Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
According to the book "Chadwell Pioneers & Patriots", Alexander Moore Cloud gave
this version:
William Cloud b. 1715 New Castle DE, m Alice Hardin. The William you mentioned
was born 17 Sep 1750 Anson/Rowan NC. The second Wm married three times, #1 was
Adeline Martin, #2 was Elizabeth Mary Morgan and #3 was Nancy Vaughn.
Seed of Wm and Elizabeth totaled 11, the second oldest of which was Jeremiah
Cloud, the line I am tracing for my wife Daisy Cloud Farrell. If you need or
want more info let me know.

Carol,
The extent of the discussion of free webspace that I know about has been
the suggestion that such might be available. My experience is limited to
corporate servers, personal ISPs, and space donated to
community/charitable causes. I have also seen opportunities to give
material to a commercial enterprise to put on their web site, but that
is not too appealing to me.
What are the possibilities or where can we learn about them?

Bingo! Try this URL:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/lincoln/books/wagon/wag2star.txt
It sure looks like the same William CLOUD. Also, this William was the
subject of an article in the Cloud Family Journal (Vol. XIX No.2,
1996-1997, p42). Recent e-mails to the author of both, Thomas King Sr.,
have bounced; but, maybe it's just a matter of cleaning up his mailbox.
There are a number of decendents of this William CLOUD in Huntsville
(Madison County, AL), but none seem to be interested in genealogy. I ran
into several last month.
Let me know if this fits.

Hi!!
I *think* Rootsweb wil give a free webspace for the e-mail list - if not,
there are several "free webspace for genealogy" areas - (this may have
already been discussed and I missed it) -

Replying to my own message of last week (above), I will pass along what
my uncle Jim CLOUD tells me about the Jeremiah CLOUD shown in Madison
County (AL) in the 1816-1820 era. Jim says that he ran this down and
found that this was Jeremiah Huddleston CLOUD, a member of the CLOUD
Clan of Cloud's Cove (Madison County, AL) with William CLOUD, et al.
This Jeremiah CLOUD lived at Whitesburg (in Madison County on the
Tennessee River that is the boundary between Madison and Morgan
Counties) and then moved across the river into Morgan County, for which
he became Sheriff. He then migrated to MS. Jim says he will dig out the
records when he gets time (when he can tear himself away from the new
granddaughter).

Looking for information on William Cloud [1730 - 1811] of South Carolina and
Alice Hardin's son William. I think he is the William [b. 1750, d. 1842] who
married Elizabeth Morgan. Saw a will of William Cloud [married to Alice]
provided by someone on rootsweb and there is no reference to a son William.
Maybe he was the black sheep? Maybe he didn't exist. If not ,it's back to
more sleuthing. I have William [1750] as a son of William [1730] and born in
Rowan NC. Any help would be appreciated concerning this possible connection.
Ken,
I think it gets down to how important is this journey. This little
person does it because I feel that God made families for a very
important reason. They are the basis of society. Individuals are
important to God, witneess the number of names in the Bible that are
only there as identifiers, ie. A, the son of B, the son of C, the
faithful person who ... Because today's society is so mobile, it is
very easy to lose family identification in one or two generations. How
did my perverted set of genes get to be? World War I & II aren't just
stories in a text, those are my cousins - both sides. Same is true for
the Am. Revolution, War of 1812, Indian Wars, Texan-Mexican War and so
on. Yes, I have, or my husband has, relatives on both sides of the
named conflicts. But it is still more. It is building relationships
now. You all are an example. Many of you have sent messages of support
regarding our grandson, Nick. [scope test is March 6] That's family.
It is all part of the whole.
Bottom line, what would I be willing to do? I would be willing to
help merge data. I can do it here. I don't have to travel. You folks
who can drive can do leg work ...as you go. This DOES NOT HAVE TO BE AN
ONEROUS [look it up] TASK. This should be something we do simply
because we are. I like the team concept. It makes it workable. And
those who have an extra $$$ can share whatever they feel is appropriate
- no judging.
Well, so much for the soap box. I hope we can make it fly. Another
help along this line is the advertised capability of Family Tree Maker
4.4 to put a book on line. I can hardly wait for my upgrade to come in
so I can put the Hughes Family History on-line. Maybe all great minds
DO think alike!!!!!!!
Until tomorrow - may the CLOUDS comfort you,
may the breezes blow them your way;
may the mountain seem short in your journeys
may your home be with you every day.

