Hello Cathy,
I think we are related way, way back!! Clothier is my direct line on my
mother's side.
Lewis Clothier b. about 1640 came to America in 1666 from England. He
married Susanna Knapp. They had Robert who married Jane Kemp. Their son
Lewis is my ancestor. They were Quakers in Talbott Co, Md. I have the Kemps
back to Yorkshire, England. That's it briefly-------am trying to get my
information better organized.

This letter to Mr. Locke, presumably of Wisconsin is written on old letterhead
stationery with scribble lines through the printing:
Coat of arms THE SENATE
STATE OF MICHIGAN, LANSING Eleventh District
Committee on BRUCE F.CLOTHIER Agriculture,Chairman
4989 Peck Rd
Finance & Appropriations
North Branch
Now the handwritten letter
North Branch,
July 3 - '63
Dear Mr. Locke,
Rec'd your letter forwarded me from Marlette Chamber of Commerce. Am always
interested in learning more of the Clothier family as there are many scattered
there out in the U.S. - I am a retired farmer now living in North Branch
village and within 10 miles of the old Clothier farm that was established
shortly before the civil war. We have a copy of the Bill of Sale from the
Govt. and signed by Abraham Lincoln. There was a church and a school in this
locality named after the Clothiers, and also a Clothier cemetery where
Grandfather and many of my relatives are buried. The original stock came from
Somerset Shire Eng. near Bristol, and originally were in the clothing business.
I had a son who was there last summer and had him do some checking. There are
many of them still there, and with his conversation with the present mayor of
Bristol he was told he need not be ashamed of the family as one member was a
former mayor of Bristol. Also some were lay ministers. Our son also drove
through Somerset and and visited with several. Said they were substantial
citizens and could be recognised as Clothiers. I have our old family Bible and
quite a lot of "Info" if I learn what you want and what is your connection.
Please excuse the varied stationery as I had several outside activities other
than the farm, especially in later years some am getting rid of some excess
writing material. I am now 75 years of age, go to Bradixton Fla(?????) each
winter, and the good wife and myself have a family of 6 and also 20
grandchildren - the children are our chief assets and we are happy. Started
playing golf after retiring at 70 yrs. After farming I thought it a crazy game,
but get quite a thrill out of it now playing with the family. Do you happen to
know my good friend Wm Merriam from Jamesville Wis, who is a member of the
State Assembly? Would be glad to have you come over and call on us. We go south
about Dec.1st. You probably are a relation or you wouldn't be enquiring. The
reason I'm known around Marlette is that I graduated from A8(?) there around
1909 and also at the present time am only about 12 miles away. Let me hear from
you Sincerely Bruce F. Clothier.
Discussion: And that's the end of the Clothier letters. The '63 is obviously
1963. We looked up the U.S.Social Security Records and found a Bruce Clothier
(F.T.M. CD #110) SS # 372-24-6052Issued in Michigan Birth date 29/12/1887
Death August 1974 Residence Code MichiganZip code of last known residence
48461. Primary location associated with this zip code North Branch, Michigan.
I would say he is a brother to William and Frank - one of those six boys
William mentions when describing his father's family.

Dear cousin it will soon be a year since I received your kind and welcome
letter but I am sorry to say I did not answer it at the time layed it away and
did not find it for a long time, in fact my wife found it this day. My family
consists of three boys and one daughter she has been living with her husband in
Missouri about eleven hundred miles distant from home she and her husband came
back to Michigan last August and have been living with us nearly ever since.
They have no family. We have two other boys living almost in sight of our
house. They both are married and have families of their own. The eldest, Millar
has three little girls the oldest one about six years of age. Earl the next boy
has three children, one boy and two girls, the youngest girl is about 3 months
old. Our youngest boy is fourteen years old and remains at home. We are all
very well except my wife who has been ailing for some time. We have had a
delightful winter thus far, not much snow and quite moderate, so much different
from last winter which was very cold and stormy. We had a cold and wet summer.
But still the crops was very good and no reason to complain. Now in regard to
my parents, they are both dead. Mother died about twenty-six years ago this
last January. My father died four years ago last November, he was eighty-four
years old when he died. One consolation they were both Christians. How is it
with you dear Cousin are you a Christian and enjoying the religion of Jesus
Christ in your heart, if not do not put it off any longer. Christ says now is
the accepted time, while we have health and strength, the older we get the
harder it seems to become subject for the Knights of Heaven but I trust you
have already given your heart to the Lord, your young family needs a Christian
mother's care. Now in regard to our dear cousin Fred Clothier he died about 6
years ago, and I have not heard very much news from them since. I have often
thought about writing to his wife but have neglected to do so. We have a photo
of his family and the wives of the two oldest boys. Their names are as follows
beginning at the eldest. Ernest Alfred Sydney Anna Frank and Ethel the youngest
girl Annie has since married. Now in regard to those older people you mentioned
they were our cousin Fred's parents (Uncle Hugh and wife) the two small
children by their side were Fred's sister's children, she died leaving those
two small children with their grandparents (our Uncle Hugh and wife). Do you
ever hear from our relatives in South Africa? Uncle Tom is dead but have not
heard from them since my father died. Dear Cousin let us hear from you again
soon, from your loving cousin William and Emily Clothier.

