Ken does not have a surname for the lady you say is Sarah Bailey and I have that her surname is Wellborn rather than Bailey?? I'd like to correct that if it's wrong.
If you'll look at either of those sites, you'll see that neither Ken or I have a Mary Cloud b. 1765 who m. George Elliott.
I'd very much like to know about this Mary Cloud.

.... in my poking around looking for an image of Daniel's letter, I found several sites that say he was Melungeon and/or Redbone.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gowenrf/malangu.htmhttp://www.dogwoodpressonline.com/redbone.phphttp://www.afrigeneas.com/library/redbones.html
I would like to know if anyone has verified these claims. They seem to be spurious, based on the fact that Daniel was in Louisiana -- though only for a brief period of time. The descendants of John Cloud, R.S. who married Elizabeth Lacey would probably be considered redbone. Daniel is related to that branch but he is not descended from it.
Is there any substantive evidence supporting these claims?

Thanks Lura - I believe this IS the William Null Susan married. Susan
would have been 21 in 1880, as shown on the census in Fannin Co, TX.
Just guessing, there could have been two reasons she, her mother and
the others would have been in that area. First, Margaret Drummond
Cloud had a brother named Alexander King who left her in Murray GA and
"went to Texas" before, or about, the time she and James Madison Cloud
married there in 1838. There was an Alex King in Hunt Co, TX, age 38
in the 1870 census - Greenville, TX is the county seat of Hunt Co, and
is only a short distance from Bonham, the county seat of Fannin Co,
which is where she and the others were censused in 1880. It is
possible she could have been visiting him if she knew where he was. It
is also possible that Susan and William Null were being married and the
uncommitted family members went over for the wedding (I had found a
William Null, age 18, in 1880 TX census (would have been 38 in 1900 as
show in that census, but not in the Fannin Co vicinity, and had ignored
him - probably shouldn't have - that William Null was shown as being
born in MS, which doesn't jibe with the 1900 census showing him and his
parents born in IL).
Isn't genealogy fun!! Anyway, who knows? However, I am convinced in
my own mind that this is William Null and Susan Cloud Null. Thanks for
your help. Al Cloud.

Al -- glad to see you weigh in on this. Interesting account. One minor
comment: I think there's pretty good evidence that Isaac Jr. (father of
James Madison)was still in Claiborne Co., TN, in 1816 and thus that those
census records are right. Harry

Subject: [CLOUD] James Madison Cloud
I'm not sure whether the following message was sent yesterday before I
completed it - anyway, here it is (again??).
Hi gang - maybe I can help clear up some of the James Madison Cloud
family mystery. First, on August 1, 2003, Cecil Stokes posted on the
Cloud My Family website three items I had sent him that Ray Hunt had
provided me. They can be found on that web site in the "File Cabinet"
area (look at the top and select that category). Once there, select
page 2, which should show the items posted - they can and should be
downloaded for anyone who wants to solve the mystery. In summary, my
guess is this is probably Margaret Drummond Cloud and some of her
unmarried children, because the names and dates are all too similar.
However, after their harrowing experience in 1868 (see next paragraph),
it's hard for me to imagine a 63-year old widow making that trip with
two unmarried daughters and an unmarried son, all between the ages of
20 and 31 and then returning to MS, for that's where at least two of
the four were buried.
James Madison was b. 1816 in NC, although the census records show him
as born in TN. His wife, Margaret Drummond King (whose ancestors I
have been unable to trace) was b. 1817 in TN according to census
records. They were married in Murray Co, GA in 1838 and moved back and
forth between McMinn and Polk Cos. TN and Murray Co, GA, as he
reportedly was a Baptist preacher. He died in Rapides parish, LA in
1868 after the Civil War (the whole family had left TN, where he lost
everything, and they were traveling to LA "to be near relatives",
perhaps a questionable brother of James called Francis Marion Cloud.
When he died, the family started back to TN in the winter - cold and
sick, they were in Scott Co, MS when a lady named Mary (Granny) McGowan
took them in and probably saved their lives. In the spring of 1869
they decided to remain there in Scott Co, MS. I believe the data in
this paragraph and in the following paragraph came from a conversation
between Ray Hunt and William Wright Cloud, a son of Marquis de
Lafayette Cloud (see second paragraph below). William Wright died in
1980 at the age of 89 in La Feria, TX.
MARGARET DRUMMOND CLOUD (B. 1817) DIED IN MADISON CO, MS IN 1882. SHE
IS BURIED AT HAMMACK CHURCH CEMETERY LOCATED IN SEC. 22, T8N R1W ABOUT
1.5 MILES SOUTHEAST OF FLORA, MS. As was noted in the other pertinent
correspondence on this matter, she and the other children were shown
living with their son George in the 1870 census. At that time George
apparently wasn't married, but the 1880 census for Newton, MS, showed
him living with his wife, Margarite A. with children born between 1872
and 1879. It appears from the 1880 census for Fannin Co, TX (north
Texas area) that she and the girls left TN temporarily after George
married, possibly to be near or live with her son Benjamin Franklin
Cloud (see his summary below). Even so, if she and the girls made that
trip to TX, they apparently returned to MS, as she was buried in MS and
so was her daughter Sarah Jane who died in Vicksburg.
James Madison Cloud and Margaret Drummond Cloud had nine children:
George Washington, b. 1839 GA, m. Margarite Armenta Taylor, b. 1849
MS
Marquis de Lafayette (Marcus) Cloud, b. 1842 GA, M. Henrietta
Virginia
Petty Andrews, settled in Scott Co, MS, buried there. A
large
portion of his family moved to south TX in 1924.
Mary Jane, b. 1845, never married.
Sebren Jefferson (my father (his grandson), said his name was
Samuel;
a census (1850) spelled it Seaborn very clearly). S. J.
married three
times and died in Vicksburg, MS in 1928.
Susan Margaret, b. 1849 GA, married William Null. I've never been
able to trace what happened to her. It also occurred to me that
the
mother, two daughters and the son might have gone to TX for Susan's
wedding to William Null, but I couldn't find a William Null that
might match in TX at that time.
Elizabeth Ellen, b. 1855, Polk Co, TN, never married.
Benjamin Franklin. b. 1856, Polk Co, TN, d. 1920 in RUSK CO, TX; m.
Josephine Taylor, b. 1860, Scott Co., MS, d. 1938 in HELENA, TX.
Benjamin had several children, including: Ora, b. 1878, married in
LAVACA CO, TX; ROY, B. 1882 IN COLEMAN CO, TX, AND SEVERAL OTHERS
B.
IN KARNES CO, TX. This man moved all over Texas - north, south, east
and west! I FOUND HIM IN ROBERTSON CO, TX (TOO FAR AWAY) IN THE
1880
CENSUS TAKEN JUST 12 DAYS AFTER HIS MOTHER PRESUMABLY WAS
COUNTED IN
FANNIN CO, TX. Sarah Jane, b. 1859, never married, d. Vicksburg, MS
Willaim Buchanan, b. 1860, d. 1925, m. Georgia Lewis.
So that's about all I can offer - pay your money and take your choice!
Best regards to all of you Clouds, Al Cloud.

