Subject: RE: [CLOUD] Cloud Questions
Al -- WRT your first question (re: Nicholas Cloud(s)), I came across a
recent post on the Cloud surname site of Rootsweb. Frankly, I think a lot
of it is questionable, but it did contain what appears to be historically
verifiable info. on the Nicholas Cloud (and his family) you ask about.
Here's the pertinent excerpt (note that it appears to be a section of some
family history, taken out of context, which makes many of the references
meaningless):
"These records, when taken together, point out some interesting
connections to the allied families of the Coode/Cude line. The Goldsmith
family was related to the Coode and Gerrard families.. The Cloud family,
through their marriages to the Lane, Allred and Beeson families became
cousins and in-laws to the Coode/Cude family. They traveled with us to NC.

Finding the Husband and Cloud families in the same records this early, is
interesting because of their involvement with the Quaker movement.
1768-Herman Husband, the promenade Quaker, Was the Leader of Quaker Farmers
in Orange Co. NC. He organized the Regulator movement, which spread to
surrounding counties. Timothy Coode fought in this battle. The movement was
in protest to Religious persecution, excessive taxation and abuses by public
officials.

Collector and Navall Officer live near each other, it being necessary, they

The period covered was a time of big border disputes between the Calverts
and Lord De La Warr, so some sections of Maryland were sometimes claimed to
be part of Delaware and vice versa. The poster (Vernon Cude) holds that
these early Maryland Clouds were Quaker and that at some point some of them
left Md. and headed for Chester Co., PA. If he's right, both of those
things would point to a connection and a good probability that, as you say,
the Maryland crowd were also out of Wiltshire.

Subject: [CLOUD] Cloud Questions
Several years ago I posed several Cloud questions on the GenForum site.
Inasmuch as we are now in the process of a very interesting and
information DNA project and Tom Cloud is searching for other
descendants, and also because of the continuing question of the
ancestors of the Jeremiah Cloud of Georgia, I am repeating those
questions below. Any ideas??
1. Who was the Nicholas Cloud(s) who sold 100 acres of land (called
Sherrin, Shearin, Sherrer ?) in Kent Co, DE, out of a 500 acre grant to
Nicholas Cloud August 25, 1704? I haven't seen him mentioned any other
place. Interesting, in that the mother of William of Calne may have
been a Jane Nycholas. Perhaps he was a brother or cousin of William of
Calne.
I guess that means if they passed, they must have studied.....*S*..

Fact is much of the family information I have compiled came directly from them. New at this message board stuff, sorry I did not understand it's use. Dennis T. McElhannon

Nancy,
To which Daniel William Cloud do you refer? This thread is about Daniel, who died at the Alamo in 1836. He was 21 years old when he died, was unmarried and had no children.
You mention a wife Nancy -- are you referring to Daniel who married Nancy Owens? His g-g-granddaughter, Cordelia Cloud married James McDonald McElhannon. Is that your line?

Thank you for explaining. I really appreciate your help. If you know of any other sites that could help get this book out there I would appreciate it.
I did not write this book to make money. I only get $4.00 per book. I wrote it for the history involved and no one will know this history unless I can get it to the public.
Thanks again.

Tom,
I believe this Robert C. Cloud is in your mykindred.com as Robert "Clarence" Cloud (L72914). I have him as the oldest of eight children of Fielden Zeno Cloud. If you do not have the other children of Fielden I will be glad to send you my data on them.
Keep up the good research.

My next option is to get on the phone and call Cloud families in that area, but they've been gone for over 30 years.

Harry Hogan has written an excellent analysis of the Cloud-Thrasher
connection. His article appeared in the CFJ, Vol. 22, No. 4, pp 85-90.
While his emphasis was on documents pertaining to Elizabeth (Cloud) Layne
and her father, Isaac Cloud, Harry alludes to a connection with the
Thrasher family. Richard Thrasher filed a court affidavit on behalf of
Elizabeth. In that same time and place (Pittsylvania County, VA., 1768-70)
a Ruth Cloud married John Thrasher and according to Thrasher family records
they had two sons named Isaac Cloud Thrasher and Joseph Cloud Thrasher.
Here is a copy of a land transaction involving Joseph Cloud Thrasher.
page 62-B: July 21, 1793: Micajah Williamson of Wilkes Co.,
Ga., to Joseph Cloud Thrasher of Rockingham County of the State
of North Carolina." 800 acres in Franklin Co., being part of two
surveys of 1150 acres each for said Williamson Jan. 14, 1786 and
July 25, 1787, adjoining each other and bounded on the southeast
by the Washington County line, when surveyed, and on the southwest
by the south fork of Oconee River and said Williamson's land.