Glad some of you enjoyed letter No. 1. I have a couple more; if you're
interested, let me know. I don't want to bore everyone on the list - but then,
maybe if I do post them all, someone somewhere will find something they can
use.

No.2.Copy:some of this letter is missing.
Marlette 5th November, 1901
Mrs.F.E. Greenhalgh Ballina. NSW. Australia.
Dear Cousin,
Sometime ago I received a letter from you, as stated in your letter I was
somewhat surprised to know I had a cousin in that part of the country, but if I
remember rightly cousin Fred in England mentioned something about receiving a
letter from a cousin in Australia one of Aunt Melina's daughters, but I had
almost forgotten it till I received your kind and welcome letter. My father is
still living nearby, he is 77 years old the second of October, he is quite well
only considerably stooped. Mother died about 13 years ago at the age of 60. My
fathers family consists of 6 boys and 2 daughters, the youngest unmarried and
living with him at present. We are all living near each other and all own farms
except my youngest brother F.A.Clothier who lives in Montana in the Western
Part of the United States, he is a school teacher but now is attending college
in Bozeman Montana he expects to graduate this coming winter. Brother Frank
lost his wife soon after he went out there leaving no children so you see he's
now single again and no family to care for.. My family consists of 3 boys and
one daughter named after your mother, Edna Melina. Our eldest son Millar is 24
years old, Lena as we call her is 22, Earl our next is 19 and Hugh the youngest
is 3 years old in May last. Dear Cousin in regard to our relatives in South
Africa, we have two uncles in that country with quite large families, as I have
not written to them personally I know but little about them. Father heard from
them 2 or 3 years ago but for some reason or other they stopped corresponding.
The last we heard from there his youngest brother Tom has become demented in
the mind and had to be placed in an asylum, he visited England sometime before
he lost his mind. Cousin Fred Clothier of Yeovil England could perhaps give you
more information regarding them than I could. The other brother's name in South
Africa is Absolem................."this letter is unsigned indicating there
could be more of it somewhere".
Discussion: This letter is clearly from William as you will see by matching up
the children and dates in his next letter dated 1913. Unfortunately he doesn't
mention his father's name. I believe the father of them all (Melina's father)
was John.

Copy of a letter to Mrs. F.E. Greenhalgh - nee Ellen Colley (Melina Clothier's
daughter) of Ballina NSW.
The Avenue
Yeovil.
December 27th 1899
Write again.
Dear Cousin,
I received your letter on Xmas morning and it came as a pleasant surprise.
Yes I had wondered many times how you were all getting on and if your father
was still living. Your mother was the only daughter of the family and the
youngest child. I remember well when they left Stoke their native place to
emigrate to Australia. I was then about 13. That is now over 40 years ago. My
father whose name was Hugh died suddenly on Xmas day 1898 a year ago now just
as he had finished his Xmas dinner age 78 and had been an invalid for 16 years
or more he also had a recent wife in his old age who was weak in her head and
is now in the asylum that like your fathers was an unfortunate marriage. You
have an uncle for all I know of in America who has a grown up family his wife
is dead and his eldest daughter is now his housekeeper. The family are doing
fairly well. I have corresponded with his eldest son for the last 14 years. We
also had 2 uncles in South Africa. One of them Uncle Tom came home about 4
years since and stayed with my father about 9 months and went into the hospital
for his eyes, after he returned he buried his second wife with whom he had 4
sons. It seems he was not happy with his second wife for they had a separation
and when he returned from England he found her at his house ill and she died in
his arms. He was a peculiar old man and you can imagine how my father was
surprised when he turned up one morning after an absence of more than 40 years
and said I am your brother Tom. I have heard since from one of my cousins a
daughter of Uncle Absalem that they had to put him in an institution in
Pietermaritzberg. I would like him here now the war is on if he was as well as
he was when he left us, he was very fond of my wife and family and spent a good
time at our house. Respecting myself I have a family of 6 three of whom are
married. I have 4 sons and two daughters the youngest a daughter of 14, we have
had them all home to spend Xmas save my married daughter who is with her
husband's friends in another part of the country. We have only one grandchild.
I only had one sister who died some eleven years since leaving 4 children, her
husband died some 2 years previous. I had to look after them and see them right
to get their living. Three of them are now married and have homes of their own.
I have been in business as a xxxx manufacturer for 11 years have one of my sons
with me. So now my dear cousin my space is gone and I was very pleased to have
tidings of you, how many of your brothers and sisters are living? I hope they
are all doing well remember me to them. My dear wife and family all join in
very kindest love to you and accept the same from your affectionate cousin
F. Clothier
Discussion:
xxxx this word is not clear - could be glove or flue or something else. Reading
between the lines of this and the next letter it looks like the original family
before emigration was William's father who went to America, Tom & Absolem to
South Africa, Hugh who stayed in England and Melin(e)a who came to Australia. -
could have been more - I haven't looked on the net am only going by the info I
have in the letters as yet. Stan told me the family came from Wisconsin - maybe
he meant the Colleys. I looks like "Mr. Locke" in another letter
must have lived in Wisconsin because the writer asks if he knows
somebody there.