Byron,
I think [Tom correct me if I'm wrong] that this list, affectionly [not
officially] know as the CCC started with Tom and Lura as they began
their search for Jeremiah. It is my understanding that it has grown
from there. I think of it as a subset of the Cloud Family Association
or CLOUD-L. Trying to find a mutually important fact before reporting
to the bigger group. I know I have inadvertantly included the CLOUD-L
on my list, so I have defeated myself.
Yes, I am a member of the Cloud Family Association, as are most of the
people on this list. Have I used their resources effectively? No. I
make excuses about writing snail mail letters. Even when I was strong
and could make it to the PO whenever, I didn't like writing. If I can
call or e-mail or fax, I use that resource. I am also a bit shy [Yes,
folks!] and sometimes I feel a bit overwhelmed by all the resources at
the CFA and so I don't ask. Stupid, I know. Something I would like to
see is a CFA website. The Association has done so much, I'm certain it
would be less hassle for Janice if information could be uploaded for us
computer junkies. I can't imagine how she handles the records just
using snail mail. [or do I misunderstand.]
I would certainly like feedback on this subject. I do NOT wish to
come across as some kind of snotty-nosed but-in-ski. Any and all
suggestions for better communication are welcome.

OOPS ! I made a boo-boo .... said Jeremiah came here 1835 (and
then quoted info saying he came here in 1837 or 1838 .... and
then I said it was Mexico when he came here .... dumb me! It became
the Lone Star State of Texias in 1836 and Jeremiah didn't arrive
here until a year of so later !

Ruth, et al .... have had no time to look at what Ruth has been
sending ... but did just now ....
"Our" Jeremiah was born 1782-6. His first child (that we know of)
was born 1810.
This means he could *NOT* be the one you refer to ... he'd have had
to marry his first wife when he was one year old!
But, the possibility of him having an earlier marriage doesn't
seem improbable, given that he was 24 to 28 years old when his
first child was born. A first marriage at 25 isn't unusual,
in my opinion, but then it seems there were more at 17 to 20.
If he was from an educated family -- or got an education himself,
I would opt for the older marriage date. And the fact that he
seems to have had quite a lot of personal property when he arrived
in TX in 1835 or so might also suggest an education ??
Thanks for your efforts, Ruth .... we are looking for a Jeremiah,
born 1782 to 1786. I have the following info on him in my database.
Much of it was obtained from Byron -- who may have gotten some
of it from Leonard or Ellen or Jim ???
"b. Twiggs Cty, GA (or Wilkes Cty??). The ages he gave on the 1850 and
1860 censuses from Austin County, TX indicate he was born in 1786 though
the year of 1784 is specified in his obituary. Moved from GA to Alabama
about 1816 and is listed on the 1830 Montgomery County Alabama census.
"He moved to the Republic of Texas about 1837 or 1838 with the Austin
Colony. In a newspaper interview, his granddaughter, Mary Rogers, at 95
years of age, said that he brought thirty slaves with him and was awarded
land for each child and each slave he brought.
"He acquired 155 acres of land in Austin County 4-26-1838 (deed #95) and
19 acres of land in Austin Cty 4-2-1838 (deed #117) from James Stephenson
in the James Stephenson Survey. He received one section (640 acres) of
"Headright" land from the Republic of Texas in Bosque Cty, Texas. This was
a third class grant for married men who arrived in the Republic after
10-1-1837.
There was a thread recently on either the Texahoma or the East Texas
Roots list about why a person would leave Georgia and come to Texas.
Going on memory here, but the offer of free land was a big incentive
as was the opportunity to flee creditors, since Texas didn't allow
garnishment of wages. Of course, this didn't apply to our Jeremiah,
since when he came here, it was Mexico and then was a separate nation.
However, the free land offer must have been a factor in his choosing
to come here -- or else, as I have wondered, he may not have been
a "Cloud" at all -- and he fled from some terrible deed or threat ??
There were many people who were "gone to Texas" that just disappeared.

