I can add some more clues:
His mother -- Audrey A. Cloud, May 19, 1908 - July 30, 2003, Dayton, Montgomery, OH; 274-22-6918 issued OH.
I'm guessing that Ronald Cloud, 1-9-1929 - 11-1987; SSN 296-20-7740 (OH) LR & LB Dayton, Montgomery, OH; is his brother ???
Anyone recognize these people?
thanks,
Tom

He was b. May 23, 1934 and d. Feb 6, 1976
Hillsboro Press Gazette; Feb 10, 1976, Hillsboro, OH, p. 5
Rites Held For Cloud
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Funeral services were scheduled today for Montgomery County administrator Thomas Cloud, 41, who died Friday of a heart attack.
Cloud, who served in a variety of public service posts, including county commissioner and Wayne Township trustee, ran unsuccessfully in 1974 for the Republican nomination for state auditor. He lost to Roger W. Tracy Jr.
Former county Administrator Paul Stockert said Cloud talked continually about innovations in county government. He said Cloud was interested in efforts to link city and county administration in such places as Ind., and Nashville, Tenn.
"I think once he accepted the job as county administrator he never gave much thought to politics," said Stockert.
Cloud, an industrial engineer, was a graduate of the General Motors Institute He was a sales coordinator at GM's Delco-Moraine division here until he quit to become county commissioner in 1969.
Remembering his working schedule, his mother, Audrey Cloud, said she told him recently, "Tom, you can't do this, you just have to slow down.. "He died doing what he wanted to do...I think that has some importance," she said.
The Dec. 8, 1928 issue of "The Gleaner" of Kingston, Jamaica, p. 6 has an article beginning:
"Col. Cloud To Go Off To England
Expressions of regret at the departure of Colonel Thomas Cloud, Territorial Commander of the Salvation Army in the West Indies who will be leaving here to-day for England to attend the meeting of the High Council of the Army which has been called to deal with certain important matters of the Army, were made by local officers of this organization at a farewell meeting held at Central Hall on Thursday night last. ....."
Further in the article his wife mentions her 40 year relationship with him -- putting their marriage back to about 1888.
Does anyone know who this man is?
I will put the complete newspaper article on-line in a bit -- let me know if you're interested in seeing it.

Hi Tom Cloud:
I just recently got around to reading your message of 29 Nov. 2007 on the
subject matter. I think the assumption that our CLOUD family name
originated in FRANCE is most likely the correct answer regarding the organ
our family name. Note my explanation which follows.
My mother was Beatrice (Leatrice) Cloud of the Cloud's Cove area of north
AL; near New Hope, AL. New Hope was once named Cloud's Town, AL.* She matured
in nearby Hobbs Island village, situated a few miles southeast and adjacent to
the TN River; which is now part of the city of Huntsville, AL.
My daughter lives in the Paris, FRANCE area and I have gone there many times
over the years. A long time ago I noted that a suburban train destination
city near Paris was named CLOUD, so I investigated the place a little bit!
What I found out about the CLOUD city, was that it was named after and early
Church Official who never married! However, I learned that it wasn't
uncommon in recent church history for Catholic church officials to have mistresses;
according to French History that I have read. So, it's possible that some of
the Church Official's offspring migrated to England during the Norman
Invasion; before moving on to North America a few generations later!
Happy New Year Tom.
Tom King, Sr.
Near Leesburg, VA
PS: *Cloud's Town, AL was initially named after my great-great-grandfather
William Cloud, an early settler near New Hope, AL area. However, there was
another town in south AL with the same name, so the locals had to rename their
village and they called it New Hope, AL; in order to get their mail delivered
to my ancestor's store that was situated in the new city of New Hope, AL.
There is a small mountain near where William CLOUD and family initially
settled in north AL, it is named CLOUD Mountain. There is also a CLOUD Cemetery,
which still active in the same area, called Cloud's Cove Cemetery. An earlier
CLOUD cemetery no longer exists; when I located it's site many years ago, it
was covered with pine trees and there was only one tombstone laying in a
roadside ditch.
William Cloud migrated to AL with his adult children during the early
1800's. He purchased a lot of farm land in the area and ran a general grocery store
in the New Hope area. He was also one of the original promoter's for the
city of New Hope. He owned several lots within the city before his death and
also when he died, he still owned a lot there.
William CLOUD died in Nashville, TN, where he had migrated a few years
before his death in 1845; to live near a daughter and her family. His estate was
probated in both Davidson Co. TN and in Madison Co. AL. In AL, his estate was
in the probate process for 50 years!
The legal probate record summary contained a lot of genealogical
information. But the supporting document file was checked out by an attorney-judge, who
was a law partner of a distant relative and former neighbor of mine named
Attorney Earl Cloud; and the file was never returned, according to a records
clerk that I spoke with some years ago. TK.

