This note specifically for Geraldine and my other cousins looking for
"our Jeremiah", but thought some of the rest might like this information
as well .... found at: http://www.almlc.com/~deeds/books.htm
Geraldine, et al .... the notes from Mary Lou said that Jeremiah
got 9 land grants in Georgia .... my problem with this is that
he was born ~1784, so it seems to me that it would have been his
father that got the grants, if any. What do you think? (The one
"Index to the Headright and Bounty Grants of Georgia" is interesting.)
... also, I can get books through the college -- let me know what you
want to see.

Tom Cloud <cloud(a)peaches.ph.utexas.edu>
I have posted information on the specifics of surveys for land
patents and grants at:
http://genweb.net/~cloud/TX/LandInfo/
This information comes from a BLM manual and gives such information as:
. the names of all states affected
. definitions of terms
. the locations of the meridian and base lines !!!!!
. examples of how the range / township / sections are laid out
. I've also included links to the BLM site for research into
the actual land grants -- and to their glossary.
Research into early land grants -- and where they were with respect
to other land holders -- can yield valuable clues in our family
history research.
I would be delighted to hear that this has benefitted you -- let
me know.

Dear Mickimouse,
Don't dispair if you get incorrect or confused information from the list.
There is certainly some misinformation in a family where a zillion family
members have the same first names! (For example, Ruth Buckingham is
purported to have married a William Cloud somewhere in the south -- NC, if I
remember correctly. However, I have documentation that Ruth Buckingham was
married to a William Cloud in Delaware. A lot of our Cloud cousins have
borrowed information from Ken Cloud's genealogy page which is a compilation
of any information that people have sent to him on the Clouds as they believe
it is true sometimes has information that is clearly incompatible. Still, it
is a good place to go for hints if you run into brick walls.)
You might try contacting your local genealogical society or local historical
society for some instruction on where the kinds of records you seek are
possibly going to be found. I found the Delaware organizations very helpful.
You also might find joining the Cloud Family Association a great boon to
your search. I found them completely invaluable and certainly worth the
annual dues.
Good luck,
Karen
MabelHi, I am new to the CLOUD-L and am very confused. I have been reviewing some of the old messages, and have gotten some help from there, but am unsure about a few things. If this is a repeat of old stuff, sorry, I'll try to catch up quickly.
What I would like to know is:
If Reuben Cloud and Caroline Whaley are the parents of Noah L. Cloud, who is Reuben's father? and where do I look for the proof?
Also, in the Will of Noah Cloud b. abt 1752, he gives a small sum to the heirs of Reuben, William and James. He does not mention his relation to them. Are they his brothers, sons or possible nephews?
Any help appreciated. Sincerely, Micki Burger
Here is my cloud line back to William, includes his son Jeremiah. All
Quakers all the way back.

Ah, Joe, your second from last statement is the kicker that has kept so many
people digging for so long. Until you have the missing links you've just got a

this in a book in my own library in a tome that my mother gave me a few years

Thanks so much.

Have any of you Georgia CLOUD researchers come across a record of the

Eliza was born in GA in 1818.

Thanks Tom. From your thoughtful list I may be gone a long time! I
certainly intend to take it with me. My goal is to tie Jeremiah in with a
William or Joseph at this time. It will not be the first time I have run
into a brick wall or realize that the facts just do not match. I feel that
since he was born in 1782 or close to that time he can be related to some of
the old lines that Pott's mentions. We will see.
Geraldine
Geraldine,
below my attempt to collect my thoughts and notes on places in GA and
SC to help you prepare for your trip. I think Edgefield may not be as
useful as we once thought -- the only clue we have that our family
was ever there was that one remark, almost an aside, in the
Youngblood-Armstrong book about the family of Jeremiah and son
H.G.W. Cloud being "formerly of SC". I suggest concentrating
on finding the church records of Georgia (see below) and looking
for the probate of the Clouds, Cobbs, Frizzels, and Sessions in
Barbour, Bullock, Montgomery and Pike Alabama. Also, though not
likely to do any more than satisfy our curiosity, it would be good
to see if there's any record of Jeremiah, H.G.W. and William J.
selling their land in GA and AL. (Obviously, it would be best
if you do not duplicate the efforts of others and thereby waste
your time -- that's why I recommend you get with Cecil and examine
the data compiled by Jim Cloud of Huntsville.)
Misc. Notes:
Edgefield didn't come into being until 1785 and hence there are no
records there before then.

Geraldine,
You are going to have a great time in Edgefield! Both the courthouse and the
Tompkins Library are located on the town square. I was luck enought to have
done research in the courthouse when one could still use the old deed books
and actually examine original probate packets. Now all is on microfilm.
I'm sure the Tompkins Library has all issues of the QUILL available for your
reading. The QUILL is published quarterly and is sent to all members of the
Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society, who also receive the SC State
Genealogical Society publication, THE CAROLINA HERALD AND NEWSLETTER.
(Mailing address: OEDGS, PO box 546, Edgefield, SC 29824-0546)
The OEDGS meets at various sites. The Tompkins Library has lots of
information that will be of interest to anyone who had ancestors who were in
the area. Ask for Mrs. Holtzlander. She did a great job for a family member
on some difficult Holston research.
The Caroliniana Library is part of the University of South Carolina and is
on campus. This facility specializes in genealogy. Sometimes one gets lucky
there- at other times there is nothing of interest. A word of caution-the
Andrea files sometimes lack adequate documentation and you may need to do
further research to support his claims.
Check the SC Archives as well as the Tompkins Library for church records. I
found a local guide to take me to cemetaries of interest because one can
easily get lost on rural SC country roads. I did not do a church records
search on the Clouds in either Fairfield or Edgefield Co. because I have the
Clouds on a back burner for the time being. I have some questions about how
closely affiliated my Clouds were with their Quaker heritage, but need to
work these speculations through before making any statement.
Re the "hysterical society" comments I made to Tom. I've recently had some
unpleasant encounters with folks who find it fun to put down southerners and
genealogists. I've found that when working in the deep south, most
archivists, librarians, and others (even dear little old ladies) are
exceedingly accomodating. However, if one starts disparaging them, it is
the kiss of death. One never knows who will read stuff on the net and what
conclusions they will draw.
More later.

Fergueson 1757; Geo Rayle 1787; John Nelson 1788; Joseph Perkins 1787,
