My research has found that African American Cloud family lived in Gaston county, NC, Rock Hill, SC and Surry County, NC as share croppers after being freed. I am the grand daughter of Nathaniel Cloud of Gastonia, NC he was married to Euzell Powell Cloud from Morganton, NC. Also found out that the Cloud, and Archie family are directly related. I've learned that I have family in SC wanting to get to know who they are. It's time to shake off the dust and find out the truth

Sharon,
I had long heard that the Cloud name came from McCleod (I used to
attend "The Gathering of the Clans / Highland Games" every year).
That is one reason I solicited the McCleod DNA Project to allow
our project to use their data for comparison. I've not updated
their data recently, but you can see the comparison from the
Cloud DNA Project pages ...
http://mykindred.com/cloud/dna/results/cloud-macleod.php
I believe your branches' participants are 33774 and 41880.
Without having the resolution of the 37-marker test, it will
be difficult for you to hone in on any particular line, but
kit 33774 is a 25-marker test. Looking at the McCleod data and
kit 33774, the smallest allele count I see is nine, and that is
with kit 32731 (Ken).
** please keep in mind that the counts you see on the pages I
made do NOT reflect what is called genetic distance. The actual
genetic distance is usually less than the difference count
and often considerably less because some markers move faster
than others and don't carry the "distance" weight of other
markers. For example, five of those nine allele counts are
from the red markers, which are given less significance and
sometimes aren't counted at all.
The Family Tree DNA Genetic Distance calculation shows a
distance of three for your kit 33774 and kit 32731.
In their FAQ, they say this about a distance of three for the
25-marker test: http://www.familytreedna.com/gdrules_25.html
"Probably Not Related"
"You share the same surname (or a variant) but are off by 3 'points' or 3 locations on the 25 markers tested. If enough time has passed it is possible that you and another distantly related family members' line each have had a mutation, or perhaps 2. The only way to prove that is to test additional family lines and find where the mutation took place. Expressed another way, assume your score puts you at 3 on the clock. Assume the person 3 from you is at the 9 position. Only by further testing can you find the person in between each of you...this in 'betweener' becomes essential for you to find, and in their absence the possibility of a match exists, but further evidence should be pursued."
It doesn't appear to me that your line is from any of the McCleods
currently listed. There is the possibility we will find the
"in-betweener" that will link your line to that of William Cloud
the immigrant ... or perhaps to an ancestor of his.
We just need more participants in our dna project.
Tom
Wow -- I wish this was true - wouldn't it be nice to wrap things up so
easily? Olive Ruth Nabors told me a long time ago it was full of errors.
I am sure of Elisha Cloud and his descendants (My grandmother Annie
Irene Cloud was his granddaughter) The family story is that we were
McClouds of McLeods originally from Scotland but trying to prove that is
a true challenge.
Thanks again to Tom and all the hard work he does trying to make sense
of all of our data!
Sharon McChrystal
Ken,
You and I both try to provide a "niche service". Neither of us
are researching other people's families, but we provide them a
place to display their data .... and not all of them do it in
the same way, some more careful than others. I am careful what
I accept and from whom, but I can only vouch for my own line.
But being able to see it all in one place, even with the warts it
may have is, in my humble estimation, of great value (at least
to myself and to many others I know of).
I have thought that "someday" I would actually write a genealogy
of my line and put it on the net. That way I could say that
somewhere there actually _IS_ a genealogy online. But until
that day, people need to know -- the data on the web, almost
all of it, is not a "genealogy" but rather just a compilation
of data -- just a big stack of electronic papers. Surely no
one is going to do a genealogy with data taken from a web site!
For those of us with brick walls -- we need to see all the data,
because we don't know where we fit in. It helps us get ideas
for where to start the real research.
thanks,
Tom Cloud

It appears that we are both working towards and uncommon end, and that is a shame. I dont really suppose that the CFA will ever make public the database they work from and because of that I have gone out on my own and kept the Cloudweb site going. Again I started looking for my own line, but ran into and was provided so much colateral info that I didn't want to just throw away, so as it became available, I examined it and if it seemed plausible added it to my data. I am sure there are many errors in my data, but if the error is there and someone can correct it, I feel the effort has been worth while. I really doubt that I will continue this for much longer, age and all that; so my real wonder is what will happen to it after I am gone. There so much valuable info there and !
I would hate for it just to go dormant and be lost and not available for researchers that follow. I guess time will tell what will become of it. My kids are not really interested, so I guess will give it all the CFA and let it just lay there. Enough of this. Just venting a little I guess.

