I am trying to find info on a Martha Cloud or McCloud who was born in England about 1890. She lived in West Virginia or possibly Kentucky & married a Lenard Miller (b 12-1889 in WVA & d about 1984 in Kermit WVA) They had several children one of whom was Fred Miller. I believe that Martha died in WVA as well. If any one knows of this line I would be eager to learn more

I recently found a letter in my mother's possession. The letter was from Amy Cloud to her relative, Mrs. Harry Brandenburg who lived at 919 N. 4th St., Arkansas City, Kansas in 1957. Amy wrote about her 3 sons: Ray Cloud born Feb. 3, 1943: Richard Cloud born Apr. 12, 1946; Marvin Cloud born Jan. 4, 1953. This family lived in New Pine Creek, OR. at that time. I am a third cousin to these brothers and hope to make contact with them as soon as possible. I can be e-mailed directly at: iamearthangel77(a)yahoo.com

I strongly recommend you not waste your money -- and I also suggest
you warn your kinfolks about them -- and encourage them to join

Your first clue should be the phrase

That means they've found our ancestors back to the time of Christ!!!
Go figure -- I didn't know they had surnames back then ??

Hi Ken,
Has been awhile, but wanted to check with you regarding submitting an
obituary of my grandfather as he passed as a result of a heart attack while
Hurricane Katrina passed through his home in Gulfport, MS. He was 91 years
old and I know you have him in your records as Walter J. Cloud, Jr. I am in
the process of writing his obituary, things are a bit disarray in Gulfport
right now, but want to publish it here in the Sacramento Bee and on your
site. Any tips on writing it? I'll forward it soon for the site. He was
a fan.
Thanks,
Kathy Cloud
Tom,
I've been "out of pocket" for a couple of days. I have logged on the sites
you have posted and get an almost instant page on my screen. The only
place where I experience a delay of a few seconds (less than a minute) is
in the "Other Features" section. That could be caused by the size of the
files linked in that section.

Living people are supposed to be masked -- their names
given as "Living".
I made the project members "not living", but made their
given names be their kit number.
Your kit number is 32731. Your record in that database is:

There have been several documents added to the Histories
page on the dna project.
Click on "What's New" to see all the new things or on
"Histories" to only see the History additions.
... also, let me know if you're having the same problem
with very sloooow response from the mykindred server.
The Histories:
- Kernion genealogy for R.E. Cloud
- letter of Daniel W. Cloud, dec'd at Alamo
- pension application of John Cloud, RS
- Pension application of William Cloud
- WW-I draft registrations for Clouds
Tom Cloud
Cousins,
The dna project results page is ready for viewing.
Check it out at

As usual, I am not happy with the way it is laid out.
Suggestions solicited.
Even if you are _not_ a member of the dna project, you can
submit Histories or genealogy data, etc. Just click on the

Harry,
I have been in the courthouse in Rogersville and in the Hawkins County
library, genealogy room. I have also surveyed the records in the Knox
County library McClung Collection and the UT Special Collections library.
I have not attempted to go through the Hawkins County Courthouse archived
records.
Here are some of my findings.
The McClung Collection has two collections relating to NC Land Grants. One
collection contains an index of grants listed by Tennessee counties and
includes the microfilm copies of the grants. The other collection contains
an index of NC Grants relating to Tennessee and includes microfilm copies
of the grants. A particular grant may be and almost always is listed in
both collections. As far as I know there hasn't been an attempt to collate
and compare the two collections. One microfilm collection contains North
Carolina Grant Books "A", "B" & "C". The Tennessee microfile collection
contains Hawkins County Land Grants, Books "A", "B" & "C". Irene M.
Griffey has transcribed what she calls "Earliest Tennessee Land Records and
Earliest Tennessee Land History." Her work includes all of the NC land
grants and transactions in Tennessee and covers multiple counties, i. e.
Sullivan, Washington, Hawkins, Green, etc. This is a monumental work
published by Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., Baltimore, MD (2000).
Billie R. McNamara has compiled, "Hawkins County, Tennessee Grant Books 1 &
2, 1787 - 1819."
John Armstrong surveyed most of the land grants in East Tennessee and his
entry books are in the McClung Collection. I have seen copies of his entry
books and they are very difficult to read. Irene Griffey has transcribed
Armstrong's Entry Books in two volumns, self published in 1993.
When you see a citation given as Hawkins County, Deed Books 1 - 8, those
are the WPA typewritten copies of the original Deed Books and these copies
contain many errors. Some of the typists never cleaned their type face and
they were probably the single finger hunt and peck sort of typists. I have
never determined the source for the Hawkins County, Tennessee Deed Books
"A", "B" and "C".

