Joseph Cloud (March 23, 1749/50 - October 05, 1851) and Martha "Patty"
Nettles (October 15, 1785 - April 30, 1852). Can anyone tell me who is

On a recent trip to Salt Lake I found the following
information.
Devizes (ST John the Baptist) Marriages from the
Wiltshire Parish Registers, by Phillimore and Sadler.
William CLOUD AND Elizabeth VIZARD, 16 Aug 1596
William Cloud 1621 - 1702 is reportedly from Devizes.
Is this marriage connected with him?

Hi... Your query was posted to the Cloud discussion group. I am not sure
what resources you have or what research you have done, but I checked the
ancestry.com census data. This is what I found:
1930 census for Washington Township, Stone County, MO; taken 5 Apr, page
234,
Joel B. Norman, first married at 18, current age 57, born MO, father born W.
VA, mother born: USA, prosecuting attorney for the county. Missouri C.,
wife, first married at age 20, current age 60, born: ARK, father: TN, mother:
MO; Ruth, daughter, age 22, born MO, bookkeeper in Post Office. They lived on
Court St, and in Galena Town.
1920 census for Washington Township, Stone County, MO; taken 3 Jan, page
257,
Joel B. Norman, age 48, born MO, father born VA, mother born: MO, occupation
listed as none. Missouri C., wife, age 50, born: ARK, father: TN, mother:
MO; Eva M., daughter, age 21, born MO, clerk in R. E. Office; Elton S., son,
age 18, born MO; George W., age 15, born MO; E. Ruth, daughter, age 12, born
MO. They lived in Galena Village
1910 census for Ponce de Leon Township, Stone County, MO; taken 5 Apr, page
269,
Joel B. Norman, age 39, married 21 years, born MO, father born VA, mother
born: MO, Lawyer, General Practice. M. C., wife, age 41, married 21 years, had
7 children, 6 children living, born: MO, father: USA, mother: USA; Edith,
daughter, age 16; Nell, daughter, age 14; Eva, daughter, age 11; Elton, son,
age 8; George W., age 6; Toola (??), daughter, age 2.
1900 census for Ponce de Leon Township, Stone County, MO; taken 23 Jun, page
259,
J. B. Norman, age 29, born May 1871, married 10 years, born MO, father born
VA, mother born: MO, farmer; Missouri, wife, age 41, born Dec 1969, married
10 years, had 4 children, 3 children living, born: MO, father: TN, mother:
MO; Edith, daughter, age 7, born Feb 1893; Nellie, daughter, age 4, born Jan
1896; Eva, daughter, age 1, Nov 1898.
Earlier census information is not easy to pinpoint. Let's take Joel...In
the 1910 census, there is on the same page as Joel, Thomas S. Norman (born in
VA), wife Alzora (would appear to not be the mother of Joel), # years of
present marriage 29. family # 50. Joel was family # 56. In the 1900 census,
family #277 is T. S. Norman (born in VA), wife listed as Francis (would appear to
be another name for Alzora since names of children are the same) Joel was
family # 286.
1880 census for Osceola Township, St Clair Cty, MO, taken 9 Jun, page 349
T.S. Norman, age 50, farmer, born Penn, parents place of birth blank. S.
E., wife, age 34, born IL, father born Penn, mother's place of birth blank; J.
A., son, age unclear (somewhere between 10 and 16), born MO; J. B., son, 8,
MO; R.E., daughter, 5, MO; T. F., son, 4, MO; C.B., daughter, 1, MO. [note:
if this is Joel's mother, she must have died within about a year after this
census and then Thomas married Alzora/Francis.] 1870 census for Osceola
Township, St Clair Cty, MO indicates Thomas is 30, born in VA, wife Sally, 24, born
in MO, son, Albert, age 2. Would appear to be the same family as the 1880
census (although, there is another Thomas Norman living in the same county,
unmarried, age 38, and born in Penn, and works as a carpenter).
As for your Missouri, I can't find anyone by that name or initial of M. C.
I see what appear to be 2 possibilities.
Possibility #1: In the 1900 census, there is a Sarah C. Cloud enumerated
on the same page as Joel and Missouri. She is widowed. She is family #280
while Joel and family are # 286. Sarah C. Cloud, 65, widowed, born Sep 1834 in
Tenn, had 11 children, 8 living. Children living with her are J. L.
widowed, age 43; Thomas H., age 25, Martha E., age 23; grandson, William E., 14. In
1910, she is on page 267 of Ponce De Leon (Joel and MIssouri are on page
269), age 73, living with her son Sherman H., widowed with two daughters. Sarah
is shown born in TN with parents born in VA. If Sherman should possibly be
the brother of Missouri, it is shown that both his parents were born in TN.
In the 1880 census I find who appears to be Sarah - Cass Township, Stone Cty,
MO (it is also shown they live in Galena P.O.). Joseph Cloud, 44, b: TN,
parents b: TN; Sarah, 43, b: TN, parents b: VA; Joseph, 22, MO; Wiley, 21, MO;
Martha, 16, MO; Grant, 12, MO; Sherman, 12, MO; Liza, 10, MO; George, 8, MO;
Tom, 6, MO; Martha, 3, MO. [note: yes, the census shows two Martha's. If
this is the parents of Missouri, it would probably mean that she is Liza.
Missouri may have been a nickname, since she was born in Missouri and appeared
to live her life there.] Assuming for a moment this is she, the 1870 census
would indicate that her name was Nancy L.
Possibility # 2: 1880 census, Benton Township, Newton Cty, MO. Alexander
C. Cloud, 53, b: TN, parents b: TN; Martha, 46, born: IL, father born: KY,
mother b: MO; Henry F., 20, MO; Ida Flora, 15, ARK; Thomas L., 12, MO; Mary C.,
10, MO; Martha W., 9, MO; Charles T., 6, MO; Maggie L., 4, MO. 1870 census
shows this family in Elk, McDonald Cty, MO. Basically the same info, Alex
born, TN, Martha b: IL, an additional brother, William, 12, born in MO, and
Henry, Thomas and Mary born in MO, with Ida born in ARK. I picked this as a
possibility because of the birthplace of the father, the current location being
in MO, and if Missouri is a nickname, her real name could be Mary and C is her
middle initial (Celia??).
Please note, I know nothing about this Cloud branch of the family. All I
know is what I found in the census in which I have tried to describe above.
Good luck on your search.