Tom: I hope that I can help with the article “Early Families of Decatur
County” which was published in the “Post Searchlight” on May 19, 1976.
In all of my years of genealogical research, I have never been exposed
to such erroneous information. The article is not worthy of wrapping
fish and I hope that one day the article can be exposed for what it is
so that future generations will not be misled as I have been.
Eighteen years ago I sent a copy of the article to CFA in the fond hope
that I could be certified as a true descendant of a Revolutionary War
Soldier, Noah Cloud. All of the assertions in the article proved this to
be so. But, thanks to our CFA Historian, Janice Cloud, I was appraised
of the many discrepancies in the article and I have since proved to
myself that she was correct in her analysis of the assertions. Janice
was kind enough to send me a copy of her 1986 letter to the Corrections
Genealogist, NSDAR that addressed the many errors in the article. Janice
has given me permission to scan and post a copy of this 2- page letter
should there be an interest
Your web site for [mykindred.com] is FABULOUS, and I look forward to
learning more of the details which you have presented. This brings up a
question. Where can I see the sources for the information you present on
me [Ralph Byron “Rex” Sanders and my wife, Ruth Rosemarie Sager.]? If I
read the data correctly, you show me-and my wife as DECEASED. As of this
writing, we are both very much alive and I would like to correct the
information at your source. And, finally, your documentation references
to “Early Families of Decatur County” should be deleted. I was surprised
that you did not include a documentation reference to my research that
was published in the Cloud Family Journal, Volume XXIV, Nos. 3 & 4,
pages 61 thru 71. This research was devoted to Decatur County, Georgia
and Edgefield County, South Carolina. This research corrects most, but
not all, of the mistakes published in “Early Families of Decatur County.

Amen Tom,
It seems people are worried that Saying, or "Promoting" Christ, will
offend someone! It seems that NOONE wants to think that the ALL Out attacks
on Christianity is not OFFENDING The Christians or Others in America?
I guess it's OK to Offend the people that have Christian Beliefs?
Boy....Talking about being Radical!!
Today Secularism is the hot Religion. They say that Christians try to
push their Beliefs on other people! What do you think these people, the people
that are fighting to seperate everyone from religion are doing??? By not
wanting the 10 commandments posted or anything with Religion in School or songs,
THEY ARE PUSHING THEIR BELIEFS DOWN EVERYONE ELSES THROAT!!! Are they not
doing exactly what they're trying to stop us from doing? Pushing thier beliefs
down others's throat? By pushing the belief that Christianity should not be
taught, or Prayer shouldn't be allowed in certain places....etc...etc...
Where's the FREEDOM in that?
GOD Bless America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely; Rev. Rick F. Cloud
I think I've finally got a way for us to upload and share
our documents, histories (and pictures). This is different
from the myfamily site it two ways -- (1) no password or
membership is required to view anything and, more importantly,
(2) each item is linked to the person or persons it references
in the database.
From the entry page - http://mykindred.com/cloud/TX/ the
"Documents" link displays what is there at this point.
A nice feature is that the documents link to whoever is
referenced by the document -- and the document is referenced
from each of those individual's pages, making research much
easier. (All new items are also on the "What's New" link.)
I'm not too fond of the format -- all of the individuals being
listed in one column can make for a very large entry (e.g. for
Kernion's genealogy), but I can't think of a better way to do it.
Pictures/images are the same way -- any photo or other image
(not just pictures, but also pdf files and any image file) can
be referenced to any number of people and then that image will
have a link placed on those individual's page as well.
As most of you know, this is not "my" site, but it is the
combined efforts of many of us. If you will submit documents,
pictures and anything else you think useful, I will attempt to
get it on the web for all the cousins. .... I can also use
some help on some of this as it can be overwhelming trying to
do it all alone.
sincerely,
Tom Cloud
