Hi Listers,
I am hoping that someone will know something about this person and be kind
enough to let me know. You may reply on list if you wish.
I found a homestead patent for:
Charles P. Closson of Steele County Minnesota Territory. This is dated 1
June 1859. It is a cash entry for 40 acres in Waseca County Minnesota.
Since the Caleb & Tryphena Closson family were in Rice County in 1859. Since
Rice is adjacent to Steele & Waseca Counties. I am thinking perhaps this
Charles P. could be connected to this family.
Thank you,
Ann Parsons

Hi Listers,
Thought this might be interest to someone. Sharon Weinberger sent me a copy
of a death certificate for:
Name: Kathena Classen
Place of Death: Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota
Date of Death: December 25, 1893
Sex: Female
Age: 76 Years
Marital Status: Married
Birth Place, Father's name, Father's Birth Place, Mother's name, Mother's
Birth Place all have the entry Not Stated
Cause of Death: Heart failure
Filing Date: January 6, 1894
Certificate Number: 93-000182
Sharon sent this thinking it could be Tryphena Spencer Closson as the death
is the same day, age just about right, death location Fargo.
I was in Bismarck for a family reunion and was able to go to the building
where the records are kept. I had the copy of the death certificate with me.
I was told that all the North Dakota statewide records were sent to
Bismarck. They said that Fargo would not have any more information than was
in Bismarck. They said the information was taken from an old ledger. They
said that when the records were copied from the old ledgers that the
transcriber may have not been familiar with the first name and entered what
he/she was familiar with. That the K was a fancy T and the letter t was
really an f. This would be TAFHENA rather than Kathena (pretty close to
Tryphena) and the last name could be Clossen rather than Classen.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi Listers,
Would someone be kind enough to help me some questions I have about the
obituary that was in the Todd County Argus [Todd County, Minnesota on 28 Dec
1893] for Trephine Spencer Closson
Someone cared enough about Tryphena to have corrections to her obituary made
7 days later. [probably the next issue] The correction states Tryphena was
mother to 6 boys & 4 girls. I do have 6 boys & 4 girls listed in my
database. The correction goes on to state that one boy died in infancy and
one died of heart disease contracted in the Army.
I would appreciate it so much if some kind soul would get back to me with
who the child was that died in infancy and the boy who died of heart disease
contracted in the Army.
You may reply on the list if you wish.
Below is a copy of the obituary.
Thank you,
Ann Parsons

A telegram received Tuesday morning brought the sad intelligence of the
death of Mrs. Tryphena Closson, mother of Mrs. A. W. Sheets, which occurred
Christmas evening between six or seven o'clock at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. T. C. Rice, in Fargo. The news was not unexpected, as she had been
quite sick for more than a week previous and being in her 77th year her
recovery was not looked for. Deceased has lived in the vicinity of
Browerville the past twenty years and last fall went up to Fargo to spend
the winter with her daughter. She was the third wife of Caleb Closson who
died ten years ago at the ripe age of 86, and raised a family of five boys
and three girls all of whom are living but one boy. They lived on a farm at
Cannon City, Minn., during the Indian massacre, but sold out there a few
years later and came up to Sauk Centre and in 1873 moved on the farm near
where they sleep the last long sleep of death. She was a kind and faithful
mother and her memory will be a sweet, lingering treasure with her children
until they answer the last summons. Though she lived more than her allotted
span and the bloom of life was withered, death still tugged hard at the
heart strings. Farewell mother.
She will be buried this afternoon at the Neil cemetery, the corpse
arriving on the train from Wadena. The funeral services were held at the
house in Fargo yesterday and there will be no services today.
Correction to obituary published in Todd County Argus 4 Jan 1894 issue. Page
& column not noted. Note received from Sharon Weinberger, not a photocopy of
the correction.
Corrections: Tryphena was mother of six boys and 4 girls. One boy died in
infancy, one died of heart disease contracted in the Army.
My note: Tryphena appears to be the fourth wife of Caleb Closson.
I came across a listing for a William C. Closson d. February 8, 1899 age 80
and wife Hannah d. August 12, 1898 aged 85. They are both buried in
Brownville Cemetery, Jefferson Co., NY. I can't find this William in my
file, would anyone know which line he belongs to? I have a feeling he is
from Caleb's line, but hope someone can tell me exactly.
Thanks,
Willie Armstrong