I was looking for variations of the BUMSTEAD surname and thought I'd take a
look at variations of the CLOUD surname. I keep finding the same old stuff
that says it is a derivative of the McCLEOD surname -- which isn't supported
by any facts I know of.
So, I looked at some variants I know of -- CLOUD / CLOUDE / CLOWD / CLAUD
... and the CLAUD name looked interesting. This site wants us all to think
our surname has a coat of arms -- but their information on the surname is
interesting -- and it reinforces some other information we have.
http://www.houseofnames.com/fc.asp?sId=&s=claud
Claud Family Crest and Name History
Origin Displayed: French
Spelling variations of this family name include: Clot, Claude, Cloux,
Claudet, Clausel, Glaude, Claud, Claudel, Claudin and many more.
First found in the region of Languedoc where they held many lands and
estates.
Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were:
Claude Claude who arrived in Quebec in 1647; Philipe Claud who arrived in
Virginia in 1705; Joachim Claude who settled in Louisiana in 1715; J. Clausel
who settled in New Orleans in 1842.
?? Have any of you observed any of these variants being used by our people?
thanks,
Tom Cloud

Debra,
It is true that Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (http://smgf.org) does DNA testing for free. There are several negatives that you ought to know also. One, they do not share their data, so it is technically impossible for us to include it in our Cloud DNA Project. (This can be overcome if you record your allele values and send them to the DNA Project administrator at clouddna(a)mykindred.com). Another negative is that you may not receive results for up to a year. Also, they don't test the same markers as those we're using, which can make comparison more difficult.
Please take a look at the Cloud DNA Project results page -- you will see two SMGF tests there. Getting them for the page was a real hassle (I know, I'm the one that got the data) and one data point was seriously in error -- and it took me a long time to convince them to listen to me and correct the error.
SMGF is definitely a viable alternative for someone who can't afford the DNA test -- but remember -- one trip to an out-of-town library or courthouse can easily cost as much as the DNA test, once you count the cost of gasoline, time off, meals, copies, etc. ... and especially if you spend the night in a motel.
The Cloud DNA Project results (with the two SMGF tests) can be seen at:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cdnareport.php
The SMGF tests don't have kit numbers like our other tests do, so I created kit numbers -- they are 0SG01 and 0SG02.

Please forgive the two identical posts -- I got an Error message implying the post didn't go through, so I tried again.
WRT Sorenson -- SMGF -- one other thing I forgot to mention is that their claim "The Sorenson Database is the foremost collection of genetic genealogy data in the world" is good advertising -- and they claim to have over 21,000 men in their Y-database and over 42,000 mtdna tests. This looks pretty good until you look around.
Compare SMGF's 21,000 Y-DNA and 42,000 mtdna samples to the over 112,000 Y-DNA tests and over 57,000 mtdna tests of Family Tree DNA (as of this December) and tell me who has "the foremost collection of genetic genealogy in the world". And compare FTDNA's 6 to 8 weeks for test results to the extended waits to get a result back from SMGF -- I have people telling me that they have waited over 6 years to get a test result returned, and most people I've heard from say it takes well over a year. (I am a member of a DNA project administrator's group and I hear stories most project participants don't hear.)
I don't want to champion any one company over another, but you ought to know the other side to the "free" dna tests given by SMGF.

What got me off-track and into the previous thread were the graves I found for Hubert and Margaret Cloude. I was wondering if they were CLOUDs, so I began to search.
Hubert Cloude was b. Nov 12 1900 and his SSN was issued in Arkansas, so I looked for CLOUDE and CLOUD in AR census.
In 1910, there is a Hubert Cloud, step-son, in this household:
1910 census, AR, Yell, Riley, ed 174, 4-A, (T624-68, p.223)
April 19, 1910, HH 64/66

