I posted to this list about 13 years ago and have decided it was time to
see what new information some of you may have on the above Clement
Closson.
He married Mary Housden on 6 Jun 1852 in Galien, Berrien County,
Michigan. They had three children, the last born in Berrien County
in 1856. Mary died shortly after the baby was born and is buried in
Glendora Cemetery, Berrien County. All three of the children were
raised by Catherine Smith Closson Stearns, their grandmother. Catherine
was married to a John or David Closson and was the mother of Clement.
Clement and Mary’s children were
(1) Catherine Cassandra Closson married an Eli Truax and had two sons
William Earl and Orville who were raised by their paternal grandparents
in Buchanan County, Iowa after their parent’s early death in a house fire
in Peru, Chautauqua County Kansas. Of interest Catherine Smith Closson
Stearns and her husband, William Sterns are also buried in Peru, Chautauqua
County, Kansas.
(2) Margaret Angeline Closson married an Earl Stearns in Peru and they
migrated to Washington State
(3) Mary Jane Closson died 30 Oct 1856 probably in Buchanan County, Iowa
at the age of less than one year
I find Clement Closson in the 1856 Buchanan County Iowa Census as widowed
and living in the household of Catherine and William Stearns.
The History of Berrien and Van Buren Counties (Michigan) list Civil War Veterans
from Berrien county as C. C. Closson mustering out 20 Aug 1865 from the 6th
infantry Co A of Berrien County – also a William Closson.
There is also a George W Closson who was mustered out for disability 15 Oct 1862 – Co B
I have found no other records for Clement.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Also any information anyone might
have about Catherine Smith Closson Stearns.