Tom & the rest of the gang:
I didn't realize what all was in that last message! My hand must
have double-clicked or jerked at the wrong moment. I have tried not to
make them too long, if it can be helped. It's one of those Parkinson's
things! [a great excuse]. I promise to reread my messages from
beginning to end to watch for such things.
You commented on archiving past messages. I, too, try to save all my
messages, coming & going, so that I have the full conversation.
However, I batch save them to my hard drive after 20-30 messages. It
places them all in one text file. Later, when I can't be on-line
because my husband has to connect to his office, I use MS Word and go
through and clean out all graphics [that have become computer garbage in
text format] and most of each header. I keep the Date, To, From, and
Subject. I don't need the rest of that for posterity. Because I am on
several lists, I spend time cutting & pasting according to surname into
individual .doc files. For example, I have a file named Huz01_98.doc.
That means that file has all my Hughes related messages for the month of
January 1998. It can be time consuming if you let them pile up.
However, having them at your fingertips to remind you of what he-said
she-said is valuable to me. I also will not keep that story I sent
with my messages. If I had been the recipient, I would save it to a
seperate file, or delete it. I am also considering saving each person's
tree message to a separate file. I haven't decided ... either that, or
a file that I use to append lines to as they come. GEDCOM files go into
a separate Family Tree Maker file into which I am putting every one -
even if there is no connection at present. It makes it easier to see
which puzzle pieces we have and which are missing. It keeps me out of
the pokey.
If this sounds like a lot of space is needed, it really keeps it under
control. If you save a picture to a text file, it will give you 200-300
pages of computer garbage. I will download any pictures that are sent
as attachments when I read the original message. [I keep pictures in
separate folders, so I know where to look.] That way, I have no qualms
about deleting the garbage.
Also, I have discovered that if you do a CTRL-A [Select All] on a
text file immediately after saving it, and change the font from Times
Roman to either Courier New or Quick Type Mono, you accomplish two
things: saving several pages of space and retaining formatting. Those
two fonts are not relational. Each letter takes the same space whether
an 'o' or an 'i'. The kind you can use in Crossword puzzles.
Just some thoughts. Anyone else have suggestions?

Hello-
I'm a new list subscriber, looking on & finally got inspired to tell our
story. My Dad's cousins were from the Cloud family. Two of my Dad's ERWIN
uncles married two CLOUD SISTERS in Monticello, Drew Co. Arkansas. Long
story short - there are only 2 people still alive from one of the
Erwin-Cloud marriages, and my Dad's cousin (Homer Cloud Erwin) has asked me
for some information. I received a box of information from one of Homer's
sisters with all sorts of genealogy type information - it came to me
because I'm doing a lot of work on the ERWIN family. As it turned out -
there was "nil" on the Erwin family - but a lot on the Cloud family.
I am posting a little of what I know about them, because they were a very
interesting group and seemed to be very involved in a religious way /
ministers, etc. If you can put this family into the correct Cloud family
line, there is a lady in Bryan, TX who would like to know about it. I'm
corresponding with her to see if we can place this family because it is
filled with similar names as her Cloud family.

Hi all you CLOUD chasers!
I noticed my address given from the Cloud Family Journal and realized
that I need to make an update. My preferred address is now:
gkennedy(a)freenet.tlh.fl.us. This is where I check my mail regularly.
I'm searching for my Clouds in FL GA and AL. My GA born John Cloud m.
Catherine A.Daniels on 13 April 1865 in Jackson Co. Fl. Their son
William Charles (born 1866) is my ggrandfather. He married Callie Bell
Jones on 24 September 1894 in Jackson Co. FL. His son Milford Cloud is
my Grandfather(born in 1903). He married Nellie Ruth Brown in Panama
City, FL around 1926.
I think James Cloud and John Cloud are brothers but have no proof.
James was born in SC and John a few years later in Ga. I don't have my
info right in front of me. There are several Johns in Jackson Co. or
that boy was a "marrying fool." HA! Actually, there WERE several Johns
there, but the info is a little confusing about mine.
Can anyone out there help me figure this one out?