Hi Al....
I was just playing around with the census and I found "a" Susan Null born
about 1859 in Georgia, married to William. Are they the same people or do they
just coincidentally have some similar identifying facts? These people are
living in Durrant, Choctow Cty, Indian Terr in the 1900 census. Did you
already know about this family?
William Null, born Apr 1862, 38, married 20 years.IL, parents born IL,

GA, mother VA

It would appear this is not them...because her parents are born in different

Tom,
I don't disagree with the fact that you have solid records of a James
Madison Cloud. I will admit that I know little or nothing about him. What
I am pointing out is the fact there were at least four James Madison Clouds
who lived in the same general area and during the same general time period.
The challenge for me has been tracking my James Madison Cloud back through
the migration routes without getting him confused with one of the other
JMC's. For example, my JMC had a brother named George Washington Cloud and
a brother named Benjamin Franklin Cloud. At the same time my JMC was
living in Jackson County, AL, (where he died and is buried) another JMC was
living in Madison County, AL. All of these JMC's were probably fairly
closely related, but I have not be able to map put the relationship.

Tom - my apologies. I just went back to your original message and found
that I misread it. I thought you were trying to tie a J. M. Cloud married
to a Susannah Cole to Joseph 1710. I don't think there's any doubt that
these people in Texas were of the family of James Madison Cloud b. 1816.
Harry
Tom -- I can't say I'm absolutely certain, but here is the list of Isaac's
son James Madison, with some of their progeny. If this is accurate -- and I
got it from a descendant of his -- there was no James Madison Jr. Maybe one
of the sons named a son for the grandfather. Do the dates fit? At any
rate, Al Cloud should be able to clear this up. Harry

Subject: Re: [CLOUD] family of James Madison CLOUD (1880)
That's what I want to know -- how do you know this isn't the family of James
Madison Cloud b. 1816 and Margaret Drummond King? All the names, birth
places and birth dates fit.
My questions about it are these:
- she is enumerated as "Mrs. D." (maybe someone else can look at that and
see if I'm reading it correctly)
- they were in Louisiana in 1868 -- but why would they (or just the widow)
travel to Fannin cty, TX? (That's about 150 miles NW of Shreveport, LA) If
this is them, then it doesn't look like any of those on the census stayed in
Texas. (Don't know where Susan died. Sarah and W.B. both purportedly died
in Mississippi.)
As near as I can tell, all the other children were either married or dead by
1880, so that explains why they weren't with their mother.
Please tell me why you're certain this is not the family of James Madison
Cloud (1816 NC) son of Isaac Cloud.

I don't know if this is where the Clouds that were my fathers relatives
or not, but my half sister Jennie Cloud was buried in Indiana, where I
don't know, just that she died and was buried there. I do know that she
had scarlet fever and only my father and the grave digger were at her
burial because they did not allow anyone else around since what she had
was contagious. She was six years old I believe. But, since most of the

a nursing home in Austin, TX. But believe me she still has a good memory
at 98 years of age. Her name is Milvinia Cloud Kohlert. She was born
