Subject: DEATH OF WALTER WHITLATCH
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, February 25, 1909
The announcement is made of the death of WALTER WHITLATCH, at his home in Columbia, on Monday morning. This will be hailed by genuine grief by his acquaintances and he was widely known -- few in either Marion or Lucas Counties were better known than he. He was a true nobleman in every sense of the word and met every obligation of life courageously and well, just in his contact with men, upright as a neighbor and citizen. He had been in declining health for months but was well advanced in age and had well accomplished his life-work. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Columbia, Feb. 23 -- WALTER WHITLATCH, an old and highly respected citizen of Marion County, died at his home, two miles east of Columbia, Monday morning, Feb. 22, 1909. For several years the deceased has been in declining health. One year was spent in southern California in hopes of a benefit, but for the past six months there has been a rapid decline, and all that loving hands and medical aid could do was of no avail.
Deceased was born in Indiana in 1834, resided in Marion County since 1843, and at the time of his death was aged 75 years, 1 month and 20 days. He was first married March 24, 1859. To this union were born six children. The mother and three children have preceded him to the Beyond. MRS. WILL MADDY died Oct. 15, 1887; GEO. WHITLATCH, Dec. 12, 1882, and MRS. W.O. CLOUD, June 11, 1901. Three remain to mourn the loss of a loving father: A.V. WHITLATCH of Belinda; MRS. J.N. MADDY, of Columbia, and MRS. ORA DAVIS, of Lafayette, Colo. Deceased was again married, Sept. 4, 1898, to MRS. GWENNIE LONG, who has been a faithful and devoted companion to him through all his declining years. Our community has lost a good man, an honest and upright neighbor, a friend to all mankind and one who will be greatly missed from our midst.
Funeral services were held at the home at 11 o'clock, Tuesday, Feb. 23, conducted by Rev. Smith, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Columbia Cemetery by the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member.
Tom,
My grandfather, Joe Cloud, kept a ledger during the first twenty years of
his marriage. He entered all of the items purchased during each year, the
date of purchase, the store were the purchase was made and the cost for
each item. Some of the items wouldn't be recognizable to the reader today
unless the person had a farming background. Many couldn't be purchased
today. He bought material and thread and my grandmother made the clothes
for the family. He bought leather and tacks and made shoes for the family.
Here is a sample:
Facinater - 50 cents. Some of the ladies might identify this item.
4 plough points - $1.05
Half soles - 25 cents
Coffee (fresh ground) - 25 cents
file - 10 cents
comb - 10 cents
4 yds flannel - $1.00
4 yds calico - 25 cents
1 buckhead - 55 cents
1 collar pad - 35 cents
1 pr overalls - 50 cents
4 sacks flour - $2.10
1 pr. hose - 10 cents
1 No. 2 Oliver plough - $9.00
1 pr hames - 50 cents
1 pr trace chains - 45 cents
1 backband - 15 cents
15 yds domestic - $1.00
5 gal. coal oil - 25 cents
1 box shells - 45 cents
He got extravagant in 1906 and bought 1 bottle of Brilliantine for 25
cents. That's hair dressing for you young whippersnappers. I go to
Walmart today and blow $25 just on shaving and hair supplies.
Tom,
Fasinating. I was able to make a copy, too.
It's difficult to relate to all that information, however, unless we can
find actual examples.
Just for general information, you may find this interesting from an
arrticulate cousin from way back:
He wrote in 1857 from Indiana, "...pork is worth $20 per pound; wheat is
only $1.00 corn 50 cts. per bu. oats 60. Coffee and sugar 15 cts per lb."
In 1864 he wrote: "....wheat is near $2 - corn 1. Corn meal $1.50
hogs gross 6 to 7 dollars. Beef cattle $5 gross for good quallity. Sheep 4
or 5, horses $150 - coffee 60 - sugar 35 ."
In 1876 from Colorado Territory, "Old potatoes are worth $3 per
bu.....Beef Steak here 10 to 15 cts per lb, flour 8 to 9 dollars per sack."
Subject: 1816 weather report
If you think our weather is messed up now, take a look at this.
