Yes, I saw where 3 Sep 1998 you had noted that Josiah is considered the
first Closson in America of the New England Closson. Some genealogies show a
Daniel or Nathaniel as Josiah's father and if anyone has additional
information on this, it would be an interesting discussion. I missed where
the subject of Josiah's birth location was discussed and the replies or
discussion if Daniel & Elizabeth __?__ or Nathaniel or neither set were his
parents.
Appreciate the thank you for bringing the topic up for discussion. I am not
saying Tiverton, Little Compton or neither one was Josiah's birth location
are correct. I am saying with 3 locations and this being spread like
wildfire over the Internet that maybe we who care about these things need to
get some discussion going, get our sources noted, then those of us who care
can decide which would be the best entry from what we then have learned from
each other and note how we arrived at it. Then those that just blindly copy
from the Internet, etc could do their thing.
Thanks for sharing your source for Josiah's birth location. From your
source & the fact he first appears in Woburn it does seem that he may not
have been born in either Tiverton or Little Compton. Are the record books
William Gideon Closson used for his source birth record books or records of
some other nature?
Ann

I don't find any mention of these Clossons in the Josiah Closson
Family. Someone more familiar with the Richard Closson Family may like to
check to see if they appear in The Closson Genealogy Vol 1, 1992, by Dr.
Richard Cochran.

Robert,
I checked my "Closson Strays" no Luther or Luther M. Closson or Matilda
Closson. Hope someone with more experience in the Closson names will be able
to help you.

Since probably no birth record for Josiah extant, does anyone have their
source of where they got their data for his birth location??

I am searching for information about my Great Grandfather, Luther M.
Closson, Born 1867 in Butler County, Clarkville, Iowa. Died 1953 in
Grand Junction, or Cedaredge, Colorado. Luther is my Grandmother Matilda
Closson Johnson's Father.
Hi Carol,
Yes, I know I lived in Massachusetts and fished off that part of RI for
years.
My question is still, back in the 1600's could Little Compton have been
the county seat as well as a town/city?
Doe's anyone have that info?
That would explain why it would be written as Tiverton, Little Compton,
RI. Or maybe whomever gather the info in the first place did not know
where, "Josiah Closson born 1655 in Tiverton, Little Compton, RI" was
really born, so they listed it as Tiverton, Little Compton, RI.
Doe's anyone have a copy of the record of his birth?
Bob
On current atlas I see a Tiverton and a Little Compton. Both places are what
is now in Newport County, RI. I hope to get some dialogue going on these
differences. I am not saying that some are correct and some are incorrect. I
am saying that I see differences and maybe if we can get some input as to
the sources and discussion we can arrive at the most likely one or ones to
select.
Thanks for replying to my message.
Ann

Tiverton, Little Compton RI
Doe's anyone know if Little Compton might have been the County of the
town of Tiverton?
May be what we are looking at is Town, County, State.
Do we know?
Good to see some discussion going on the Closson name!
In regard to Josiah Closson b. 1655 Tiverton, Little Compton RI. Since
Tiverton and Little Compton are what looks to be about 15 miles apart. It
would seem he would have had to have been born in one or the other, not
both.
Does anyone have the source for being born in both, or either Tiverton or
Little Compton.
Ann
Ann, I have info from Shauna on this family. It is somewhat different than
what you have and some is the same. Here goes:
Josiah Closson b.1655 Tiverton, Little Compton, RI d.2-13-1698/9 in Little
Compton, RI. The confusion on the date of death seems to stem from land
records stating that Josiah purchased land 12-21-1698. If the land record
is correct then he had to have died in 1699. Josiah was son of Daniel
Closson and Elizabeth (?) Closson. Married Mary Williamson on 3-10-1678.
Mary was born 7-7-1654 in Marshfield, MA to Timothy Williamson and Mary
Howland. Mary died 1721 in Little Compton, RI.
Children: Martha b.12-1-1679
Timothy b.1-5-1681
Nehamiah b.2-1-1683
Mary b.1-8-1687 (have 2 sources agreeing on this)
Caleb b.4-16-1690 (discovered on same page is listed as
b.4-16-1688 which would make sense)
Hannah b.8-31-1690
Nathan b.2-3-1694
Josiah b.1-16-1697
Does this help?
Beverly
Hi Closson Listers,
I ran across mention of Dewitt Clason on the 1895 U.S. Census for Osage
Twp., Becker Co., MN.
Clason, Dewitt 51 m Wis.. Explorer
Clason, Alice R. 49 f NY
Clason, Zula M. 13 f Minn..
Also have excerpt from 1907 book "A Pioneer History of Becker County,
Minnesota" about Dewitt Clason if anyone is interested.

Hi Closson Listers,
I ran across mention of two congressional contests in 1963, victories for
Don Clausen in northern California and Del Clawson in Los Angeles. Both
Republicans. I have the complete article and the book it is in, if anyone is
interested.

Hi Closson Listers,
3 Sep 1998 Bob James noted that Josiah Closson is considered the first
Closson in America of the New England Clossons. Some genealogies show a
Daniel or Nathaniel as Josiah's father and if anyone has additional
information on this, it would be an interesting discussion.
I recently was given the following data:
Josiah Closson born 1655 in Tiverton, Little Compton, Rhode Island, died
February 13, 1699 Little Compton, Rhode Island. He married Mary Williamson
March 10, 1678. He was the son of Daniel Closson & Elizabeth _____.
This conflicts with data I had received earlier:
Josiah Closson born 1655 in Tiverton, Rhode Island, died 13 Feb 1698-1699
Little Compton, Rhode Island. He married Mary Williamson 10 Mar 1678-1679.
His parents are unknown.
I also see some differences in the children's data.
Mary b. 5 Jan 1687 and b. 5 Jan 1686-1687
Timothy b. 5 Jan 1681 and b. 5 Jan 1680-1681
Nehamiah b. 1 Feb 1683 and b. 1 Feb 1682-1683
Caleb b. 16 Apr 1690 and b. 16 Apr 1688
Nathan b. 3 Feb 1694 and b. 3 Feb 1693-1694
Josiah b. 16 Jan 1697 and b. 16 Jan 1696-1697
Also, one source lists Hannah Closson b. 31 Aug 1690 and the other source
does not list Hannah. This really conflicts with Caleb's birth year.
It appears to me that Tiverton and Little Compton are about 15 miles apart,
it might be interesting to have a discussion about the birth location for
Josiah.
Looking forward to some discussion on these differences.