cites below give an indication of my problems. In most cases, I did not
see these records myself. They were collected from various sources, and I
dont know how careful the researchers were about their citations. Some
of them seem to be incomplete e.g., the 1791 (5 Sept) record cite
specifies op. cit. [referring back to the 1790 (2 Jan) record], but
the page number (35) is lower than that of the earlier record (77). So
that raises the question: is the 1791 deed actually recorded in Deed Book
3 rather than 2? The same thing applies to the last two in the list
the 10 June, 1793 record cite indicates op. cit. in reference to the
preceding one but, again, has a lower page number, raising the question as
to whether the later deed is really recorded in Book 4? Can you tell me
how many deed books we are dealing with during that 1790-1801 peri!

figure how where the actual data came from. And is the exact title of the
compilation as it appears in that 1791 cite or in the later one that
specifies Tennessee Records of Hawkins County, Deed Book No. 1, 1788

Cecil,
I've looked carefully at the page you referenced on Bruce's site.
What is it you see there that makes your thoughts turn to our
Jeremiah and his relation to the rest of the Cloud clan?
I looked for references to Georgia and/or Twiggs/Wilkerson/Wilkes
counties and saw nothing. ... well, not entirely true -- there is
a reference there ... "Nathaniel Folsom ... came with his parents from North Carolina to Georgia around 1774".
Is it the story of John Cloud marrying Cherokee Betsy Lacy?
Apparently John married Betsy about 1798 .... Bruce says their
eldest, William, was born that year. But recent FGS mailed to me
from Nata Oneal Cloud alleges that Jeremiah was born 1789. I don't
know where she got that birth date ?? (Jeremiah is her 2-g-grandfather).
I have always wondered but what we weren't closely related to
the Louisiana bunch (Bob & Pat Cloud, et al), but have nothing other
than a hunch. Perhaps one of John's siblings / half-siblings?
Did Jeremiah know about the death of Daniel at the Alamo? Did
he know they were related?
Maybe we ought to be looking into John's siblings for whom there
is no documentation -- maybe one that followed his brother John
into the Indian territory of Georgia and also married a Cherokee
girl. Your and my distinguished good looks may come from a
Cherokee ancestry (we sure don't want to look like Prince Charles).
Tom
P.S. -- It is becoming obvious to me that referring to the
area where John lived and where Jeremiah was born as Twiggs
county must have been common-place -- even 30 years before
it was formally called that. .... I am going to post a query
to the GATWIGGS forum about that. That would at least settle
our questions about where Jeremiah was born.

I am reading the Pension application of John Cloud, RS (1740-1840),
husband of Betsey Lacey.
... "In the year 1776 as this declarent believes he volunteered in the militia of South Carolina under General Williams. .... At this time he resided in what was then called Wilkes county, State of Georgia."
This is significant to Texas Jeremiah researchers because:
1 - Jeremiah Cloud's obituary says he was born in Twiggs county,
GA about 1784.
2 - Twiggs county had not yet been formed, that area being off-
limits to white settlers at that time.
3 - This is the only other Cloud I know of who has claimed to
be from that area, at about the same time -- John up to 1776
and Jeremiah being born there in 1784.
4 - John also had a son named Jeremiah (didn't they all??), born
about 1789.
The pension application continues:
...."In the same winter or early the next spring he enlisted ... for eighteen months. ... At the time he enlisted he belonged in the State of Georgia as before stated. ... He ... received a discharge ... he lived in his father's house in Georgia. When the house was burned by the Tories his discharge (as on support) was burned with it. He then belonged in Georgia, same county as before mentioned, but were all now from home into the Fort. During this tour he marched from Wilkes county, Georgia to the Cherokee Twons."
.... "The next tour he performed was in the Militia of Georgia, as a volunteer under General Clark. He marched fro South Carolina to Carr's Fort in Wilkes county, in Georgia. ... The next tour ... He marched during this tour from Wilkes county, in Georgia to Augusta ...?
... now this last (maybe) provides further clues.
5 - Twiggs county wasn't formed until 1809 (taken from the Creek cession of 1803). John Cloud claimed to have lived there in 1776 and before, 33 years prior to that!
6 - Twiggs county was first Wilkinson county (after the 1803 Creek cession).
7 - John refers to Wilkes county, but it was not called that until after 1777, being called St. Paul parish prior to that.

