Hello Sherry,
I am interested to know the Hewitt and Clossons you have in your research. I have also discovered another Hewitt but unable to place her anywhere...Eunice A. Hewitt. Do you have anyone by that name in your tree? Thanks, Marlene
Hi to all who wrote about the above last week. Sorry I couldn't get into
the fray last week.
I have a family bible that starts with John Closson, Jr. married to Amy.
It then goes to Ezra Bates Hewitt m to Mary Ann Closson. This John was
born 25 June, 1791, & died 8 May 1842. He is buried in Genesee Grove
Cem, Genesee Twp, Whiteside Co, IL. I have bee to his grave. John lived
in Yonge Twp, Leeds, Ontario, Canada. I've been there, too. Amy was b.
15 Mar 1793, d. 26 Jan 1851. She is not buried with John.
John & Amy 's daughter Mary Ann was b. 15 Dec 1812. in Yonge Twp. Ezra
& Mary Ann were married 22 Jan 1831 in Yonge Twp. From there, Ezra
appears as a shoemaker in Rochester, NY, 1834, in the city directory.
There were many Hewitts there at that time, but I do not know the
relationship. His son, my ancestor, John Henry Hewitt, was b. there 18
Aug 1834. I saw about where Ezra's store would have been. It was on the
river. There is a convention center there now. The next child, Laura
Ann, was born 23 Sept, 1836, in Green Co Michigan. I have not found
anything else there. The next child, Edward Clark was born there, but
the next & subsequent children were all born in Whiteside Co., beg with
Jacob James, 18 Mar 1841. He died 30 Sept 1842, & is buried on Ezra's
property that Ezra deeded for a cemetery. Another baby, Emma Jenitia, is
also buried there.
From there they all went to New Hampton IA. I obtained a Pioneer
certificate for Ezra from the Iowa Gen. Soc.
I would love to know where the person got Amy's last name, as I
couldn't find it. I also wanted to clear up the confusion about John. I
believe John's mother was Lydia Moss, daughter of Amasa, but have not
been able to prove it. I have Amasa in Washington Co, NY, as well as
John Closson & Lydia. All John's children's names support this theory.