1816 Presidential Election year: The Democrat-Republicans
nominated James Monroe of Virginia, with Daniel T. Tompkins of
New York as Vice President. The Federalists nominated Rufus
King of New York for the Presidency, but were split over Vice
Presidential candidates, then they lost the election.
Indiana obtained its statehood. Benjamin Harrison was
elected governor.
Elder Jacob Miller died. Barbara Miller, his widow, came to
the Four Mile, to the home of Philip Lybrook (son-in-law/
?brother).
The Year that had No Summer!
This was a very bad year, everywhere, but especially on the
frontier. A popular expression was: "1816 and froze to death!"
It got cold at night all summer and crops would not grow, There
was a killing frost at least once during every month. June 5
and 6, the temperature dropped to below 40, then on the 7th it
snowed. There were killing frosts all three nights. By June
11th, the corn was withered and dead in the field. It was
replanted, then in July the new stand was killed by another
killing frost. On August 20, the temperature again plunged and
any remaining crops were destroyed. Sept. 27 saw the start of
winter with another killing frost.
1816 (continued) WINTER.
That winter was one of the worst ever experienced. Snows
started early in October, and stayed on the ground until April.
The snows were two feet deep with a terrible ice crust on top.
Many survived only because the deer were trapped by the snows
and ice and could not escape the hunters. Following that
winter, deer were so scarce that they could not be depended on
as a source for meat, nor was the common deerskin britches and
jacket any more available. (The cause is identified as an
explosion that destroyed a volcano on the island of Tambora,
Java. The resulting dust cloud covered the earth and filtered
the light from the sun, and thus the heat that the earth
received.)
relation to Susan James, above), b. 1807 in Ohio, married in Maryland, died
in Nebraska.
From Nebraska the ensuing lines went to Missouri, then Colorado, then
California.
Most of the little bit of James research I have done focuses on the female
descendants, including my great grandmother Margaret Almira James, b. 1881
in Nodaway Co, Missouri, granddaughter of the Joseph D. James mentioned
above.
I also have a Thomas James who married a Mary Goodwin, b. about 1694,
married in 1712. I have no other info on this James, do not know if they
had any children. I believe at least some of the Goodwins came from Wales
and settled around Goshen, so possibly Thomas James was also from Wales.
I offer this info, sketchy as it is, in case you have any connections that
might mesh. I realize that DNA projects rely on the male Y chromosome, so I
am not much help.
Subject: More clues-DE/MD/PA/VA
Hi List, I will try and answer all of your e-mails welcoming me back to the
group and it is close to 30 of them so far.
1) Correction - yesterday- Eddie Cope's ancestor is Samuel Cope and not
Richard Cope and don't know why I listed Richard.
Joshua Cope listed 1782-1787 Frederick CO VA is a son of John Cope & Charity
Jefferis and grd-son of Oliver Cope of New Castle CO DE. Joshua Cope is shown on the Bradford, PA Monthly Meetings as going to Frederick CO VA 1775 and the Hopewell MMs show this as well. Joshua Cope is on the 1768 Nantmill, Chester CO PA tax list. His father and brothers' are on the 1768 East Bradford, Chester CO PA tax list and on this tax list is a Ezekiel BOGGS.
I still have not found out who the Michael COPE is listed on the 1768 Marple
twp, Chester CO PA tax list , listed as a Freeman and a John FERREE is listed and don't know if he is related to John Ferree who marr. Ruth Buffington 10 Apr 1736 dau. of Ruth COPE & Thomas Buffington .
Niell- info- On the Neill forum I found a listing for William Neill who marr. Mary Clinton in New Castle CO DE. I went to my books and found them listed in the Old Swede church records married 3 May 1750 and a Ezekiel BOGGS was Surety for this marriage. The Neills' believe this William Neill is a brother of John Neill and Lewis Neill of Frederick CO VA. The name of Archibald Clinton was listed and found his will 5 Sept 1746 London Brittian twp with dau. Mary Clinton.
The Boggs show immigrant James Boggs of New Castle CO DE died 1737 White Clay Creek . I have a ton of Boggs in my New Castle CO DE deed books.