" , Emmie wife, F, W, 37, m2, 2 yrs, 1/1 child, AR, US, US
" , Carl, son, 16, AL, AL, AL
Cloud, Hubert, step son, M, W, 9, AR, AR, AR
(If anyone can read Moses' surname, please tell me what it is.)
This Hubert is the right age to be the same person -- but is he?
... so, I looked at other Clouds in Yell county, AR.
1900 census, AR, Yell, Riley, ed 159, 14-B, (T623-80, p.317)
June 14, 1900, HH 245/249
Cloud, Samuel, head, W, M, Mar 1879, 21, m 4 yrs, AR, TN, TN
" , Emma, wife, W, F, Dec 1874, 26, m 4 yrs, 0/0 children, AR, AR, AR
1900 census, AR, Yell, Riley, ed 159, 11-B, (T623-80, p.314)
June 12, 1900, HH 188, all b. AR
Cloud, James (F/E ?), head, W, M, Aug 1875, 24, m 8 yrs
" , Lida A, wife, W, F, Apr 1874, 26, m 8 yrs, 3/3 children
" , Bertha B, dau, Aug 1894, 5
" , Della M, dau, Aug 1896, 3
" , Lenny, son, Aug 1899, 9/12
" , Robert A, brother, W, M, Nov 1882, 18
These two men are the ones I had as children of Benjamin Cloud and Sarah Pelton -- and who I decided are actually the children of Abner Pierce Cloud. .... and that's how that previous thread got started.
So -- I'm back to my original quest .... who is Hubert P. Cloude -- is he related to Abner Pierce Cloud? Hubert's wife is Lorene Margaret Cloude and her SSN was issued in AR also.
They both died and are buried in Irving, TX.
thanks,
Tom Cloud
Ken,
First -- I didn't get your attachment. The rootsweb mail lists won't accept attachments, just as they don't allow any text formatting (i.e. no html formatted text). This keeps the lists from being a source of any contamination (viruses) to your computer.
WRT my question and your notes about it -- I don't know the answer. I just realized that those two families are living two households apart in 1850 also.
Having data which is mostly contributed, even though I attempt to verify it, means I'm bound to have some errors. I can only vouch for my Jeremiah branch.
If anyone can help determining if and where any errors occur in these two lines, please let me (and Ken) know.

Lura, et al,
I've updated the site with all that you've contributed and what I found.
(What's New http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/whatsnew.php )
I've removed James E., William L. and Samuel P./R. from the family of Benjamin Cloud and Sarah Pelton -- as it is very clear to me they belong to Abner Pierce Cloud. The youngest son, Robert, is identified by his being in the household of James E. Cloud in 1900 and being his brother.
Elnathan D. Cloud, father of Abner Pierce Cloud:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I75478&tree=mykindred01
Benjamin Franklin Cloud, h/o Sarah Pelton:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I67173&tree=mykindred01
WRT your question about Elizabeth w/o Elnathan D. Cloud -- she first married Andrew Carmack:
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I125410&tree=mykindr...
The Samuel Gaines (Cloud) and Wm. A. (Cloud) in 1860 census are actually Samuel and William Carmack. She must have been pregnant with her third child by Andrew when she married Elnathan Cloud (Elizabeth Carmack isn't on 1861 census and is 9 in 1870 census).
Take a look and correct me if you see anything wrong or that needs to be added -- wish we had someone from that branch doing research on it.
thanks,
Tom Cloud

Mary Jane,
I'm not Ken -- I'm Tom. If you send your information to me, I will see that Ken gets it also. I will write you off the list about ways to do that.

While researching another person (email about that later), I ran into the
children I show for Benjamin Cloud
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I67173&tree=mykindred01
who was married to Sarah Pelton.
I find what looks like these exact same children with Abner Pierce Cloud and
wife Mary.
I also can't find any proof that people by the same name (and birth dates)
belong to Benjamin Cloud and Sarah Pelton -- IOW, where are they on 1880
census?
Here is census record --
The first family appears to be that of Elnathan D. Cloud and Elizabeth
Johnson -- but I don't have a daughter for them born ca 1863 and I can't make out
the daughter's name.
http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/getperson.php?personID=I75478&tree=mykindred01
The second family is that of Abner Pierce Cloud, brother of Elnathan D.
Cloud. These are the children with same name and birth date as I have for Benj.
and Sarah (Pelton) Cloud.

I don't know if this will provide and help or not, but this is what I can
add:
First I started trying to run down Elizabeth, Elnathan and whatever I could
find on the family. I started with the 1880 census then went backward.

alive, and living in TN, this is the only one shown that would be in the
right "year range" to be his father.
I tried to go forward into 1900 and have had much difficulty...might have
