Wynette, I can't answer your question in re Martin Cloud, but can supply
the following data concerning Edith Vann, his wife:
John (The Gentle) Grant, b. ca 1500, m. Margaret Stewart. John and
Margaret had Duncan (b. 1527), m. Margaret Mackintosh; they had John Grant,
m. Lilias Murray; they had Sir Knight John Grant, b. 1596, m. Mary Ogilvie,
b. ca 1600; they had James Grant (Earl of Findlater), b. 1616, m. Mary
Stewart, b. 1605; they had Ludovic Grant, b. 1652 in Grant, Scotland. This
data is recorded in the Pedigree Ancestral File, version 4.10, The church
of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, Copyright 1987, dated July 1992.
Ludovic, in a sworn statement of 12 January 1756, recorded on page 301 of
the Charlestown, SC, Probate Court Book of 1754-1758, stated: "It is
thirty years since I went into the Cherokee Country where I have resided
ever since....I speak their language." He married a full blood Cherokee
woman of the Long Hair Clan (Elizabeth Coody). Their half-breed daughter,
Mary Grant, married William Emory, an Englishman. Their daughter, Mary
Emory, 1/4 Cherokee, married Rim Fawling, and Englishman. The Fawlings had
Nannie Fawling, 1/8 Cherokee, who married James Vann. The Vanns had
several children, among which was Edward Vann, apparently the father of the
Edith Vann who married Martin Cloud. This Edith Vann was named after
Edward's sister, Edith Vann Coody who married Archibald Arthur Coody, my
gggggrandfather.

Well, the scenario did not turn out as we had hoped, the surgery did not
take place. Once they got to the hospital, the surgery was cancelled since
the donor heart (though a perfect match) was found to be damaged by a
apparently undetected heart attack. So that was the bad news, but in
retrospect it was good news that the problem was found prior to beginning
surgery. Thanks for your prayers, we believe they had a bearing in the out
come of the evening. Further good luck when they missed deer by inches on
their drive home from Lincoln to Omaha.

Carol, thanks for the message, but I and many others believe Isaac Cloud
was the son of Isaac, the son of Joseph, the son of Joseph, the son of
William. I agree that the 1830 McMinn census was for our Isaac, but we
believe the succession is as follows:
William Cloud (1), b. 1621, Wiltshire, England; m. Susan James 1647; d.
Chester Co, PA. He came to the present State of Pennsylvania in 1682.
Five sons, William , Joseph (2), Jeremiah, John and Robert also migrated
about the same time.
Joseph (2), b. ca 1651, Calne, England; m. Mary Green Moore, widow of
Richard Moore, 1698; d. 1739 in Concord Township, VA. They had at least
four children: Isaac (3), Joseph (3), Ann and Mary. There seems no doubt
that a Joseph and an Isaac were operating in VA during the mid-1770's.
Isaac (3), b. ca 1695; d. 1752. He had no sons, but had a daughter,
Elizabeth, b. 1730, who married John Fuller Lane in 1746. This is the line
of Carol Williams Ledford, Rt. 1, Box 16, Leicester, NC, 28748.
Joseph (3), b. ??, d. 1770, m. (1) Elizabeth Osborn ca 1722, and (2) Hannah
Baldwin ca 1732. Joseph (3) had at least four sons:
William (4)
Joseph (4)
Jason (4)
Isaac (4) - this is my line and that of Raymond Hunt, 1400 Westway,
McAllen, TX 78501
A James Cloud and a Jeremiah Cloud also may have been brothers of
the four listed above.
Isaac (4) [b. before 1755; d. between 1820 and 1830) was counted in
Spartanburg, SC, in the 1790 census; however, he was probably near and may
have been in NC, for he was counted in Rutherford Co, NC in 1800, 1810 and
1820. He had, Ray Hunt believes, four or five sons: Isaac (5), Jesse,
John, Jeremiah and, probably, Joel (the 1820 census had Isaac Jr [5], Jesse
and Joel all listed at the same address).
Isaac (5), b ca 1787, m. (1) ??, (2) Joanna ??, had sons George, James
Madison (6), Benjamin, and perhaps Francis Marion. George, b. 1810, m.
Dorinda Archer in 1851, and settled along the Occee River in Polk Co, TN.
Benjamin, b. 1828 from wife (2) Joanna, was several years younger than
George and James Madison. Benjamin m. Eliza Jane Pearce in 1856 and d.
1895. They had ten children, and sometime between 1860 and 1880 moved from
Polk Co, TN to Henderson Co, IL. Family rumor also has a Francis Marion
Cloud as a son of Isaac who may have gone to Texas after the Civil War; if
so, he probably was an older son of Isaac's (5) first wife, and I have no
factual data to support any of this. James Madison was my gggrandfather.

While reviewing some old notes, I came across notes for the 1850 census for
McMinn Co., TN, showing Elizabeth Cloud, age 11, born in TN, living with
the family of Thomas Ballew, age 30. The listing for that address also
included several children with the last name of "Ricky". The listing
included some obvious errors, such as males listed as "f", so it may not be
too reliable.
Does anyone know who this Elizabeth was? I did not record the name of
Thomas Ballew's wife (dumb), but wonder if she could have been an older
sister of Elizabeth and both of them the daughters of Isaac Cloud and his
first wife?
Isaac (age 63) and his second wife, Joanna (age 48), were living with his
son George (age 40), "Diraner" (probably Dorinda Archer, George's wife, age
20), and Isaac's son Benjamin (age 18) in the 1850 census for Murray Co,
GA, as Family 40. Isaac was shown as b. in SC, Joanna in NC, George in TN,
Diraner in GA, and Benjamin in TN.
Isaac's other son, James Madison Cloud (age 33), his wife Margaret Drummond
King (age 30), and their children George W. (10), Marcus Lafayette (6),
Mary Jane (5), Seaborn Jefferson (3), and Susan 1) were in the 1850 census
for Murray Co., GA, living nearby as Family 44. James and Margaret were
shown as born in TN, and all of their children in GA.
Comment: Seaborn (the spelling was quite clear in this census record)
Jefferson Cloud (my father said the name was Samuel Jefferson, and he has
been shown on other censuses as Sefre, Sebren, and S. J. and in marriage
records as S. J.) was my ggrandfather.

Kathy B. King,
Yes, the Mary Elizabeth Cloud, b. 23 Dec 1814 is the daughter of Ezekiel
Cloud, Revolutionary War Veteran.
You probably know that Ezekiel Cloud had a sister named Mary who married
George Elliott, Jr. We find no record of this Mary having the middle name
Elizabeth.

Thanks for writing. I was really hoping that I could find information on a
Mary Elizabeth Cloud that was born (according to the LDS site) in 1787. I
think we must be talking about two different Mary Elizabeths. Is yours the