That Joseph Cloud was my ancestor. He was Captain Joseph Cloud married to
Polly Ukn. He led a company of mounted militia at the battle of King's
Mountain and Cowpens. He received several generous land grants from the
Governor of North Carolina following the War of Independence. One grant
was for 3,000 acres in Stokes County laying on the waters of Peter's Creek
and Snow Creek and Furies Fork. He was very active and involved in local
and state political affairs. He was a judge in local elections. He was a
Justice of the Peace and served on the bench of Stokes County Superior
Court. He was appointed a Commissioner to settle estate problems and
served as guardian of the interests of orphaned and illegitimate children.
He was the surveyor for Stokes County. He died in March, 1828.

Joe -- a couple of other points. Most of the records I have seen point to
Jane Carpenter as the wife of Joseph son of William. As for the "Nancy Jane
Moore" mentioned in the Chadwell book, the generally agreed-upon wife of
Joseph Cloud Sr.(1709-abt 1778), father of Captains Joseph and William
Cloud, was Nancy Moore (making her those boys' mother, of course, and the
grandmother of the Joseph you write about). I have never seen the "Jane"
before. Harry

Tom -- I feel pretty sure that this was the guy usually deisgnated Joseph
Cloud Jr., of the Peter's Creek family. He fought in the Rev. (King's
Mountain, for one battle) and is generally referred to as Capt. Cloud (acc.
to one source, "Major"). He was prob. married to Mary ("Polly") Lawson. A
surveyor as well as farmer, he was an early settler of the area that became
northeast Tennessee and helped to lay out Rogersville, county seat of
Hawkins Co., TN, as well as holding a number of other county offices. After
a period in Tenn, he returned to Stokes Co., where he lived until his death
in 1825. Harry

Thia could be the Joseph Cloud, son of Capt. Wm. Cloud
(Rev. War)
refer to: "Chadwell Heritage" by Myrtle W. Braun &
Sharon Chadwell Phillips 1973- Phillips Press.
1. Joseph was great-grandfather of Alexander Moore
Cloud. According to Alexander Joseph settled in Stokes
Co, NC. (according to "Chadwell" he married Nancy Jane
Moore. He came over the mountains to TN in the latter
part of the nineteeth century and settled on a large
tract of land including what is now Bean Station. He
had several children.
