Harry and all,
I have registered our surname with GOONS -- the "Guild Of One Name Studies". I had to list the variants of our surname with them and I didn't want to list a surname that wasn't actually used by a Cloud male descendant.
I'm not certain of what a "variant" is, since some people have taken the surname of their wife -- common in Scottish lines where it apparently was sometimes necessary in order for the man to inherit the wife's estate.
It is important to me to cast a surname net at GOONS that encompasses the most likely occurrences of surnames of our cousins without getting too far afield.
I listed CLOUD and CLOUDE as I believe those to be the most common occurrences of the name. I'm hoping we can at some point prove whether CLOET ought to be included also.
thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom Cloud and Others:
When I was active searching my Cloud family line many years ago II found
many variant spellings of the Cloud family name; most of which you listed in
your initial message on this subject.
When we are doing genealogical research, we must keep in mind that during
the earlier years of migration to the USA from Europe especially during the
early1800's and early 1900's, many emmigrants did not know how to spell or write
their names. Consequently, Immigration clerks and census personnel recorded
names of emmigrants as they sounded to them, so many variants of common names
were recorded with many spellings. So, don't assume that records that don't
match the perfectly current spelling of family names of your ancestors don't
apply to your ancestors!
Happy ancestor hunting. Tom King, Sr. in VA.

Please tell me if you know of any true variants of the CLOUD surname -- not
errors in transcription or spelling.
I'm sure of these two:
CLOUD
CLOUDE
I'm not sure of:
CLAUD/CLAUDE
CLOYD
CLOWD
We have one instance I know of where a Cloud family took on the name
McCLOUD, but that doesn't seem to me to qualify as a true variant ... any thoughts?
Please send me any other variants you know of -- and examples of where you
found them. This includes the surnames listed above as "not sure".
thanks,

Tom,
On a 1700 list of Huguenot refugees coming into Virginia, I recall there
was at least one person with the surname Claud. This caught my eye because
three generations later, a descendant of another ship passenger, Jean Pierre
Bondurant, married an Elizabeth Cloud, born about 1769, North Carolina. So far I
have not been
able to identify Elizabeth's parents, but I wonder if she might have
descended from the Claud line.

I myself have been called clot ,clod, clown and several other spelling. Even
people say your name can't be cloud And have corrected many people. They
spell my wife's name which is Gayle as Gale clot or Gail etc. I believe it
is easy to have totally unknown relatives.. I was watching the news the
other day A young man aspiring to be to be a policeman(he being a Black) His
last name was Cloud. Where did that come from(I'm white). Even though a few
Gp's one did have slaves????
Tom -- I have seen "Clowd" in early (16th/17th cent.) Wiltshire records,
where it was pretty clearly a variant of "Cloude." Also, there are several
instances of "Claud" in Stokes Co., NC, censuses at a time when the Peter's
Creek Clouds were still there. I take that as an instance of either poor
spelling or poor penmanship. Harry

Roberta,
The problem I'm facing is that I want to cover all the genuine CLOUD bases, but I don't want to have to deal with any more additional surnames than necessary -- for example, McCloud would open me up to a huge number of people, most or all of whom are not the least bit related to any Cloud surnamed family.

FYI
I have a contact in the DNA community who runs a genealogical-oriented travel agency. They are arranging a trip to London for a DNA conference ($995) and I asked if they'd be interested in setting up a group trip for our Cloud group.
They are willing to set up a group tour for us, but advise that a six month or more lead time is required.

I send sympathy thoughts to John David Cloud in the loss of his father,
Robert Clinton Cloud. I think it is interesting that I have a Robert Clinton
(Clint) Cloud in my line - born Dec. 25, 1899 to Archibald Cloud and wife
Janie in Brazos Co. Tx. Archibald Cloud was the son of James Washington Cloud,
son of Elisha Cloud, son of William Cloud and wife Sarah of Macon Co., Ga.
James Washington Cloud was the brother of my great grandfather Cloud,
William Wilson Cloud and Sarah Jane Smith--originally of Macon Co., Ga. So far,
our line does not connect with other Cloud lines. --- Olive Ruth Nabors

Hi Tom:
I think your suggestion for adding a Memories section to The Cloud Family
Internet listing is a very good idea. The only problem I could see is limiting
the amount of space allowed for each deceased listing.
I would like to suggest that the Memories listing would be primarily devoted
to a summary of the deceased's contribution to the Association's Internet
section usage/DNA development, or published Cloud reference documents/books.

Do any of you think it would be appropriate and meaningful to add a page for past members who have died? I thought we could call it a "Memories" page rather than "In Memoriam" or such. It might also be nice to have family members and friends add remembrances about them and perhaps a picture or two. The difficulty (for me) would be coming up with the list of names.
What do you think?

Corporation Commissioners
Since Statehood
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission comprises three commissioners who are elected to six-year terms. The terms are staggered so one commissioner vacancy occurs every two years. This pattern was established by lot after election of the first three commissioners in 1907. In-term vacancies are filled by gubernatorial appointment. Appointed commissioners serve until the next regularly scheduled election.
Thirty-seven different persons have served on the commission, and there have been forty-eight elections and three initial appointments (and other interim appointments) since statehood. All commissioners have been Democrats except Robert H. (Bob) Anthony, E. R. Hughes, J. C. Watts Jr., Ed Apple, Denise Bode, and Jeff Cloud, all Republicans.
