Dear Lorraine and Cindy,
We are definitely from the same Clothiers.....Susannah Thomas Curtis (later
married William Ratliff in 1759) first married Nathaniel Curtis (in 1745),
and I am descended from their son, Samuel Curtis, who moved to Tennessee, and
then to Marengo County, Alabama. Susannah's mother, Susannah Clother (b.
Circa 1700) was married to Thomas Thomas, II (b. circa 1700) about 1725, and
Susannah's sister Mary, married Thomas's brother, Stephen Thomas. Her
parents were Robert Clothier, b. circa 1665, d. between 1699/1717, and Jane
Kemp b. 1687 and married just before or around 1700. She married Thomas
Eubank after Robert died, and then married her daughter's father in law ,
Tristrum Thomas, after the death of her second husband. ( I think the Kemps
were Quakers and Susannah and Thomas attended the Friends Meeting House, so I
don't know if the Thomases were Quakers or he attended because she was) I
think she died around 1745. Robert's parents were Lewis Clothier, b. around
1640 and he married Susannah Knapp, whose parents were Robert Knapp (who
emigrated to MD in 1658 with Susannah) and Elizabeth, I don't have any more
information farther than that on that line. On the Kemp line, I have Henry
as Robert's father, b. Jan. 15th, 1609 in Kirkby Fleetham, England, who
married an Elizabeth and his father was Robert Kemp b. in England who married
Margery Newer. This information has not been fully documented by me, so I am
not sure it is correct. Do you all have any other information on them, or
do you have more accurate information than this??? I joined Colonial Dames on
the Thomas Line, so I know that information is correct, as I have documented
that. One other thing... I have listed as Jane Kemp's mother, Ellizabeth
Webbb. circa 1657 in Talbot County, and her father as Edmond Webb who married
Elizabeth. There sure were a lot of Elizabeths on these lines if it is
correct!
Please let me know if you all have more information, and if I've left
something out...
Thanks,
Cathy
Am researching William Ratliff (1724) married to SusannahThomas Curtis (1722). Susannah's parents were: Thomas Thomas and Susannah Clothier. In my family I have a Robert Clothier Ratcliff. Could your Clothier family be related to the Ratcliff family?
