I have a James Washington Cloud who is also my brickwall. He is married to Margaret Elizabeth Young in the 1850 Noble Township, Wabash, Indiana census. According to that census he would have been born about 1800 in Virginia.

Looking for the parents of James Cloud who was married to Margaret Watkins in the 1850 census in Indiana, Orange Co., Northwest Township. This is my line but James is a brick wall for me. Thanks
Roberta, there was another lady in Webster Co MO 1860 which I believe was likely a widowed daughter-in-law of Benjamin CLOUD & Susannah BONDURANT. If she was a daughter-in-law, I do not know her husband's name. Her name was Mary A. and she was widowed living in Marshall Co AL in 1850.
The reason I suspect she was a daughter-in-law is because two of the sons with her in 1850 were living with Benjamin Franklin & his mother Susannah in 1860 Webster Co MO. The census indicates she had some children born in Indiana. I have no idea if it might have been Hamilton Co IN which you might identify with if you have some strays there in deeds, marriages, or other records. Here are the census records for Mary.

I have been following the discussion of Cloud families in Tennessee with
interest as in my line, Elizabeth CLOUD, born about 1765, Stokes County,
NC married Richard BONDURANTabout 1789 in NC. Their daughter, Jane
Bondurant, was born about 1791 in North Carolina, but moved with her
husband Nathaniel Barnes to Claiborne County, Tennessee, for a time,
probably after 1810.
Barnes was a Methodist minister, and Bondurant was a descendant of a
Huguenot refugee who came into Virginia in1700. Probably they did not stay
long in Tennessee as Barnes and Jane's parents all died in Hamilton County,
Indiana. Elizabeth Cloud Bondurant had some familial connection to an Isom
Cloud as shown by Indiana records, but I am unsure what the exact
connection was.
Does anyone have female descendants of Joseph or William Cloud of Stokes
County, NC? I keep thinking that Elizabeth CLOUD, b. c. 1765, Stokes
County, NC was probably a descendant of Joseph, but so far I have no proof
beyond the fact that the given name Joseph was often used among
descendants. I know of at least two Cloud-Bondurant marriages in addition
to the one in my line. That fact and the coincidence of locations make me
think that my line must connect to the other Clouds who went into
Tennessee? Ron, are you including female descendants in your "entire
picture" ?

Imogene, Ron, et al. -- You have convinced me about the identity of the
Benjamin Franklin Cloud who married Nancy Middleton. The census data you
cite, Ron, nails it. Good to have that cleared up. As to the larger
question of his father's parentage, as well as that of the Benj. F. who
married Susannah Bondurant and of the Joseph who was married to Jane
Carpenter, I tend to agree with you, Imogene, that these were all sons of
Capt. William Cloud Rev. S., of Stokes Co., NC/Henry>Patrick>Carroll Cos.,
VA, by his second wife, Elizabeth Morgan. Regarding Joseph, my notes on him
refer to P. G. Fulkerson's diary as explicitly stating that his father's
name was "William."
Parenthetically, on the subject of this Joseph and the argument
sometimes made that he was the Joseph who came "over the mountain" to what
became East Tennessee, I would like to make the point that it would not be
unlikely that any number of families in that neck of the woods at that time
had a tradition about an "over the mountain" ancestor, since that is how
virtually all of them got there. I think the fact that this Joseph (m. Jane
Carpenter) was thus labeled within his own family doesn't rule out that the
"over the mountain" Joseph in A. M. Cloud's account was, as has been argued
in a previous comment in this thread, a different and earlier Joseph: his
uncle, Capt. (Maj.?) Joseph Cloud Jr. of Stokes Co., NC, who spent a number
of years in the Rogersville area before returning to NC.
As to that older Benjamin you refer to, Ron, who in the 1830
census of Claiborne Co., was pegged as 70-80 years old (therefore born
between 1760-1770), I propose that there's a good case to be made that he
was yet another brother of Capt. William, Capt. Joseph, Isaac, and Jason -
all of the Peter's Creek, NC/VA brood. I suggest that he was the same
Benjamin who was listed in at least two pre-Statehood records:
1789 - A petition was submitted to the North Carolina General Assembly by
"sundry inhabitants of the Western District, below Brown's Line." Included
among the signatories were Isaac Cloud, Jason Cloud, Joseph Cloude, Jeremiah
Cloud, Benj. Cloud, Tidence Lain (sic), and Tidence Lane. [North Carolina
State Archives, Raleigh. General Assembly Records, Box 1, Nov-Dec 1789,
Folder 18. In Tennessee Ancestors, Apr. 2004, p. 14 (Transcribed by Cherel

1790 -- On Hawkins County, TN., List of Voters (for representative for
Congress, western district of N. C.): Benj. Cloud, Isaac Cloud, Jason

Other records indicate that this Benjamin also had a son named Benjamin.
One of the questions yet to be answered (maybe it never will be) is whether
he too ended up in Claiborne to add to the Benjamin Muddle. Like crossword