I am reasearching Samuel Clothier, born Castle Cary, Somerset, England 1825. He married Mary Ann (or just Ann) Rose in Hermitage Bay, New Foundland 1847. Their first son Edward was born there, their next two sons were born back in Castle Cary and the rest were born in New Zealand.
The Clothier Family I have traced but our Mary Ann is a mystery, hopefully someone can give us some clues.
Mary Clothier
New Zealand
Ambrose CLOTHIER (b. 1738 in Cornwall, CT) married Mary or Mercy MAY (b. 1740 in Cornwall, CT) and they had eight children, one of whom was Mary Clothier (b. 1768).
Mary Clothier married Benjamin Jordan and they lived in New York (Saratoga and Essex Counties). Mary and Benjamin had three children: William, Lucinias, and Lucinia. Lucinia married H. Strong.
I feel that Lucinia is my gr gr grandmother who married Henry Strong, but have not been able to prove it.
Is there anyone who is working this line who might be able to help me.
I will gladly share info.

Cathy,
My Mullett/Clothier family were also Quakers. I noticed that there were several
Clothiers in Canada when I checked the 1871 census in Ontario. I am not yet
sure how they got here or if they connect as I do not know any of Mary's
siblings names. I am waiting for some more information to come with possibly
some correspondence between the families here in Canada and England.
Let me know when you get your records out and we'll see if there seems to be a
connection.

And how nice to be given such a warm welcome, by you and the other Clothier
list person who wrote with much the same message. I take it there aren't too
many of us on the list. Almost all of the other lists I've joined have welcomed
me with one of those nasty "v-word" attachments!
It looks like your Clothiers were in USA long before my Melina's generation,
but there might be a connection further back. Do you know what part of England
they originated from? I believe some of Melina's brothers went to US as well as
some to South Africa. Somewhere I have some copies of very old letters
mentioning this. I'll dig them out and see if I can find any relevant
information one of these days.

Kathy

Frances,
The families may be connected further back, but my Mary Clothier was born in
the early 1700's (Susannah was born in 1700) in Talbot Co, Maryland. My
records are packed, but they may have been from Somerset, England. Having the
same names, it's possible they were cousins. They were Quakers here at that
time, but I don't know their affiliation in England.
Cathy
Hello,
I am in the process of verifying the information I have on my Clothier line.
I have Mary Clothier who was born 3 Jul 1774 in Somerset England. Her father was
James III Clothier and unknown mother. I have further lines if this sounds at all
familiar.
Mary married William Mullet in 1795 Somerset England. They left England for
Canada in 1821. They settled in Upper Canada. They had 13 Children between 1796
and 1823.
Frances Scully
How nice to finally see a Clothier list inquiry.... I meant to reply
earlier, but was hoping to look at my files, but right now they are packed
and out of reach. So, going on memory, my ancestor is Susannah Clother b. in
Talbot Co, MD in 1700 and married Thomas Thomas. Her sister, Mary Clothier,
married Thomas's brother, Stephen Thomas. They were Quakers, I believe.
Her father was Robert Clother, and the Kemp and Knapp family tie in.. I have
information back several generations, but at the moment cannot get to it
(Will be unpacked in a few days). If anyone is related to this family, will
you email me and we can compare notes? thanks...
Cathy
Dear Kathy
I am afraid I am unable to help you with your Clothier family. My Clothier family is from the London area. I know there is a large family of Clothiers in the Somerset area but I do not know if they are related.
My husband is descended from William Clothier, pawnbroker, b. 1783 Greenwich, Kent. He married Elizabeth and they had Rebecca b. 1805 London, William b. 1807, John Thomas b. 1809, Joseph Lockyer b. 1811, Thomas Jenkins b. 1814 & James Jenkin Clothier b. 1816 all born Deptford St Pauls Kent
Best wishes with your research.
JENNY CLARK
I am a great granddaughter of Melina CLOTHIER, born 1832 in
Stoke-sub-Hamdon,Somerset, daughter of John and Mary. Melina had several older
brothers, two of whom went to South Africa. One of those brothers was called
Absalom. Melina married James Colley about 1852 and migrated to Australia in
1856. Is there a connection with anybody's research? I would love to make
contact with someone, as my grandmother, Melina's daughter Emma Selena, died
when I was a baby, and I never got to know any of her family.