Hi Tom...I have been tied up for a while, but I tried finding these people

I found nothing that looked even close in the 1930 census. In 1920 census
no one born around 1902 using the name Robert either.

Subject: Two Drown, Two Saved Nov. 12, 1889 The Pittsburgh Post
Two Lost, Two Saved
Sad Double Drowning in the Monongahela River
Half the occupants of a capsized boat sink--the others make miraculous
escape.
About 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon a drowning of an extremely sad
nature occurred at the foot of South Tenth street by which two boys named
Willie WILLIAMS, aged fifteen years, and Eddie ROBERTS, aged fifteen years,
were lost. The lads, in company with two others named Tommy MURRAY and Mike GALLAGHER, all of whom are employed as "pull up" boys in OLIVER's Fifteenth street mill, went down to the river to play, the bill being idle. They found a skiff, into which the quartet climbed. The had gotten only a short distance from the shore when the boat capsized, spilling the occupants into the water.
WILLIAMS and ROBERTS sank and were not seen again. Young ROBERTS grasped a rope attached to some barges and was rescued by a man named
CLOUD. GALLAGHER went under the barges and floated down the river as far as the Pan Handle Railroad bridge. He managed in some unaccountable way, as he could not swim, to keep his head above water, and was finally rescued by a man named JAMES, who went out after him in a skiff.
WILLIAMS lived with his parents at South Sixteenth and Carson streets,
and ROBERTS' parents lived in Rhey's row on South Seventeenth street. At 10 o'clock last night neither of the bodies had been found.

Perhaps he was a brother or cousin of William of
Calne.
2. What happened to the Robert Cloud who arrived in Jamestown, VA, in
1643? Could he have been a brother , uncle or cousin of the William of
Calne? If William of Calne’s father was a Robert Cloud, and inasmuch
as William named one of his sons Robert, it is suspiciously
coincidental.
3. Who was the Elizabeth Cloud, age 11, living with the Thomas Ballew,
age 30, family in the 1850 census for McMinn Co, TN? The listing of
that family also includes several "Ricky" children.
4. Who was the Francis M. Cloud, Pvt., Webbs Company - 2 I1 Foot
Volunteers who served in the Mexican War 1846-1848? Isaac Cloud, Jr.,
age 63, b. SC, is in the 1850 Murray Co, GA, census, along with his
sons George and Benjamin. His son James Madison Cloud lives nearby with
his family. According to family stories gathered through conversations
by Ray Hunt (now deceased), Isaac had another son, Francis Marion
Cloud, who "moved to Texas prior to the Civil War." The 1830 census for
McMinn Co, TN, shows Isaac with one male 0-4 years of age (Benjamin),
one male 10-15 years of age (James Madison), and two males between
20-30 years of age (George, b. 1810, and perhaps Francis Marion b. ca
1800 - 1809 ?). There were a total of five females under 20 years of
age. The Cloud Family Journal (CFJ), July 1980, lists among Williamson
Co, TN, marriages that of Francis M. Cloud to Sarah Jane Temple,
September 15, 1844, bondsman Harrison Boxley. The same reference shows
Boxley marrying Nancy Ellen Cloud on December 24, 1839. Was the Francis
Marion Cloud who was in the Mexican War and the Francis Marion who
married Sarah Temple the same person? And was he the missing son the
descendants of Isaac all believed "went to Texas before the Civil War?"
In any event, what happened to this (these?) Francis Marion(s)?
5. AND, who was the F. M. Cloud listed as a private in Milam Guards,
Company I, mustered September 24, 1861, who died of pneumonia at age 20
in Albuquerque, NM, on March 31, 1862? CFJ Vol. XVIII, No. 4.
In a response to question 5, above, M. B. Cloud replied on GenForum
that “Francis Marion (aka Frank, F. M.) joined the Milam Guards along
with his brother John Clark Cloud. They were the sons of Jeremiah
Cloud who came to Texas from Georgia in 1836.” I thought the Francis
Marion that M. B. is referring to lived and had a family that many of
the Texas Clouds are descended from. Any ideas?
In re Questions 4 and 5 concerning a Francis Marion Cloud, I now find
that page 37 of CFJ Vol. XVI, No. 2, attributes the Francis Marion
Cloud who served in the Mexican War to be the son of a Jemima Cloud and
George Cloud, of Illinois, based on a pension application made in 1879
by Jemima. Sooo, the questions remains: What happened to the Francis
Marion who was the reported brother of George, James Madison and
Benjamin Cloud - perhaps the F. M. Cloud described in Question 5 who
died at age 20?
