Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Jeremiah Cloud born in 1784 in Twiggs Co. GA was a gggggg
ggrandfather. He died in Texas in 1861. His estate took 13 years to settle. Which child of his are you a descendant?
Dear Senior Joni,
I know it could seem daunting to try to join a genealogy list if you have not
done so before. However, it is actually quite easy.
First, do you know how to get into the internet part of your e-mail? If you
don't then contact the people who provide you with your e-mail service and
ask them for help. They should be able to explain that to you very quickly.
Then, type the following website address into the place where you put
internet addresses when you want to go to the web: http://rootsweb.com/
This will take you to the main "page" of the RootsWeb internet site. This
will be like a start-off place -- sort of like a Table of Contents in a book.
After the page opens up, scroll down the page until you can see a section
near the bottom left of the page which says "Mailing Lists." The first line
under it will say INDEX. If you put your mouse on that line and push the
left hand button twice - very quickly - a new page will come up.
This page is a good place to find all of the genealogy lists that rootsweb
has which could be useful to you if you want to use your computer to help you
work on your genealogy.
Look at the boxes that you will see on that page. One of them says SURNAMES
and has an alphabet in it. To register to be a member of the CLOUD family
list, put your mouse on the letter "C" in the SURNAMES box and click the left
button.
Your computer will give you a new page which has a list of all of the
RootsWeb family names that have a genealogy list. Just keep looking through
that list until you get to the CLOUD name. Put your mouse on that name and,
again, click the left button.
You will now have a page that gives you directions for joining the CLOUD
family list. It could be a little confusing to you the first time you look
at these directions. You can ask the RootsWeb people to register you in one
of two ways, both of which will let you see all of the messages that people
post to the CLOUD list. When you register for CLOUD-L, you will get each
message sent to the list as a separate e-mail message. When you register for
CLOUD-D, the computer will gather a group of messages sent to the list
together and it will send you all of them at once.
I like getting the messages one at a time so I can immediately delete the
messages that have nothing to do with my CLOUD family and leave the ones that
I think I want to answer in a message by itself, so I registered to get
messages from the list by registering for the CLOUD-L version of the list.
Other people don't want to get a lot of separate messages and would rather
read all of the CLOUD messages that arrived on the same day at once; they
registered for the CLOUD-D version of the list.
Once you decide whether you want to register for the CLOUD-L or the CLOUD-D
version of the list, then you can register to have the CLOUD family postings
sent to you.
On the page you got when you clicked on CLOUD, you will see a section that
says SUBSCRIBING. At the bottom of that section are (1) a line that says
CLOUD-L and (2) a line that says CLOUD-D. Put your mouse on the one you want
to register for and click the left hand mouse button.
This will take you to an e-mail message form that is addressed to CLOUD-L or
CLOUD-D, whichever one you chose.
In the place on the e-mail message form where you write in the subject of
your message, type in the word "subscribe". Then go to the place where you
write the message in your e-mail message form and type in the word
"subscribe" again. Don't write in anything else in either place -- just that
one word in both places.
Soon you will get a message from RootsWeb telling you that you have
registered for the CLOUD family list and you will start getting copies of all
of the messages that those of us who are researching the CLOUD family send to
the list.
It's very simple -- even for those of us who are seniors and who have not
started playing on a computer as soon as we started walking!
If you ever have problems with the CLOUD list, there is a person who is
assigned to help those of us who subscribe to the list. You will get to him
or her exactly the same way that you got to the RootsWeb page where you
registered to become a CLOUD list member. Just go through the same steps I
just described to you and you will find a place to click on which will give
you a blank e-mail message form already addressed to the list manager. You
can send him or her a private message that will not be posted on the list for
everyone to read to ask for help.
Also, if you decide that you don't want to be a member anymore, you go to
this page and you unsubscribe just the same way you subscribed -- except you
go to the section of the page that is for unsubscribing instead of
subcribing! And you type in the word "unsubscribe" in both the subject
heading section and the message section of your blank e-mail form.
I hope you decide that you will check us out for a while. There are a LOT of
us with Cloud family members in Philadelphia County, Bucks County, Delaware
County, Chester County, PA -- all around the Philadelphia area! Mine extend
from PA into New Castle County, Delaware. Since you are looking NJ, I guess
your CLOUDs went across the river! There are surely a goodly number of us
looking for Jersey CLOUDs, too!
Once you get registered, send us a simple summary of the CLOUDs you know are
in your family. Put in the heading something like: "Joshua CLOUD family from
Chester and Delaware Co, PA - abt. 1750"
That is one of my Cloud ancestors I am searching for. I know he lived in
Chester County until it split and became Chester and Delaware County and then
he was (obviously!) in Delaware County. I do know that I don't know his
exact birth date or death date. I know his wife Ann Mercer was born in 1759,
so I can make a good guess that is likely to come near to his birth date.
Putting this information into the heading helps the rest of us know right
away if we can help you out and vice versa.
Then in your message, put the rest of the information you know about your
family -- the spouse's name, the names of children, and as many dates and
places that you know.
When you have done that, then you will find that you will get better
responses from the list. If you just say that you are looking for Clouds
from the Philadelphia and New Jersey area, you are not likely to get too many
responses. There are surely THOUSANDS of Clouds from that area since most of
them come from lines that have been in that area since the 1680s and it takes
a lot of time for a person to write to tell you about his or her family when
you might not be related at all. Give the readers some good hints.

