The name looks like Amer in both censuses (although much clearer in 1920) to
me. There is a male Amer Cloud in the 1920 Indiana census. There is a WWII
draft registration card for an Amer Harlin Cloud. So the name seems to
exist.... In the 1930 census listing for the family, it looks to me as if
what was originally 14 was "corrected" to 44, and whoever was doing the
"correcting" couldn't fathom a 44-year-ol being the daughter of another
44-year-old, hence "corrected" the relationship of "daughter" to "relative."

I guess I forgot and wasn't finished...I was going to try and run down
Charles also... When I queried the 1850 Ancestry.com database for Charles Cloud,
born about 1849, and currently living in Indiana (since that is where he was
born), I only came up with one possibility as follows:
1850, Indiana, Tipton, Tipton, taken Aug 1850, page 238 (A&B)
George Cloud, 31, TN, no occupation (this is close to Kentucky)
Rhenama Cloud, 27, NC (this was ancestry.com interpretation of name also)
Mary Cloud, 5, IN
Thomas Cloud, 3, IN
Charles Cloud, 1, IN
1860 Census, Indiana, Tipton, CIcero, taken 16 Jun
George Cloud, 41, farmer, TN
Rheunisor/Rheumaor, 37, NC
Mary, 14, IN
Thomas, 12, IN
Charles, 11, IN
John, 9, IN
George, 7, IN
James B., 5, IN
Francis, 4, IN (female)
Emily, 1, IN (twin)
Emma, 1, IN (twin)
1870 Census, Indiana, Tipton, Wildcat, 1 Aug, p. 588
Cloud, George, 50, farmer, TN
Reuann, 48, NC
Charles, 20, IN
John, 17, IN
George, 16, IN
Frances E., 15 (female), IN
James, 12, IN
Minor, 8, IN (male)
[No Cloud's were listed on the next page](also, this must mean that the
twins died and then they had another child, a boy named Minor)
1880 Census, Iowa, Appanoose, Centerville, taken 22 Jun, page 550
Cloud, George, 60, TN, NC, NC, day laborer
Cloud, Margret J., 32, wife, OH, VA, VA (would appear his first wife died
and this is a second)
Cloud, John, 30, son, laborer, IN, TN, TN
Cloud, George W, 27, son, laborer, IN, TN, TN
Cloud, Francis E., 19 (now this one is listed as a son), laborer, IN, TN, TN
Cloud, Minor, 17, son, laborer, IN, TN, TN
Brown, Florence, 4, granddaughter, IN, IN, IN
Brown, George, 11, grandson, IN, IN, IN
Snider, Altie B., 9, step-daughter, IO, OH, OH
Cloud, James B., 5, grandson, IO, TN, OH
Cloud, Alice C., 3, granddaughter, IO, IN, IO
Cloud, Ollie/Allie B., 6 month (born in Nov), (shown as a female and also
shown as a son), IO, IN, IO
For anyone interested, it would appear that Charles Cloud may have moved to
Center, Cloud, KS for the 1880 census, age 31, born IN, father born TN,
mother born NC. Wife, Rebecca, children: Stella, age 5, baby Cloud, 1 month.

By 1900, the census shows the younger Lee/Leander, now 26 still living next door to Elizabeth, with a son, Thomas. (I don't know anything about him.) I'm assuming Benjamin and Matilda have passed away, as I haven't been able to find them anywhere else.

Tom,
I think you have him listed as Madison, one of several variant spellings I've seen. He would have been born in 1851 or 1852 according to the two censuses I can find him in. You also have Lee Cloud and Mary Alice Coffey with their family...they are just not currently connected to Madison/Matison

I'm afraid I may have been mistaken about there being a marriage record for Matt and Elizabeth, as I can't find anything in my records. I'm convinced that the Victoria Cloud who married Lee Hipshire is the sister of Lee/Leander, and her death certificate shows Mat and Elizabeth Cloud as her parents. The only glitch is that my father-in-law believes that Victoria came to visit his family when he was a boy, but this Victoria died earlier than that, so if I am right, it would have had to be someone else who came to visit. If you would like to contact me by e-mail, I can send you copies of the death certificates.

The 1880 census of Grainger County, TN, shows Elizabeth Cloud, age 39 (matches an 1840 birth date), with a 5 year old son named Leander. She is living next door to a Benjamin Cloud, age 62, who has an 18 year old son named Lee. It sounds like any other sons (no longer living with him) of this Benjamin would be worth pursuing as a potential father of Leander. Al Cloud.

Tom -- I think Cindy is right and that the name is "Madison." Apparently it
was common in the old days to turn the nickname "Mad" into "Matt." Later,
people assumed that the "Matt" was short for "Mattison." In connection
with this, someone might want to take note of Madison Moss Cloud, a son of
Jeremiah and Karen (Berry) Cloud. I don't have his birth date, but it
should appear in the 1850 census of Bradley Co., TN. In 1852, this family
moved to Saline Co., Ark. Harry P.S. One of the e-mails in this
thread mentioned a Moss family connection.