Joseph Stubbs was condemned on 1-10(Oct)-1785 for marrying out of unity in Wrightsborough. See Davis's work for more discussion on the matter. The children of Joseph and Zilpha are listed in the Wrightsborough MM, Ga. along with birth dates. Joseph is not listed and was probably born in Ohio. Abraham and Zilpha are listed and probably died prior to the date of the will. Rhoda was born in December 1802 which supports their move to Ohio in 1803.

More information is given than is found in Hinshaw's work. On 1st day of the 10th Mo. 1785 at Wrightsborough MM, Ga. is recorded the following entry: "Joseph Stubbs appeared here and offered a paper of acknowledgement for his Disorderly Marriage and also for having Carnal Knowledge of her that is now his wife before Marriage ..." Joseph and Zilpha had relation in 1783 in order for Mary Stubbs to be born in Jun 1784, a considerable time from the condemnation in 1785. Usually condemnation occurs as soon as the marriage is noted or the girl is noticeably pregnant. I do not have a civil marriage record but the Quaker entry indicates that a marriage took place probably in 1785. Also included are a couple of letters that indicate that Joseph was single in W!

The children are listed again at Stillwater MM, Ohio along with their birth dates and the death date of Abraham. There are differences in the dates for Rachel, Jacob, Deborah, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Zlpha, Eliza, and Rhoda. Joseph is listed for the first time. Rhoda is listed as being born on 3 Dec 1803. If the family moved to Ohio in 1803, then Rhoda was probably born in 1802 since she was listed in the Wrightsborough minutes. Since I believe Rhoda's birth is in error, I will go with the dates from Wrightsborough. Also listed are the marriages for Deborah to Robert Vernon on 6-11(Nov)-1811; Rebecca to John Patton on 27- 11(Nov)-1816; Eliza to Elijah Hanson on 26-8(Aug)-1818; Rhoda to James Vernon on 4-6(Jun)-1823; Isaac to Elizabeth Doudna along with three of their children; Sarah Hall (formerly Stubbs) was dismissed for marrying contrary to !

He gave to his sons as follows: Isaac, 40 acres, smith tools and $80; Jacob, a sorrel horse and to Jacob's children- land (he gave it to Jacob's children even though Jacob could live on it until his death); Iddo-land and a grey mare; Joseph-land and a grey horse; Zelpha was his wife and was allowed to live on the farm the rest of her life. This disagrees with a note in Hathaway's book (no. 13) that she died in Elkton in 1807. She is also listed in the 1820 census of Belmont County. Rebecca, Eliza and Rhoda each received a cow, bed and a kettle. Abraham and daughter Zilpha were not mentioned. Iddo, Joseph, Rebecca, Eliza and Rhoda were not !

Peter Cox, his step-father, was the buyer in both cases. Joseph was a witness on 17 May 1794 per BK A, p 383. He was a witness to Peter Cocks' purchase (I assume Cox) on 1 Oct 1790 per BK A, p387. Joseph was a witness on 23 Aug 1799 per BK C, p 9. Other Joseph Stubbs in 1809 and 1813 was probably the son of John and Esther Stubbs.

That would make us 5th cousins if I'm counting correctly. I got this email at work, but I'll check my research when I get home tonight and let you know what I have on Benjamin.

>Constance, they were closer than that. Isaac Drake of NJ moved to PA during the Rev. and enlisted under George Rogers Clark. He ended up in the Cincinatti area and lived for a number of years in Campbell CO, where he married Frances Monroe. He later moved to Howard CO, MO where he worked on the MO end of the Sante Fe Trail.

>My Drakes were just across the river in IN. Benjamin Drake, brother of my Jesse, had a daughter Nancy who married Joseph Nelson in either Campbell or Boone CO. Lots of Hoosiers crossed the river and married in KY, in either Campbell or Boone Counties.
>
>You're also in CLOUD Country. My 3rd great grandfather, Isaac Drake married Elizabeth Cloud in Boone County on Christmas Eve, 1834 (I think). Though bothweere from Rising Sun, Ohio CO, IN, there were a lot of Cloud families (including her grandparents) in Campbell CO and Boone and Kenton. Be careful when you walk though those cemeteries, my ancestors will be watching you.
