Hi Gloria, Belinda's Mother and Father are: Asa
Clothier b.1792 and d. 1861, m. Cloe Rose, b. 1794 and
d. 1879. All of their children were born in
Kemptville, Canada. Belinda was the 3rd child born to
them. This is all the info I have on Belinda as being
born in 1818 march and her brother Ambrose Lyman
b.1817. Plus it is written that she married a
W.C.Marvin,
but as of right now I don't believe anything unless I
have it in hand because I found my Grandmother in the
SSI death records and they not only recorded her birth
date wrong but her mother also, unless some one can
tell me that a nick name for Nancy can be Emma..??
good hunting, and with the dates so close I'm sure its
the same Belinda.

Message Board Post:
Hi Folks,
Just for the record I wanted to clear up some mistakes that I have found on numerous message boards and websites regarding our Clothier/Clother ancestors. This is not a criticism of anyones posting to these sites, just correction of some errors that I continue to see. It is pointed at no one in particular but for dissemination to all Clothier/Clother researchers. I have been doing Clothier research, writing articles, etc. for 40 years. You may accept or ignore this information as you choose, but I felt compelled to finally post this information.
FAMILY HISTORY:
Two brothers John and Jeremiah came to America on the Mayflower. 2nd Version Two brothers, Ambrose and John came to America on the Mayflower. 3rd Version John Clothier arrived in America aboard the Speedwell.
FACT:
The Mayflower came to America in 1620 and there were no Clothier/Clother or any other spelling of this family name aboard. The passengers of the Mayflower have been well documented and anyone can research this and you will find what I have said here is the facts. The family story of the two brothers coming on the Mayflower has existed for well over 100 years, but still no evidence has ever been provided to substantiate the story.
In regards to the story of John Clothier arriving in America aboard the Speedwell. The first Speedwell left England at the same time as the Mayflower. It sprang a leak and could not be fixed. Most of its passengers and cargo were loaded aboard the Mayflower for the voyage to America. No John Clothier was on the Speedwell or the Mayflower at any time. A ship named Speedwell came to America in 1656, but the only name aboard that ship that year that can even be confused as Clothier, is one John COPELAND, age 28. Another Speedwell also came to America on 25 September 1749 and again on 2 April 1807. Neither of them had a passenger named Clothier aboard. Additionally, the Speedwell arrived at Nova Scotia on 18 May 1751 and again on 16 May 1752, neither of these voyages had a Clothier passenger aboard, and both originated in Germany anyway. The ship name Speedwell was common and I am pretty sure that not all of the Speedwells listed here are the same ship.
The first Clothier recorded in any document found to date was Jeremiah Clothier, born ca. 1645 who was of the area of Rimpton, Somersetshire, England, and who came as a servant to John Vining (who was already in America since 1652) on the ship “The Huntsman”. The Huntsman sailed from Bristol, England in March of 1662. He came to America with NO brother John and arrived at Weymouth, Massachusetts April 30 and May 13, 1662. It would appear from the records found that he had served his apprenticeship by 1672. He fought in King Philip’s war in 1676 with the Old Norfolk Regiment under the command of another of my ancestors. Jeremiah was alive when his son died in 1695 but dead before 1699 when his wife Ruth remarried John Bailey/Bayley. She is not mentioned in the Bayley will so it is assumed she was deceased prior to him.
FAMILY HISTORY:
Jeremiah Clothier settled at Colchester, Connecticut on lands called Jeremie’s Farme in the records. This land was given to his son John who raised his family there. The town of Colchester changed its name to Cornwall.
FACT:
The "Jeremiah's of Jeremie's Farme" near Colchester, Connecticut often referred to in early works on this family and used as the reason that his son John went to Colchester, and also to show that Jeremiah was there sometime prior to his son is in fact, a positive reference to one Jeremiah Adams of Hartford, Connecticut, who was granted 300 acres of upland & 40 acres of meadow, where he kept cattle in the winter of 1661. He was granted this land in March of 1661/62. It is unknown by this writer if our Jeremiah was in fact ever at Colchester, but it is known that the "Jeremiah's Farme" is definitely not named for him.
Both Colchester and Cornwall exist today in the state of Connecticut. Colchester and Cornwall are not even in close proximity to each other one being on the west side of the state and the other in the eastern part of the state.
FAMILY HISTORY:
The father of Jeremiah Clothier was Ambrose and his mother was Hannah. Ambrose came to America after his son.
FACT:
There is no record that an Ambrose Clothier ever came to America. The Ambrose who was married to Hannah ??? and lived near Rimpton in England was born ca. 1615 and quite possibly IS Jeremiah’s father. BUT, since he was dead by 1674, it is highly unlikely that he ever came to America either before or after his son, if in fact Jeremiah was his son.
FAMILY HISTORY:
John Clothier, born 1734 married Eunice Squire and died in the Revolutionary War in 1777 at Valley Forge with his head blown off by a cannonball. I went a little overboard here because all of the info below is not necessarily written at the same time in messages that I have seen but all of these facts are attributed to the same John Clothier.
FACT:
John Clother, born 1734, did marry Eunice Squire, BUT he died in New York between 1801 and 1803, as did his wife. The John Clothier who was killed at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania was born in 1758 and was the son of the John and Eunice named above. The following are documented facts about John the son. John the son was never married. He enlisted in the Revolutionary War 26 May 1777 and was killed at Valley Forge 14 November 1777. Some say his head was blown off by a cannonball, no record of this fact has been found. His service record is often confused with that of his father. In fact their files are mixed at the National Archives so it is no wonder that this error has been perpetuated. The cannonball story is supposedly “documented” in "Connecticut Men of The Revolution, War of 1812, and Mexican War." I have been unable to locate a book or reference material with that exact name. Furthermore a search of the Connecticut Soldiers of the Revolution fail!
s to give any information regarding the cannonball story. Other records show that John was killed in November 1777 at The Battle of Ft. Mifflin on Mud Island in the Delaware River. Ft. Mifflin was abandoned after a brave attempt to hold Philadelphia.
Even the DAR records are incorrect in that they have been allowing descendants of John and Eunice Clother use the war record of John the son, but as stated with the files mixed at the National Archive it is understandable that this happened.
Now, I could continue with the FAMILY HISTORY SAYS, but suffice it to say that much research has been done on family stories. Not all of them are incorrect, but most have been exaggerated or embellished somewhat. Also when older people told these stories they were from memory and not necessarily from documents that were available. Please understand that family stories are important and should be repeated, but also research should be done to document these tales so that proof exists to substantiate the tale. Also remember that somehow family stories all have some basis in fact. Proving which fact is correct though is where the work needs to be done. I hope some of the fact presented above will help some of the Clothier family researchers in some way. Again, this was never meant to be a criticism, I am only attempting to dispel some of the inaccuracies that have continued being passed around.