THE SMILE FACTORY
by Ruth Harris
[page numbers are at the bottom of each page]
Once upon a time there was a boy name Nick. Even though his mommy
and daddy and friends all loved him, Nick was sad. [I drew a sad smiley
face with red hair and a big gloppy tear spilling out of his left eye,]
-page 1-
His mommy walked in the room. Something was wrong. He didn't look
right. She stopped and looked again. No, she was right! NICK'S SMILE
WAS MISSING! [I have a clip art pic of a little person who is frightened
- hair all on end, both feet off of the floor, hands on both ears, and
mouth a big O.] -page 2-
If the sun is shining, [PrintShop pic of smiley-face sun w/sunglasses
pushed up on forehead.] and your puppy's tail is wagging [PrintShop pic
of a beagle on a rock pearing over the edge at a fish in the pond below
and his tail is wagging], and you his a homerun while playing ball [PS
pic of young boy swinging a bat], and you are sad something is very
wrong! -page 3-
Mommy and Daddy took Nick to the circus [PS pic of lion tamer in
center ring] [sad face], but Nick was sad. - page 4-
His mommy drew him a funny picture [PS pic of child's drawing of
sailboat w/ breeze and sun] [sad face], but Nick was sad. -page 5-
His favorite dinosaur tried to make him smile [PS pic of dinosaur
hugging boy]. But Nick was sad [sad face]. -page 6-
SO Nick's mommy put her hands on her hips, stomped her foot and
said, "Nick, we are going to call the Smile Factory!" The Smile Factory
was a place that helped people's smiles to work again. All the helpers
at the Smile Factory loved Jesus who had made the smiles in the first
place. So Mommy called. [PS pic of lady on phone.] -page 7-
The Smile Factory told Mommy to get out the Imagination Hat and
Glasses that she kept for emergencies and a pair of glasses for Nick.
[Using PS pix, Loud word balloon having a palm hat and leapord glasses
in it with the words For Emergency Use Only. Across the top is a
headline in left pennant form - Imagination Hat & Glasses] [sad face]
Nick wasn't sure. He still did not smile but he thought about it.
Mommy's hat and glasses looked so funny. -page 8-
First, Mommy had him imagine that he was flying to Imagination
Land. So Nick imagined a plane. Mommy said it had to be a Happy
Plane. She handed Nick an Imagination Pencil to draw a smile on the
plane. [PS pic of yellow place w/smile] But Nick didn't smile. You
see, it was a [headline SECRET! in red outlined in black] He had
decided NOT to smile. No matter what. Mommy was making it hard not to
smile. [sad face] -page 9
Mommy's eyes twinkled, a sure sign that it was going to be hard to
not smile. First a dimple appeared on the corner of her mouth. Soon
another dimple appeared on the other corner. Slowly, a GREAT BIG GRIN
CREPT ACROSS HER FACE. [photo of our daughter with PS palm hat and
leopard glasses applied] [sad face with PS faux nose, mustache and
glasses]. Nick wasn't sure how long he could hold out. -page 10-
Mommy opened her eyes and said, "Nick, imagine Grandpa wearing BRIGHT
RED running shoes and jogging in the park." [PS pic of jogger w/ red
shoes] [sad face w/ nose] But Nick was sad. -page 11-
Mommy's eyes twinkled even brighter. She said, "Now I want you to
imagine you are in outer space! [PS graphic of boy in spacesuit riding a
pencil like a rocket in outer space] -page 12-
You get to see the earth with its brown deserts, and green forests,
and blue oceans, and white, fluffy clouds floating on top. Just
imagine. God made all that!" [PS pic of earth] [sad face] It wasn't
fair! Nick almost smiled. But he was just able to hide it. This was
getting tough. -page 13-
Now Mommy was grinning. She said, "Imagine they let Grandma play
football at The Stadium." [PS pic of line of burly football players]
Nick burst out laughing. And he laughed, and he laughed, and he
laughed. He laughed so hard his sides hurt. [Photo of our grandson,
Nick] -page 14-
That night, just before he climbed into bed, Nick got on his knees
and prayed, "Thank you, God, for a mommy and daddy who like to see me
smile. Thank you for keeping us safe all day and all night. Thank you
for Jesus and for loving me. Amen" -page 15-
That night, Nick cuddled under his covers and smiled. He knew he was
loved he HAD to smile. [PS pic of bed with happy face on headboard
floating in the night sky] "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good."
Psalm 107:1 -page 16-
THE END
Word of Life Tinker Tales
Hi, Everybody!
Thank you so much for your notes of encouragement regarding our
grandson. The news today is that he will have to have more blood work
to determine blood loss and a scopocotmy. They will put him to sleep
and look in his intestine, count polyps and take samples to determine if
any are cancerous. Having been through this war myself, I know what he
is in for. There's no avoiding it, but you just wish it didn't have to
happen. I appreciate the passage from John 14. God is always
faithful. The rest of us ... Moving along!
Mary commented that Al was her brother, that they shared research and
hoped that he would reply. Mary, Al did reply, and he said that he has
something on the Jeremiah in question, it will be a matter of digging
through the papers. So give him a little room. We appeciate all
offers.
Ellen made the following statement [I'm cutting and pasting]:
"Yes, John Clark Cloud and mary Griffin were married in Montgomery Co AL
in Jan 1836 and I have a copy of that. In census reports they were both
born in GA. He born about 1815 and she about 1818. Her father was John
W Griffin and he came to TX at the same time. I hve Original Land Grant
Certificates for Jeremiah and John C Cloud and for John W Griffin
issued in 1839 stating they had been citizens of Texas since 1836. I
have 2 folders full of research. Even though I am not a member of the
LDS Church I work one day a week in the local Family History Center and
have for the past 7 years, and I consider myelf an experienced
genealogist. Not an expert, but I have done a lot of genealogy for
myself and for others. (Friends only). And I do enjoy it greatly. I
like meeting others on the internet and exchanging ideas and
formation. I am looking forward to hearing from you again.
Ellen"
Thank you so much, Ellen! Because of the size of your files, I
recommend that anyone wishing information, contact you personally and
ask for specific info. Maybe we need to create a web site with chat
capability. I'll talk to Allen [my honey!] because he is a junior
webmaster at ATT. It certainly would facilitate things!
I actually spent time this morning doing something else ... on the
computer of course. I just finished a little story for our grandson.
I have graphics in it, so I'll just describe the pix and make a text
file for y'all. I'm a little proud right now. [See here, Mommy! See
what I did! See! See!] You are free to share wherever you want. I'll
send it separately.
By the way, if you are going to share info concerning research, please
do a cc: to everyone. That way I don't have to cut and paste because
everyone will be up on the conversation.!

