Looking for the Parents of Sqiure Cloud shown on the 1850 Shelby County Census as being born abt 1806 in North Carolina. The 1810 and 1820 North Carolina show too many Cloud Families with sons the right ages to narrow it down. His wife Margaret was born in Georgia abt 1804 and his daughter Tabitha or Fadora was born in Georgia abt 1837. The daughter married my McDonald/McDaniel.
Hello Clouds,
My brother has neurofibromatosis...we also know of a 2nd cousin who has this. We now know of another cousin who may have this.
Are there other Clouds with this genetic disease? it seems rare, however, within our Cloud family we are seeing a few instances of it.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.
John Cloud
There is a marriage record for Nora CLOUD to Harry B. JOHNSON on Dec. 16, 1895 in Jerome, Jerome county, Idaho (recorded in Arizona territory).
Any ideas what family she belongs to?
thanks,
Tom

Taken from the Flake's Bulletin, Texas, 2 July 1867
Died in Hempstead, Austin County, Texas, May 16th, 1867, Jerry Cloud, aged 36 years.
Mr. Cloud was born and raised in Austin and Washington Counties, served through the late war. in which he contracted the disease that cut short his life in its prime. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his early demise. He was a man of good impulse and was of reticent dispositions, which hid from many the finer qualities of his heart. His widow is the eldest step-daughter of our fellow-citizen, Mr. J. W. Bradford.

Laurie,
I've worked on this a little -- but you didn't give very much information.
When was Bertha Cloud Wagner born, and where? When and where did she die? What about Charles Wagner, her husband -- when was he born and when and where did he die?
I found a Charles Cloud born circa 1912 that I think may be your grandfather. Did he have a sister named Rebecca Wagner who was older than he was?
This family -- Charles & Bertha, with children Rebecca and Charles are in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.
I believe I have at least found this Bertha's mother -- based on the street they lived on in 1900 and in 1910, see below.
I found two Bertha Clouds on the 1900 census from PA:
1900 census, PA, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, ed 1022, 7-A, June 6
Saybrooke Ave, HH 120/125, all b. PA
Cloud, Mary A, head, W, F, Feb 1861, 39, widowed, 8/3 children
Cloud, Bertha M, dau, June 1889, 11
Cloud, Annie A, dau, Dec 1895, 4
1900 census, PA, Delaware, Chester, ed 151, 8-A, June 5
HH 130/144, all b. PA
Layman, Howard, head, W, M, Dec 1877, 22, m 0 yrs
Layman, Bertha, wife, W, F, Apr 1882, 18, m 0 yrs
Cloud, Bertha, niece, W, F, Oct 1889, 10
Then, in 1910, I found Charles and Bertha Wagner living on Saybrooke Ave. It's not the same address, but it's the same street, so it is not proof and may just be a coincidence.
1910 census, PA, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, ed 1018, 3-A, April 16
--
-- 1043 Saybrooke, HH 43/46, all b. PA
Wagner, Charles S, head, M, W, 23, m1 2 yrs, soap worker
Wagner, Bertha, wife, F, W, 21, m1 2 yrs, 1/1 child
Wagner, Rebecca, dau, 1-6/12
--
-- 1039 Saybrooke Ave, HH 45/48
Wagner, Charles A, head, M, W, 56, m1 8 yrs, PA, PA, Germany, broom maker
Wagner, Kathryn, wife, F, W, 58, m2 8 yrs, 3/3 children, Germany, Ger, Ger
Friedel, Clara F, step-dau, F, W, 27, single, PA, Ger, Ger, asst mgr, dept store
In 1920, Charles is living with what may be his parents:
1920 census, PA, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, ed 1488, 9-B, March 17
HH 37/44, all b. PA
Wagner, John, head, M, W, 62, chauffeur
Wagner, Henrietta, wife, F, W, 58
Wagner, John, son, 26
Wagner, Charles, head, 34
Wagner, Bertha, wife, 30
Wagner, Rebecca, dau, 11
Wagner, Charles, son, 8
Does any of this look like your family? Can you add anything -- like the street they lived on or the cities they lived in and the dates?
Tom Cloud

This is not a CLOUD post -- it is a post by a Cloud (me) with information I think might be of interest to many on this list.
I recently posted about two DNA companies offering specials -- 23andme.com and familytreedna.com. I took those tests though I felt I didn't have time to study the results as all my time is spent on the Cloud line right now.
Then I got an email from a man who said we matched on the Family Finder results -- and we do.
Turns out he and I are the same mtDNA haplogroup -- IOW we share the same maternal line -- and a common surname: SAPP. One of his ancestresses is Eliza SAPP. My maternal line 3rd g-grandmother is Mary SAPP who has been a brick wall for researchers of Henry CRAVEY (her husband).
There are two problems associated with the use of mtDNA for genealogical research:
1 - mtDNA changes very slowly, unlike Y-DNA, so every female descended from the ancient matriarch will have almost identical mtDNA signatures;
2 - the surname for each woman in the line typically changes for every generation, making it more difficult to trace the lineage.
But -- when one has the same mtDNA signature as someone else and the surnames match at the same time and place, that presents a very high probability that both lines share the same ancestress.
Bottom line -- I have found a very promising clue in my search for my maternal ancestor through the use of the Family Finder test at FTDNA.
Hope this helps someone else.