I agree with you that 1) there were at least two Benjamin Franklin Clouds
born approximately the same time [about 1770]; 2) I also believe that your
Benjamin Franklin Cloud married Susannah Bondurant; 3) I also believe their son

Bouldin. 4) I also believe that the Benjamin Franklin Cloud b. 1826 married
to Nancy Middleton was the son of Greenberry Cloud.
As to whether Greenberry Cloud (married to Barthena) was the brother of
Benjamin Cloud (married to Susannah), I have my doubts. This Greenberry can first
be found in the 1820 Census of Lee County, VA and more closely connected with
the Lee County, VA Clouds as well as the Chadwells and then after that date is
found in Claiborne County, VA.
This is a new study for me but I want to line up all the Clouds in the census
[1810; 1820; 1830; & 1840] by name and age in that vicinity and see what the
entire picture looks like. There are several candidates such as Samual Sr.
and Jeremiah [the older members] are listed in the Claiborne Co. TN 1830 census.
It is interesting to note that there was another Benjamin Cloud a little
younger in Scott Co. VA in the 1830 Census.
I have heard a lot of stories about how Joseph Cloud "came over the mountain"
to Claiborne Co. TN but it should be noted that in 1830 he is still found in
the 1830 census of Hawkins Co. TN and if he was ever in Claiborne Co. TN he
was preceded by several other Clouds.
Let's keep looking. It is possible that earlier genealogists confused these
individuals and never took the actual ages into account. Of course, both
Benjamin Franklin Cloud's i.e. the one that married Susanna and the one that
married Mary Polly Chadwell could not have both been children of Captain William
Cloud since they were approximately the same age. The only reason I bought into
the idea that the Benjamin F. Cloud that married Mary Polly Chadwell was the
son of Captain William Cloud is that they can be traced back to the area
Captain William Cloud lived in VA.
As a final note, these Clouds must have been very fond of "The" Benjamin
Franklin. An interesting study is that of the "State of Franklin". I have seen
documents that showed that Walter Middleton the first husband of Mary Polly
Chadwell played a part in that story. Later, his son Walter Middleton Jr.
became the father of Nancy Middleton the wife of our other Benjamin Franklin Cloud
b. 1826 TN.

I agree that the Benjamin Cloud that married Sussanah must have died about
1842.
The Benjamin F. Cloud that married Mary Polly Chadwell died 14 Feb. 1845.
They are completely different individuals. If you take a look at the 1840
census of both Claiborne Co. TN and Lee Co. VA you will find three individuals
listed concurrently with the name Benjamin Cloud.
1840 Census of Claiborne Co. TN:
Benjamin F. Cloud 0-0-0-0-1 [20-30 years old or born 1810-1820]
Benjamin Cloud 0-0-2-1-0-0-0-0-1 [60-70 years old or born between 1770 and
1780]
1840 Census of Lee Co. VA:
Benjamin Cloud 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0 [ 70-80 years old or born between
1760-1770] You will find this Benjamin listed with the following Chadwells:
Pleasant; William; David; and Alexander....all a generation or two younger.
This Benjamin married Mary Polly Chadwell.
Now if you examine the Claiborne Co. TN 1830 Census you will find the
following:
Benjamin Cloud Sr. 0-0-0-0-2-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0 [ 60-70 years old or born
between 1760-1770] .....Low and behold we find another a just little bit younger:
Benjamin Cloud Jr. 2-2-2-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0 [50-60years old or born
1770-1780]
With regard to the "one other point": Widowed Sussanah can be found in both
the 1850 Census of Claiborne Co. TN Dwg. 23, Fam. 23 listed as Susan Cloud age
60 F. born TN; Leander Cloud age 27; Greenville Cloud age 26; Nancy O.Cloud
age 20; Louisa Cloud age 15; Oleny Cloud age 8, .... along with what are
probably married daughters and their children.
The 1860 Missouri Census lists B. F. Cloud Physician as the head of the
family but the family includes Sussana at age 71. I agree that Dr. Cloud was
probably the son of Susanna. By the way I remember that in one of either the Lee
County sources or the Claiborne sources there was a short write up on Dr.
Benjamin Cloud.
Dr. Benjamin Cloud however should not be confused with Benjamin Cloud b. 1826
that married Nancy Middleton. The doctor was born later about 1830-34.
See the following:

The Benjamin Cloud that married Nancy could not have been in two places at
once. I spent quite a lot of time researching the Benjamin Cloud that married
Nancy at the court house in Claiborne TN and Harlan County, TN. I made copies
of their marriage certificate that was in one of the old record books and
traced him every 10 years thereafter. Further, he did not go to Missouri but can
be found in Harlan Co. KY. Nancy's father was in Harlan Co. KY a little
earlier and I suppose that is why they went there. In addition, much more about
Benjamin and Nancy can be found in the pension application filed by Nancy.
The migration of this Cloud family can be determined by the census data:
After their marriage in 1850 the family lived in Claiborne County, Tennessee
until after Mary E. was born in 1857. They moved to Harlan County, Kentucky
until after the birth of Sarah in 1868. They moved to Rocky Station, Lee
County, Virginia and are found in the 1870 Census there. According to Nancy's
pension application they moved back to Harlan County, KY and lived there for the
remaining period of their lives.
It should be noted that Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Cloud enlisted in the
Confederate cause on 21 September 1862 and was paroled at Cumberlan Gap, 28 April,
1865. "Kentucky Confederate Pension #149 received 6-12-1912, Nancy residence
of Harlan County, Kentucky since 1870, Nancy b. 1827 Claiborne County, TN.
Service Co. G 27 VA Bat Cav; later 25 cav, served three years, "As far as she
knows"; Co surrendered at Appomatox, VA, Ref. say B.F. enlisted 21 Sept. 1862, Co
G, 25 cav, was paroled Cumberland Gap, 28 Apr. 1865. Husband died at Dezuryby
(Dezney), Harland County, Kentucky, she has not remarried, "Have you a
family?" "No". Gives William Cloud of Dezney, Kentucky as reference. Nancy signs
"X", Pen. allowed 3 June 1912. Wm Cloud, Adm. of Nancy Cloud, deceased, dated
12 Jan 1914, Harlan County, Kentucky. Copy of marriage cert. Claiborne
County, TN 12 May 1850" Found in Descendents of William Cloud, Note 636 Benjamin
Franklin Cloud, by Kenny Cloud generated by Ancestral Quest. From this record we
see that Nancy returned to Harlan County, Kentucky after 1870.
In the census data, on and after 1880, we find "Frank" with Nancy living
in Harlan County, Kentucky as follows:

US 1910 Census of Harlan County, Kentucky household # 80 lists family
without Benjamin Franklin Cloud b. 1826 as follows: Cloud, Nancy age 84; Wm M.
age 47; Frank age 32; Mary J. age 26 ; Henry age 17; Greenberry age 15;
Louisa age 10; Laura age 7; Pearl age 7; Saran age 5; Serepta age 4; Jessie age 3;
Alice age 3; Simon age 3. As you can see William is still at home with his
wife Jane, Frank (the grandson) is still living there with his wife Mary. James
(the grandson) has his own household #82 married to a Mary with two children,
Harrison and Jessie. James the son can also be found with his family #89
married to Jane Browning. Alexander (son) can be found in household # 75 married
to Nancy Jane Burhart. Every name index transcribed by Janette G. Nolan of
Harrison, Ohio.

I've seen several researchers connect Benjamin CLOUD who was married to
Matilda TUCKER and lived in Hancock County and Grainger County Tennesee
to Joseph CLOUD and Jane CARPENTER. Does anyone know what documentation
that is based on? Often, there is a considerable discrepancy between the
researcher's estimation of his birthdate and that indicated by census
entries.

I found a will for a Benjamin Cloud in Claiborne County, TN with Susanna
Cloud as wife. See the following:

"I Benjamin Cloud being sound and perfect mind and meory (sic) do make

Give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Susanna Cloud all my Estate both real

I am administrator of this list and several others. The use of CAPITOL letters in emails has always been a source of disruption on email lists of all types -- not just at rootsweb. For that reason, it is discouraged. It's not bad, it just causes problems. Blame it on the person who gets upset over something as simple as that, but it is still a problem for the list administrator who is trying to maintain decorum.
- People begin to unsubscribe when there is either upset on the list (like someone complaining or using being abusive) or when there is too much email traffic -- and especially when it is not on topic. (This particular thread is way off-topic and there are surely some people in our group who aren't interested and who do not want to hear about it.)
- Having people unsubscribe means less people to participate in the exchange of information and ideas about our family history.
... Were you writing just to me, I would never say anything about it. As administrator, however, I have to gauge the sentiment of the list and try to keep it productive.
There is no "rule" about the use of caps -- but there are suggested guidelines for "etiquette" for email forums, and all caps is one of the things that is universally discouraged.

If you are having a difficult time reading it:
a - get reading glasses (this is what I've done)
b - Most email clients have a menu item allowing changing the text size
c - position the mouse cursor over the text, hold down the control key and use the mouse thumbwheel to make the text larger or smaller (this doesn't work for all programs).
So, as list admin, can we move off of this topic?
Also -- if someone wants to write in all caps, don't let it bother you (of course, as admin, I can't know who is bothered and who isn't).
Last, but not least, if something is happening on the list you don't care for, let the administrator know -- off the list -- so he/she can try to correct it with as little upset as possible.

e-mail, or reading one, just hold down the Ctrl key and roll your mouse
wheel and you can enlarge or reduce the size of type you are seeing, without
changing the size of what is being sent to others.

Have enjoyed the banter back and forth this morning -- I am nearly 85 years
old and did not tackle the computer until I was 80 -- wonderful things happen
as a result of using it. I am a Cloud descendant having trouble tracking
back beyond my great great great grandfather William Cloud. He was in South
Carolina and then in Georgia and his descendants mostly ended up in Texas.
Wife was Sarah ---? Through DNA our line does not seem to match others being
