>Dear Friends,

>For twenty five years I have been researching many of the earliest families in America. The following are just a few of the names and places that appear in the book that is now being published and ready for distribution. This historical work documents the Scots-Irish migration From Jamestown to Texas. Along the way, the English, French and German migrations are also a major factor. From Yorktown to the Alamo our greatest heros seem to stem from the same group of initial families that arrived on the shores of America in the early 1600's. Below, I have a sketch of the primary families involved but there are many, many more mentioned in this work. I also have more than 2000 pages of notes which have been condensed to form the basis for the information put forth in the book. Ordering information can be found at my website: www.bettystrails.com or you may go direct to the bookstore at iuniverse.com. and order immediately. The title will appear on Barnes & Nobles, Books A!
Million and Amazon websites in 4-6 weeks.

The Central Texas Highland / Gathering of the Clans will be held
the second weekend in November -- Nov 8-10.
Please see notice below ..... and I hope you can make it.
I try to go every year .... it's a great outing for the family and
it's in a nice, small town so it's safe. There are lots of exhibits
and merchants and the Scottish church service, complete with bagpipes,
on Sunday morning is an interesting experience.

Margaret, et al
... Unfortunately, everyone who uses email or the internet has to
educate themselves a little to gain some measure of protection from
a small set of individuals who would do harm to your computer and its
data.
Please remember this:
- it is not possible to receive a virus from any of the rootsweb email
lists .... why? ..... because
(1) the messages are "text only" and
(2) no attachments are allowed
==============================
... "what's the difference in "text only" and whatever else ... and how
does that keep me from getting a virus ??"
.... a "virus" is just a bad program (executable) that somehow gets
permission to execute on your computer. You can have many viruses on
your computer and never have a problem -- as long as they are never
given permission to execute/run. To receive a virus (or worm, trojan
horse, etc) via email it must either come as an attachment (that you
have to then choose to execute by clicking on it) or as a set of "macro"
instructions that are imbedded in the message itself. "Plain text"
is the simplest form of message and can contain NO macro instruction.
So, by not allowing attachments and only allowing plain text, the
rootsweb system is assured of never transmitting a virus or other
computer program to you.
==============================
.... "What does "text only" mean in practical terms?"
.... "Text only" is the simplest form a message can take.
In technical terms, it's called ASCII-encoded text. Because of that
it cannot have any features like different fonts or sizes or colors.
The font, size and color you will see from this email I'm sending
right now will be determined by your settings on your computer --
I can have no control over it since this message is "text only".
==============================
.... "How can I know if I'm receiving or sending email that is
not "text only".
All email programs have an option that sets outgoing email
to be text-only (unless it's purposely overridden).
There is no way to tell for sure if you're receiving email
that is not text only -- except from the rootsweb email computers.
Anytime the text in a message is "non-standard", you can be
assured it is not text only -- i.e. if it has color or is a different
size or font or if there's an embedded picture or background color.
==============================
.... "What do macros add to email?"
... Macros allow the sender of email to be able to give
instructions to your computer as well as sending you a message.
This allows such things as text that moves or for the output of
a spreadsheet to automatically be incorporated into your emails.
This is a very powerful feature normally used only by programmers,
... or by people writing computer viruses.
==============================
... "so, why did I get a virus from a rootsweb email list?"
..... you didn't ! .... it just looks like you did!
..... the newer spate of virii have evolved to new levels
of chicanery ..... they now put fake "from" addresses in them so
that it's virtually impossible to trace where they came from. They
get these false addresses from your address book .... that is, from
your Outlook or Outlook Express address book.
==============================
==============================
... "How can I be assured I won't send anyone a virus?"
1 - Do what rootsweb does -- only send messages in plain text.
2 - Be sure your virus checker is up-to-date.
3 - Don't send any attachments you aren't certain are "clean".
4 - Don't use Outlook or Outlook Express -- don't even initialize
them (i.e. don't give them, or Internet Explorer, your email information
or use the address book that comes with them.)
... "How can I send email if I don't use Outlook, and why would it
be bad if it comes free (Outlook Express) with my operating system
and it's from Microsoft?"
.... Microsoft has developed a marvelous set of tools for the
computer -- including Internet Explorer and Outlook. Unfortunately,
the extra "power" they've included (macros) allows computer hacks to
do bad things. Also unfortunately, the security issues of these
products has not been addressed by Microsoft at the same pace as
the other features.
.... To send email without using Outlook, get one of the
other email packages (all of which are older and more mature than
Outlook) .... including Eudora (which I use) and Pegasus, to name
a few. Then, set the options for sending email to "text only".

I recently installed a new Norton Virus Program in my computer. It was a
good thing that I had done this. Recently my computer had been wiped out by
none other then the Klez worm. The virus shown was listed as Height.exe and
contained the klez worm. Dear friends out there please keep your virus
programs updated regularly. Mine is now updated daily. I lost all of my
Cloud Family Treemaker Program. But, I have always backed it up and kept a
hardcopy in my 3 ring binders.
