Looks like I found this board at just the right time! I'm just starting to follow this line am looking for all the guidance I can get.
My great-great grandmother was Malinda CLOTHIER who married John Wesley HIRST in 1864-5. I've heard that Malinda and John had nine children, although I've gathered direct information on:
Frances Ann HIRST (b 10 Sep 1871)
Myron HIRST (b 13 Jun 1876)
Mary HIRST (b13 Jun 1876)
John E HIRST (b 22 Apr 1879
Lettie M HIRST (b Nov 1881)
Addie M HIRST (b Jul 1884)
My great-grandfather, Howard Jackson MATHENA (b 10 Sep 1871, d 06 May 1918), married two of the HIRST daughters. He first married Frances Ann (07 Feb 1888 in Blair, Nebraska), who died shortly after giving birth to their daughter, Frances Ann MATHENA.
In 1892, he next married Mary HIRST, from whom I am descended.
Howard Jackson MATHENA and Mary HIRST had four children:
i. Bessie Mabel MATHENA (b 19 Aug 1893, d 01 Jul 1966), married Alfred Armfield JOHNSON 20 Aug 1913 in Missouri Valley, Iowa
ii. Arthur Edwin MATHENA (b 24 Jul 1896, d 28 Jul 1976), married Anna Sara HARRINGTON 15 Jun 1916 Missouri Valley, Iowa
iii. Ruth MATHENA (b 11 Oct 1902, d Bet. 1998 - 1999), married Ammon ESSIG
ix. Elsie Fern MATHENA (b 12 Oct 1904, d 01 Jul 1967) married Guy REYNOLDS
Bessie Mabel MATHENA and Alfred Armfield JOHNSON had two children.
i. Living JOHNSON
ii. Lester Eugene JOHNSON
Lester was my father.
I have seen reference to a book written by Rodger Shelman that presents his findings on this direct line. I'm trying to reach him but haven't yet made contact. If anyone is in contact with him, would you please put a bug in his ear?
Looking forward to meeting all my Clothier cousins!
Paula

Hi All
I am new to this list and just starting the CLOTHIER name.
The CLOTHIER'S I am interested in came from the County of Somerset, UK. - There are MANY CLOTHIERS in this area.
Would love to share information with anyone interested in the following names, or anyone who has CLOTHIER'S from Somerset.
I am particularly looking for the marriage of JOHN CLOTHIER to ELIZABETH HOCKEY ~1850
I have birth certificate for THOMAS CLOTHIER, 4/8/1856, Alhampton, nr Ditcheat, Somerset, UK, which shows the above JOHN & ELIZABETH CLOTHIER as parents.
THOMAS CLOTHIER subsequently m. ANNA HODGES (Reg Jun Q 1876, Shepton Mallet) and I have Thomas and Anna on the 1881 and 1891 census, still in Alhampton - he was a farmer.
I also have a JOHN & ELIZA CLOTHIER on the 1851 census, Tinney's Lane, Alhampton Street, Ditcheat, whom I believe to be THOMAS' parents. This JOHN CLOTHIER was a Thatcher.
I believe Elizabeth was JOHN'S second wife.
26/10/1828 John Clothier m. Mary Flagg - (from Ditcheat parish records)
Best wishes