Thanks for all the info!
This particular message includes an assumption that initially prompted
me to want to offer a lesson in Alabama geography, but then I recognized
that this assumption may be a viable hypothesis worth pursuing.
Regarding geography, it doesn't seem likely that Jeremiah would go
westward from Georgia to Montgomery County by way of Madison County,
which is 200 miles to the north. Thus, I have assumed that this was
another Jeremiah CLOUD who was probably kin to the William CLOUD
(1775VA/NC/SC-1846TN) who reportedly obtained land in Madison County
(AL) in about 1824 as well as property in nearby TN.
However, chronology could support the GA->Madison(AL)->Montgomery(AL)
assumption more than geography since part of Madison County was being
settled well before Montgomery County. The first state capitol was
Huntsville (Madison County); later it was moved to Montgomery in the
central part of the state. It's worth looking into.
My line is pretty well defined by Tom Cloud's posting, which covers the
span from Jeremiah at:

Al,
Thank you for that correction, and for uploading your line onto the
CLOUD-L list [hint, hint to those who have not done so!] I had just
turned to the next issue of the Journal, and saw that what I had typed
was incorrect, but this address is still different. How does the tag
Cloud Cyber Citizens grab you!? You know, the CCC of the 21st Century!
Just as a matter of curiosity, do you have anything on this Jeremiah
Cloud, b. in GA abt 1784 [6?]; moved to AL and was listed on the 1816
census of Madison Co., AL; the 1830 census of Montgomery Co., Al; and
moved to TX abt 1837-8. This is info I received from Lura. He married
a lady named Elizabeth ____. Settled in Austin Co., TX. D. March 14,
1861. Do you have any clues whatever?

Surely, Jeremiah Cloud 1794-1865, or whatever, wasn't created in the

I'm typing in the e-mail addresses that I have found advertised in the
