Hello Cloud family genealogists,
My name is Ali Richardson, great great granddaughter of Sarah Sallie Cloud and granddaughter of Barbara Richardson. We are from the mysterious Jeremiah line. I am in college and have recently discovered how important it is to know the origins and history of your family.
I attended the family gathering in Charleston this summer and realized that I was the youngest one there. It is my mission to get my generation involved, because so many of you are a wealth of information and sooner or later, we are going to want to tell our children about their family ancestry.
In order to help me reach out to this younger generation, I am working with Cecil and Tom to utilize Facebook in hope of getting our generation interested in their heritage. If you have not yet become a fan of the Cloud genealogy page on Facebook, please go to http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Cloud-Genealogy/175505624763?re... and recommend it to your children and grandchildren.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ali Richardson (a Cloud descendent)

Susan,
I have to rethink what I wrote. I found the gravestones for Adam and his wife Mary and also the stone for Artie. (BTW, they are buried as SNIDER.)
Adam and Mary:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=snider&GSbyrel=in&G...
The Mary buried with him doesn't appear to be the same Mary who is the mother of his (older) children. She is born 1834 and would be the Mary I have marked as a daughter on the 1870 census. In 1850 Adam is with a Mary who was born about 1805 and he has no wife with him for 1860, so the first Mary must have died.
Artie is listed on her stone as the daughter of A. and M.A. SNIDER, so she is not the daughter of the Margaret who married Geo. CLOUD.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=23095441&PIpi=8515927
This makes me wonder but what the three children I have for Margaret are actually the children of Adam by his second wife, also Mary.
That would mean that Altie listed as dau-in-law on 1880 census is actually George's sister-in-law.

Susan,
Do you have anything besides the censuses for this family? Do you have family knowledge or Bible records, etc?
The information I have on MyKindred.com did not come from someone else (as much of it does) -- I researched it myself some time ago and found the censuses to be confusing at best.
Because of the discrepancies of the ages given on the censuses over the years, I could assume Margaret's birth dates were wrong and that she was Adam's daughter -- except for the reference in 1880 to Altie SNIDER being the stepdaughter of George and Margaret CLOUD.
IOW -- who is Altie SNIDER, step-daughter living with Geo. & Margaret CLOUD in Centerville, IA for 1880 census?
Assuming the reference in 1880 to Altie being a stepdaughter is more accurate than the ages on the censuses, it appears to me that the Margaret who married Geo. CLOUD was a daughter-in-law of Adam SNIDER and that her husband, Adam's son, had to have died sometime after Oct. 1869 and when the census was taken in July 1870 -- because Altie is born after July 1870 (per the 1880 census). (A wild assumption -- since it appears Adam only had two sons and Hiram is married to Mercilla -- would be that Peter had been her husband and the father of her three SNYDER/SNIDER children.)

One last item -- my observed inconsistencies in birth dates for a few of the people from Adam's family:
census, 1850, 1860, 1870
Adam, 44, 54, 55
Hiram 21, 30, 33
Peter 15, 25
Amanda 12, 24, 26
Margaret 7, 17, 22 (if I am correct, the Margaret with them on the 1870 census is not a daughter but a daughter-in-law)
In 1880, the Margaret J. married to Geo. CLOUD is 32 and in 1900 she is 47 -- her dob given as Oct 1852. The daughter of Adam would be 57 in 1900 based on 1850 and 1860 censuses.
My conclusion, based on the evidence I have, and the way I interpret it, is the Margaret who married Geo. CLOUD was a daughter-in-law of Adam SNYDER/SNIDER. She married first Peter SNYDER/SNIDER and they had three children, the last being born after Peter's death. Because Altie is his daughter and was born after the July 1870 census and was 9 years old in 1880, I make the assumption that Peter died no sooner than 9 months before July 1870, or after Oct 1869, and before the July 1870 census.
Once again -- this is my best-guess interpretation of the data I have. If you have personal knowledge otherwise, I accept that -- but how do you explain Altie SNIDER, the step-daughter, living with them in 1880?
Please tell me where I'm going wrong in my analyses of the data.
sincerely,
Tom Cloud

Susan,
It took me awhile to find him, but he is in the data at MyKindred.com:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I125507&tree=mykindr...
I don't have his parents, but he and his family are consistently listed as White on the censuses -- if he did have any Indian blood, it must not have been recent.
His dob is given as OCT 1819 on the 1900 census.
Margaret Jane's last name is unknown -- Snider/Snyder was her first husband's name.
The Cloud DNA Project could help answer some of your questions -- at least tell you if he belongs to one of the known Cloud families:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/
You would need a direct Cloud male descendant from George Cloud, to join the project.
Tom

Can you see my George Family Tree on Ancester.com if I invite you even if you are not a member? I would need your name and E-mail address to do that. And do you have a tree that I can access? I don;t want to pass up on a third cousin match, most of mine are fourth or fifth cousins.