The Cloud Family Association's historian and journal editor, Jan Cloud, traveled to England in 1990 to visit the Wiltshire area, where the Cloud Family came from in England before moving to America. while in England she did some research on Cloud as a surname, Following are her comments.
"Numerous books are available outlining the origins of various surnames. They differ markedly, however, in scholarship and some seem to derive more from fantasy than fact. With the plethora of books on the subject, it's hard to know whom to believe. Therefore, when in Canterbury, England the summer, I asked the Librarian of Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies who the considered to be the most authoritative source for English surnames. Her recommendation tilted to Reaney, quoted below.
A dictionary of British surnames by P.H. Reany, Rutledge & Kegan Paul Pubi., 1958
Cloude: Wimarc' de la Clude 1199 P (somerset); Robert atte Cloude 1327
SRSo. 'Dweller by the rock or hill' (OE dud 'mass of rock, hill'), as at
Temple Cloud (Somerset), Cloud Bridge (Warwicks), Clouds Wood (Herts).
A Dictionary of Surnames by Patrick Hanks & Flavia Hodges, Oxford Press, 1988
Cloud 1. English topographic name for someone who lived near an outcrop or hill,
from OE (old English) rock (only later used of the formations in the sky).
2. French: from the Gmc personal name Hiodald, composed of the elements hiod fame +
wald rule, which was borne by a saint and bishop of the 6th cent.
Vars. (of 1): Cloude. (of 2): Cloue(x) (see also Close).
Dims. (of 2): Clouet; Closon (BElgium).
The above origins are interesting in light of miscellaneous Cloud records collected by our
late CFA member, ROy Cloud of California. Roy found John, William, and Robert Clouds
on the Devonshire Muster Rolls in the early 1500's listed as ;Archers with long Bowes.'
Correspondence with Roy's wife, Jean, in 1988 indicated that he also located a Robert de
la Cloude and William de la Cloude on the Lay Subsidy Roll 1332, a tax of Edward lll for
Warwickshire. This would have been a 'lucky find' because, according to Markwell & Saul
in The Family Historian's Enquire Within (3rd ed. 1988), names were not generally known
to be given in the 14th and 15th century rolls."

Friends,
My branch of the Cloud family is currently in a state of shock over the
death of William Edward "Bill" Cloud. A vigorous and seemingly healthy
58-year-old, Bill fell dead of an apparent heart attack in his condo in
Dubai shortly after completing a workout in a nearby fitness center.
Bill was there completing his second year of a five-year contract with
his Texas based employer. He had lived in Houston for many years.
Bill was the youngest of the three sons of Burt M. Cloud Sr. and a
gr-gr-gr-grandson of Jerrimiah Cloud who was born in Twiggs County, GA,
in 1784. He is survived by a wonderful wife, Carole, and three great
kids: Travis, a recent U/Texas grad now working in Austin; Austin, a
junior at Ole Miss; and Christy, a sophomore at Ole Miss.
Bill was a great guy who will be really missed.

Please everyone keep in mind that there is no way you can get anything from a rootsweb email list that can damage your computer.
All rootsweb email lists/forums:
1 - prohibit attachments and
2 - are plain text only.
That means there is only one way you can get something damaging to your computer from a rootsweb email -- by clicking on a link to an infected web site.
IOW -- do NOT click on a link in any email message unless you trust the sender and/or know the site you're going to visit. This applies to any email and to any link on any web site.
Also, the list is member-only. That also protects us from spam and viruses.
And last -- remember that any of us could have our computers get infected and start sending out email we were unaware of, so please be patient with another member this has happened to. That sort of problem has to be dealt with at their computer and there's not much we can do other than remove them from the list.
One way to avoid having your computer hijacked and email sent out to your address book without your knowledge is to NOT use Microsoft Outlook for your email client. I use Eudora (now obsolete) but Thunderbird is free and works fine, without the macro capabilities that make Outlook vulnerable. (Outlook and other Microsoft programs are vulnerable because they have the most powerful feature set and are (arguably) the best, so I don't blame anyone for using Outlook -- just be aware that you need to keep macros turned off and keep it up to date.)
If you do use Outlook, keep it updated. Also use a good antivirus (AV) program and keep it updated.