Now, while I'm in the advice-giving mood, if you have not yet found out about
Ken Cloud's website, you could find this website a great help to you. Ken
has spent years making a website into which he has put all of the information
that CLOUD ancestors from the 1680s CLOUDs that people have sent to him. You
can go to his webpages to see if anyone else has sent him information on your
ancestors.
Now, you must remember, that Ken and others do not guarantee the accuracy of
the information that is in Ken's webpages. He is simply serving as a
clearing house for information sent to him about the family. This, in fact,
can be very valuable. I found a long elusive ancestor in his pages. In
fact, though, this elusive ancestor of mine in Ken's pages was misplaced,
based on information sent to Ken by another of our family researchers. Ken's
information, even with the mistakes, however, gave me some great hints for
tracking down where my ancestor, and ultimately, figuring out a better place
for him in Ken's family tree (one of the hugest family trees you will ever
see!). Then, I sent the corrections to Ken along with my documentation
citations and he fixed the tree.
To get to Ken's website, go to: http://members.cox.net/kec/

Also, you will probably want to check out the CLOUD FAMILY ASSOCIATION. This
organization brings together Cloud family researchers from all over the
country. They meet annually to talk with each other about their research,
visit family locations, listen to expert genealogists who can help them find
their ancestors, etc. They also have a quarterly newsletter and other
resources available to members. You can get to their webpage by going to:

Senior Joni,
I hope you enjoy your time playing in the internet to help you find your
ancestors. It's not hard and once you've sent and received some messages and
have gone to webpages that can help you, you will wonder why you ever thought
it could be daunting or scary!

I am interested in the De/Pa Clouds and I am not finding anything that I
need.

Wylena, I am copying your not to both the Cloud and the Whittington

you've mentioned, but I'll bet there're people on both of those lists
that can.

Hi Debbie: We have lots and lots of Clouds up there where you are. I am in Florida, to far to be able to check other then on here. People are great.
Our David M. worked at Lewis Mills in Clifton Hts. We just can not connect him with any one earlier as no first name for his Father but know he married a Jane Jones, and Jane could be what they called her and could be anything, Mary Jane or Sara Jane. We have been searching for years. He lived in Swathmore when he died in 1898. Will look for your family also, funny if it is the same one<G>
Thank you Joni I appreciate the Look up

Joni,
I am so thrilled to find someone with Clouds in my neck of the woods.... Swathmore is just a hop skip and a jump from Morton and Rutledge PA, where I'm trying to find info on my great grandfather John Cloud, b. abt 1854 either in Chester Co PA or New Castle Co DE/PA. He was married to Anna Elizabeth Chandler. They had 6 children:
A. Harlan Cloud b. 25 Nov 1885
J. Davis Cloud b. 18 Nov 1886
William H. Cloud b. 13 Sept 1889
Hannah E. Cloud b. 11 Dec 1890
B. Franklin Cloud b. 28 Oct 189?
James Leonard Frederick Lewis Cloud b. 2 Dec 1894 (my grandfather)
I don't have my grandfather's date of death, so haven't been able to obtain his death certificate yet, so I'm still searching for his parents' names. Father may have been Nathan or Nathaniel? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Debbi
This is what I found in 3 census, 1820, 1830 and 1850 it gives you where
they are in the census. Did not have any match in the Ancestry World and
that is where you usually find other family members.
Don't know if it will help you.