One Ezekial Boggs lives in New Castle and found him on this deed-
16 Nov 1742 - Brandywine Hundred- John & Elizabeth FORD to Richard GRUBB-
Wit: Adam BUCKLEY and Ezekiel BOGGS- You know the Grubbs are on the tax list with Oliver Cope Brandywine Hundred and that Adam Buckley bought the land in New Castle 1729 from John and brother William COPE.
I typed Ezekiel Boggs on the Boggs forum and got 59 hits and his name is all
over this country including 1782-1785 Greenbrier CO VA and Georgia 1800s.
Question- who is Ezkeil Boggs and John Neal on the 1768 Bradford, PA tax list
with John Cope and sons Joseph, Samuel and Nathan Cope.
If you compare the 1768 Chester CO PA tax list with the 1768 Rowan CO NC tax
list you will see dozens of families with the same surname including COPE,
Linvill, Mendenhall, Buffington, Woodward, Thornbury/Thornborough,
Neal/Niell/Nail, Fraizer-
Note: I am charting a Alexander & Elizabeth FRAISER in Cecil CO MD North East River 12 Sept 1717 land to Henry WORLEY of Chester CO PA and land owned by Robert JONES who sold it to William FLOWER of Chichester, Chester CO PA and only surving son ENOCH FLOWER sold to Alexander Fraiser 12 Feb 1717.
Wit: ABR'M HOLLINGSWORTH- he Frederick CO VA later , Stephen HOLLINGSWORTH
and ANDREW JOB- Andrew JOB'S widow Elizabeth is on the 1722 East Nottingham tax list. Andrew JOB was a witness in 1695 of OLIVER COPE to Robert Pyle land in Birmingham.
Note: when I see Chichester twp listed and think of William Cope listed there 1729.
1715 Chichester , Chester CO PA tax list has Upper and Lower Chichester-
Hnery Worley is on the 1715 Chester Twp, Chester CO PA tax list with John
LINVIL and Thomas Baldwin husband of widow Mary LINVILLE.
The name of Alexander Frazier is on the 1715 Kennett , Chester CO PA tax
list.
Enoch Flower and Thomas LINVILL & wife Dinah Richards , James Whitaker & wife Mary Martin , Jeremiah CLOUD, Jeremiah Collett- this name is found in Cecil CO MD , William CHANDLER, Ruth Chandler BEZER ( Charity COPE'S Chandler family) are on the 1715 Upper-Chichester, Chester CO PA tax list.
JOB Family- Andrew JOB has 2 children that married into the Robert McCoy
family aka McKay and here he is in Cecil CO MD-19 July 1723 Cecil CO MD- Stephen HOLLINGSWORTH to Robert MAKEY/McKay/McCoy of Freehold, Monmouth CO. NJ 150 acres of land tract called Mount Pleasant.
Wit: Jonathan Curus- could be Curtis, John Segar and John Smith.- JP- M.V.
BABBER- this is Mathias Van Bebber from New Castle CO DE and Jacob & Fronica VanBebber are in the deeds for Cecil CO MD and he is the Ancestor of the VanBebber/VanBibbers' who married in to the Daniel Boone family.
Robert McCoy/McKay and Stephen Hollingsworth hold joint land in Cecil CO MD
and Robert McKay becomes VA land partner of Yost HITE .
Stephen Hollingsworth and Mathias VanBebber are Justice of the Peace in Cecil CO VA and Stephen is still found on Quaker records in VA Dau. Lydia
Hollingsworth marr. John Ross 11.10.1735 Hopewell Friends , Orange ( later Frederick ) CO VA. John Ross is listed son of Alexander Ross VA land partner of Morgan BRYAN.
Last Stephen Hollingsworth- listed son of Henry 1696/97 Brandywine Hundred,
New Castle CO DE .
Abraham PENNINGTON ( an Indian Trader ) is listed in the Cecil CO MD deeds
with the TEAQUES and Henry and Stephen HOLLINGSWORTH are on these deeds a JPs.
This Pennington & Teaque family are found in the Frederick CO VA deeds
1743-1750s and they are on the 1768 Rowan CO NC tax list that has mostly Quakers. I have 2 Pennington families now on the 1768 Rowan CO NC tax lists and the other I believe are from NJ.
Last- I rodered a book for NJ court records 1680 to 1707 and this should help me with the NJ families Iam working on.
