Hi Gale,
Thanks for posting this. This is Sarah Elizabeth Andrix, whom I have in my records as born August 20, 1884. She was married to Edward Richard Closson (1857-1938) and was survived by two sons, George Edward Closson and Ralph Campbell Closson, who resided in the greater Columbus, Ohio area.
Cheers!

Hi Kathie,
I published a Closson Genealogy in 1992. It traces the ancestry and relations of your grandfather, Delbert Daniel Closson, (Albert Judson , Daniel Linford , John , Jacob , Richard ) who was born on 22 May 1897 and died on 13 Apr 1980. I would be interested in corresponding with you to square away the Roy Closson family about whom I know very little.
Cheers!

Scott,
Another thought on this 1865 MN census. J. C. & E. if this is Jared/Caleb then why not children listed. They would have had an infant plus 4 older children. If this is John Clark then who is E.?

Ann,
I forgot to tell you that I have my gg-Grandmother's Alma (Closson) Harrington's death certificate from the state of Minnesota. She died in 1941 and the certificate states that her father was Jeremiah Closson and mother Eliza Obright. The informant appears to be a Mrs. Orwin Clausen, I assume a daughter, but I know not which one.
Now why is Alma's father listed as Jeremiah? It could be that the informant thought this was where his nickname Jared came from. The informant could also have mistaken Jeremiah for Jeremiah Harrington which is Alma's husbands (John) father's first name. In other words...they got their grandfather's mixed up.
In the case of Eliza Obright, I believe the informant simply anglisized the name Obrist or was misinformed as to the last name over a period of years of oral history passdowns.
Any thoughts?

Caleb/Jared has always been an enigma for me. He is my ggg-Grandfather and his first name is listed many ways:
On the 1860 Census I have him as Caleb C. married to Eliza in Lee County, Illinois. In 1870 I have him in Stearns County, Minnesota as CJ Clausen with his wife Eliza. In 1880 he is Jarred Closson with his wife Eliza A. His marriage shows him as Caleb G. marrying Eliza Ann Abrist.
So my conclusions: His name is probably Caleb with Jared or Gerad as his middle name. This is just a guess. I have searched all over for his 1850 census entry and cannot find one. It is possible Geroge L. is him...however his father Caleb, had a child named George with Tryphena who is much younger. Would he have two Georges?....or would the enumerator make that much of a change to the name Caleb?
I do have a George L. but he is from the Maine clan and not the person in the 1850 census. I think it more then likely a cousin of Caleb (Jared's). His uncle Edward had a son named George for example...though I cannot match him to George L.
I believe Caleb (Jared) was married only to Eliza Ann Obrist. My information on a Eliza Halley is suspect and the marriage information in the Lee County archives makes more sense. Though I can't prove it yet I believe Eliza's father may have been Abram Obrist and her mother Hannah. Of course I've seen crazier things happen with brothers marrying their siblings' widows etc....so who knows for sure without a better oral history passed down.
Looking forward to getting more of the puzzle pieces.

Scott,
Re:Your posting of Caleb/Jared as Caleb G. Closson for his marriage to Elizabeth Ann Obrist 22 Oct 1854 Lee County Illinois.
This brings to mind that I have never found him on the 1850 census. Have you?
In the Caleb [his father] and Tryphena [his step mother] household 1850 census Magnolia Township, Rock County, Wisconson there is a man:
George L. Closson age 26, male, Ocupation: farmer, born New York.
I have posted several times queries as to how this George L. Closson fits into the Closson family. Either no response or no idea.
Since Caleb/Jared name was Caleb G. when he married in 1854 I wonder if he could be the same person as George L. maybe the enumerator meant George C.???? this George L. would be about the right age.
Let me know your thoughts on Caleb/Jared being married to both Eliza Halley and to Elizabeth Ann Obrist. I value your opinion.
Ann

Hi Scott,
Thanks for looking for Edward Closson.
Thanks for the additions and correction for Caleb G. AKA Jared Closson.
Do I understand this correctly?? Caleb G. married Eliza Ann Obrist 1854 NOT Eliza Halley in 1835-1840???
Or maybe he married both of these ladies. I understand he was a member of the Mormon Church when he was in Lee County.
Feel sorry for Ed Closson, no one came forward to claim his body. As if he never existed before he came to New Mexico.

Ann & Margie,
I too checked my Closson data and find no Edward A. Closson.
I verified that you are both correct in our lineage with respect to Eliza Obrist. I found this marriage record reference:
Name: Eliza Ann Abrist
Gender: Female
Spouse Name: Caleb G. Closson
Marriage Date: Oct 22, 1854
Marriage County: Lee
Comments: This record can be found at the County Court Records located at Dixon, IL.
I believe the mispelling of Eliza's name is due to transcription error. My research indicates Jared's real name is Caleb and he was named after his father. Census material shows his name as Caleb, Jarrad, Jared, CJ and others. Hard to trace him...thankfully he had lots of kids with which to match the material.
I will clean up my Closson data and will send you a GEDCOM file if you wish. Let me know.
Scott

An update on some of my Minnesota Closson findings. I found a marriage record that shows an Eliza Ann Abrist marrying a Caleb G Closson on 22 Oct 1854 in Lee County, Illinois. That information matches well with census material. I believe the "A" in Abrist was erroneously transcribed and should be Obrist. As for Caleb Closson...I have seen his first name as Caleb, Jared, Jarrad, and various other versions with just the initials in census material where the rest of the names of the family match. I suspect his real name is Caleb and that he went by Jared, especially in his later years in Minnesota.
