Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear cousins,
The dna project offers us a never before available opportunity
to find new directions for our research and to find answers
some of us have been seeking for decades.
Please take the project seriously and encourage every male Cloud
descendant you know to participate -- this includes people who
aren't on this email list or who don't receive the CFA Journal
(i.e. they don't know about it). (You can assure them there
will be no violation of their privacy or any release of any
personal information.)
If we don't get enough participants, then the useful information
will be limited. The more people who join, the more datapoints
we'll have and the more progress we'll make in knocking down
those brick walls in our research. There are now many successful
surname projects, and they got that way by having a large group
of participants.
If you know of someone that should be sent an invitation by mail,
please send their name and address to the dna project chairperson,
Raymond Shirley <rshirley(a)icx.net>.
sincerely,
Tom Cloud
P.S. If you are confident of your ancestry, we ESPECIALLY need
you to participate. We need your information as a reference point
to help those who cannot find a link to a line. The known lines
will provide the necessary "standards" for everyone else, and
you may well discover some new information about your own line.
Several male Clouds representing four branches of the family have ordered
their DNA test kits. This is a great beginning but we hope that every
branch of the Cloud family will be represented in the project. The test
result will be sent to each subscriber in about seven weeks. FamilyTreeDNA
will notify the two parties when genetic matches are found.

The Cloud Family Association has launched one of its most important
genealogical projects to date. Our goals are to:
(1) identify genetic matches among Cloud families living in various
locations in the USA and other countries,
(2) prove or disprove theories regarding Cloud ancestors,
(3) penetrate brick walls in our research and
(4) validate the research of various branches of the Cloud family.
You are not required to be a member of the Cloud Family Association to
participate in this project. It is open to all who have connection to the
Cloud surname.

Dear Cloud list members ...
I respond to the email below because I don't want anyone to be
alarmed by it and/or to think they are getting spammed through
the Cloud rootsweb email list.
**** That said, let me assure you -- and WARN YOU!
You CANNOT get a virus or other computer malfunction by participating
in a rootsweb forum -- because all email here is "text only".
You _CAN_ get a virus by following a link that may be sent to
this list. So BE CAREFUL about following links or opening
attachments (you cannot get attachments from rootsweb posts).
The purpose of this list is to share information about our
Cloud surname heritage and this email was inappropriate to
that purpose.
I assume this was a simple mistake or a spammer who forged an
email address.
Thank you for your indulgence.

Hi Harry Hogan:
I also have an ancestor named William Cloud from Fairfield Dist. SC. He
migrated to Madison Co., AL, and late in life, to Davidson Co., TN. In his will,
which was probated in TN shortly after his death and almost 50 years later in
AL, his 500 acres of rich fertile farm land was divided and recorded. The
apparent reason for the delay in AL, was that he willed his estate to his
grandchildren; so his adult children apparently agreed to stay on the properties where
they resided at his death. It was only after they died, that his grandchildren
requested the court to probate his will in AL.
So the land records for his property did not show up for all those 50 years.
And sometimes, the court appoints some lawyer friend to do the legal work, and
his name sometimes shows up in the property deed record indexes. Sometime the
local sheriff's name! I don't recall the exact details as regard the division
of the 500 acres of fertile farm land.
Best wishes.
Tom King, Sr.
I found some scant information in my files referring to William Cloud born
abt. 1770 Willow Glen Estates Fredricks? or Warren Co. VA died about 1832. He
was the son of William Cloud born 1745 and Jane Leah Jones. I am sure I have
more information on this person then this little piece of paper. All that I
see is received $10.00 from mothers estate. Who is he?

Is this the same William Cloud grandson of William Cloud and Alice Harden?
The son of Daniel Cloud? The William Cloud born abt. 1775 Fairfield Dist. SC.
Died 4 September 1846 Nashville Davidson Co. TN and buried 7 September 1846
Old City Cemetery Nashville Davidson Co. TN. I have spouse #2 Sarah and spouse
#3 Ann Davis. Is this who you are referring to? I think I may have gotten
some of this information from one of his descendants.