In my work on this family, I basically agree with this analysis and would add the following for your consideration in tracing this family back. Henry is my great (4) grandfather :
Henry Cloud b.1720 DE d.9/25/1787 Front Royal, VA
m) Eleanor Williams or Elizabeth Harden
1+ William Cloud b.ca1745 d.ca1796 KY

living, KY, KY, KY
Cloud, Norma E, daughter, Feb 1890, 10, OH, IN, KY
Cloud, Russell A., son, Sep 1892, 7, OH, IN, KY
Here is a possibility for the father of Thomas:
1880 census, Indiana, Dearborn, Logan, taken 7 Jun, page 205 (a & b), family
12/12
Cloud, John, 44, IN, KY, VA, can't make out occupation

Cloud, Fanie, 10, daughter, IN, IN, IN
Cloud, Mattie, 8, daughter, IN, IN, IN
Cloud, Addia, 5, daughter, IN, IN, IN
There are 5 other Cloud families that live in Dearborn County. This is the
only one that lives in Logan. The above was the best match I found for
Thomas. I don't think I would gain any additional information by looking at the
1870 census. I suspect it would just show the same family with ages 10 years
younger....maybe it would show the daughters names clearer. Daughters names
very difficult to make out. I do agree with Ancestry.com that that's what
they look like. So, I'll go see if I can find them.
1870 census, Indiana, Dearborn, Logan, taken 12 Jul,
Cloud, John, 35, IN, farmer
Cloud, Maria, 34, IN
Cloud, John, 13, IN
Cloud, Mary M, 10, IN
Cloud, Thomas, 8, IN
Cloud, M. Jane, 4, IN
Cloud, Caroline, 9 months, IN
The family right before this is:
Cloud, John, 72, KY, farm rented
Cloud, Mary, 68, IN
Clark, Sallie, 19, OH - no indication of relationship
I would say that his was his father, except that Mary is shown born in
Indiana instead of Virginia. There are a total of 22 Cloud's shown by
ancestry.com to be living in Logan, Dearborn, IN during the 1870 census.
There are only 2 John Cloud's shown by ancestry.com to be living in Logan,
Dearborn, IN during the 1850 census and the son is about the right age. Page
318
John W. Cloud, 52 Cooper, KY
Mary Cloud, 50, IN
John R. Cloud, 14, IN
Melissa Cloud, 4, IN
The thing that doesn't seem to fit is that John (the one born about 1855/6
shows his mother born in Virginia, yet Mary (born about 1800 was born in IN).

Debra,
Have you looked at Ken Cloud's site
http://cloudweb.org ?
... or at the site I maintain
http://mykindred.com ?
I can't be sure, but I think your Isom Cloud is at:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I119540&tree=mykindr...
Dead ends like yours are perfect candidates for the Cloud DNA Project. It can help narrow your search to branches more closely related to yours -- conversely, it can eliminate wasted effort on branches that are unrelated.
If so, there is already one person from that family in the DNA Project -- but we could use more. That person's name isn't shown, because he is living, but his record is at:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I125445&tree=mykindr...
Are you a member of the Cloud email list? ... or of the Cloud Family Association? The CFA publishes a very thorough journal, which is available on CD. It is a great research resource also.
The DNA project information can be found at
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna
I hope this helps.
sincerely,
Tom Cloud

I spent a while trying to find Jacob and Ella in the 1900 census. No avail.
And we know 1890 is out. So my next attempt was 1880. I figured Jacob was
a son at this point so I queried for Jacob Cloud born in Texas.
Here is a possibility:
1880 census, Texas, Hunt County, Precinct 6, taken 4 Jun, p.556
Cloud, Victoria, 38, keeping house, TX, TX, TX
Cloud, Francis, 17, daughter, TX, TX, TX
Cloud, Jacob, 14, son, farm laborer, TX, TX, TX
Cloud, Bell, 11, daughter, TX, TX, TX
Cloud, George, 9, son, TX, TX, TX
I cannot find Victoria or any of this family in the 1870 census. I queried
1860 census for Victoria, born TX, living in Texas. I came up with 2.
Victoria Preest, born about 1843, living in Gonzales County, TX. and Victoria O.
Thomas, born about 1843, living in Precinct 6, Lamar County, TX.
Hmmmm....Precinct 6, huh. Lamar and Hunt counties are right next to each other. Could
it be that Hunt County was created after 1870? If I could locate them in the
1870 census I suspect I would be able to find a father for this Jacob Cloud.
I queried every way I could think and came up empty.

All thus far have been born in Indiana but for Isom who appears to have been born in North Carolina. There was an Isom Jr. as well, maybe he was the one born in NC. Any information anyone may have on this line I would greatly appreciate! My mother was adopted and never knew her mother/family. As I never knew mine. I am anxious to trace them back. I know that Freida was Married to a Harmon Cloud but I cannot find any records that assist in the trace.

Thanks so much for the information. Do you have a marriage record for Mattison and Elizabeth? If not, do you remember where you saw it. My father was James Madison Cloud son of Matt Cloud son of Leander. It is nice to hear from someone who knows our family. My name is Laurie. Thanks again for the information.

Matt Cloud was my grandfather and he was married to Dessie Moss. My sister and I also have Matison Cloud as a possible father for Leander.
