[CLOUD-L] Stokes County, NC 1810 census
by Raymond A. Shirley, Sr.
Brian, Thomas Gaines is listed on pg. 121, ln.#8, Peters Creek District.
Thomas W. Gaines and his wife, Susannah Dabney (Strother) Gaines both
died in 1811 in Stokes County, NC. They were the parents of William
Dabney Gaines b. February 28, 1774, in VA. William Dabney Gaines
married Nancy CLOUD b. January 17, 1777, daughter of Joseph and Polly
CLOUD. Wm. Dabney and Nancy were married on January 1, 1797, in Stokes
County, NC. The bondsman for Wm. D. Gaines marriage to Nancy CLOUD was
a George CLOUD, probably Nancy's brother.
In 1749, land speculators Joseph CLOUD, John Dawson, and James Terry,
acting in partnership, obtained leave from the VA. Land Office to "take
up" 12,000 acres in what is now Patrick County, VA. Polly CLOUD died
May 22, 1793, according to Russell/Gaines Bible information found in
Barbara Gonce Clepper's RAULSTON/RUSSELL GENEALOGY.
At the time of the 1810 census in Stokes County, NC., Wm D. and Nancy
(CLOUD) Gaines were living just across the state line in Patrick County,
VA., where Nancy's father, Joseph CLOUD. had purchased land on CLOUD'S
CREEK in 1755.
Wm. Dabney Gaines inherited wealth upon the death of his parents who
died within a week of each other in 1811. William and Nancy soon
migrated first to East TN and later to Jackson County, AL.
Their children were:
Malinda A. Gaines, b. Dec. 22, 1797, in VA., m. William J.
Price. Both are buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery.
Susan Strother Gaines, b. July 18, 1800, in NC., m. Alexander
McFarlane. Both are buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery.
Paulina Gaines, b. Sept. 22, 1801, in VA., m. James Russell.
Both are buried in Doran's Cove Cemetery, Jackson County, AL.
Frances M. (Fanny) Gaines, b. May 27, 1804, in VA., m. Wm. M.
King. Both are buried in the King family plot in Kingsville
Cemetery, Johnson Co., MO.
William D. Gaines is listed as the first member on the roll of Rocky
Springs Church of Christ, Jackson County, AL. Nancy is listed as member
number three. Member number two is their son-in-law, Wm. J. Price, and
member number four is their daughter, Malinda.
George W. CLOUD is on the church roll as member number 16 and his wife,
Nancy (NEW) CLOUD is member number 18. George W. CLOUD is listed as a
Bishop of the church.
William Dabney GAINES, Nancy (CLOUD) GAINES, George W. CLOUD, and Nancy
(NEW) CLOUD are buried together in a group in the Rocky Springs
Cemetery.
My conclusion from all of this: The George CLOUD listed on pg. 122 of
the Stokes County, NC., 1810 census was the same George who was bondsman
for the marriage of Wm. D. GAINES and Nancy CLOUD. He was also probably
the brother of Nancy, making both of them children of Joseph and Polly
CLOUD. Our George W. CLOUD was probably the son of first George and
nephew of Nancy. He could be that one male under ten listed under
George CLOUD in the 1810 census.
Happy New Year.
