Cloud Family Journal, Vol. XXII, No. 4, p. 85 ff.

Betty,
The email was about joining the email forum -- very much the same thing as this Cloud surname forum at rootsweb you sent your email to. It doesn't cost anything to join.
WRT the DNA Project -- it is a Y-chromosome study. That means only men can participate as women don't have a Y chromosome. It traces the paternal (male) line only and that is what it is called a "surname study" and, in our case, studies the CLOUD surname.
If you have further questions either write me an email directly or join the project DNA forum and post your question there (rootsweb is sometimes intolerant of DNA discussions).

I am trying to get my sister who lives in Oklahoma to join. I will pay her fee to join since she is on a limited income, but I first have to ask her about it. She doesn't have a computer and doesn't know how to use one if she did have one. So, I will keep her up to date on any information that I receive.