I found my sources. William Cloud, Sr. of Patrick County, VA appointed
William Cloud of Hawkins County, TN to be his attorney for him in all his
land affairs on the "Western Waters", state of Tennessee. The document was
signed by William Cloud Sr. on March 28, 1808. It was witnessed by Phillip
Penn and Thomas Whitlock. It was recorded during Patrick County, VA March
Court term, 1808.
Sources: Maud C. Clements, "The History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia"
and Patrick County, VA Deed Book 3, p 117.
I am still looking for my copy of William Cloud Sr.'s application for Rev.
pension.
I have researched Hawkins County, TN county and genealogy records. I have
found records of William Cloud selling tracts of land along the Holston
River, but none of the deeds of conveyance mention a power of attorney
being used. William Morgan Cloud may have used his power of attorney after
he moved to MO but I don't have a record of such use.

any help would be appreciated
Tom,
I haven't located my source yet but the following will explain how William
Cloud's land holdings could be disposed. He had given "power-of-attorney"
to his son, William Morgan Cloud.
Relationships of Stokes County, NC, Sullivan County, TN, Hawkins County,
TN, McMinn County, TN and Roane County, TN Cloud Families in Early 1800s.
William Cloud was living in the Salisbury District of Stokes County, NC in
1790. He was listed in the census as being between ages 16 and 45. There
was one other male over age 16, five males under age 16 and four females of
unknown age. If he was the same William who married Mary Elizabeth Morgan,
they had lived much of their lives in Patrick County, VA.
Joseph Cloud lived close by William in the Salisbury District of Stokes
County, NC in 1790. His age was also listed as being between ages 16 and
45. There was one other male over age 16, two males under 16 and six
females of unknown age.
William Cloud had left Stokes County, NC by 1800. He had come into
possession of 5,000 acres or more of land. In 1808, William gave power of
attorney to his son, William Morgan Cloud of Hawkins County, TN to
represent his interests in "all his land affairs on the Western Waters,
particular in a certain tract of land held by the heirs of Samuel Cummings,
being on Elk Creek in State of Tennessee, 5,000 acres, which land he claims
with just title to in part with my brother Isaac Cloud."
Land records for East Tennessee show that William, Isaac, Jason, Joseph
and Peter Cloud were entering large tracts of land in Sullivan, Green,
Hawkins and Davidson counties beginning as early as 1782.
William Morgan Cloud married Rebecca Mitchell around 1813. They raised
their family in Hawkins County, TN. They had fourteen children. The names
were Isaac, Benjamin, Joseph, John, George, Martin, Greenberry, William,
Nancy, Polly, Elizabeth, Samuel, a half sister unnamed and a half brother,
Washington.
Jeremiah Cloud, possibly a son of Joseph, was living in the Salisbury
District of Stokes County, NC at the time of the 1800 census. His age was
listed as between 16 and 26. He had married Elizabeth Martin, daughter of
John and _____ Martin.

Tom,
I have the record here somewhere in my five file boxes of documents. I
will dig it out as soon as I can. I have several large files in my
computer which contain data on William Clouds (plural) in TN. There were
several of them. There has also been much Internet discussion and
disagreement about which was which. Is it ok if I win zip some of these
files to your address without going through Rootsweb?

After the Rev., he had many interests in Tennessee and prob. spent some
time there, but as far as we know he never settled down there. His son
William Morgan Cloud, however, did live in Hawkins Co., TN, for a number of
decades before he moved farther west (to Missouri, I think). Capt. Cloud
(the dad) was noted for the number of his children, the last of whom he
sired during his last year living, at the age of 91/92. Harry

Carlol is right -- it was Bradley County, not Hamilton (which is next door)
that Jeremiah and Karen (Berry) Cloud lived in before heading westward.
