Vicky Drake posed several questions regarding the family of Clement
Orville Closson and his wife and information pertaining to them and allied
branches of the family.
The material that appeared in the Closson Genealogy was shared with me by
Mrs. Phyllis Virginia Foster Wright[7], Claudia Murial Stearns Foster [6],
Margaret Angeline Closson Stearns [5], Clement Orville Closson [4]; in
other words, a great granddaughter of Clement Orville Closson and Mary
Housdon/Housden. Mrs. [George] Wright, who last lived in Bellingham,
Washington, had been a genealogist for her particular branch of the family
for well over three decades (I tracked her down through a query she had
placed in an Ohio genealogical magazine from the 1960s when she lived in
Las Cruces, New Mexico -- no mean feat!). She owned family letters, the
old diary that's mentioned here, and had collected many stories of the
family. Unfortunately the last time I spoke with her she was ill and I am
not sure whether she is living.
* Yes, Clement Orville Culver (Dec 1851-9 Jan 1925) was a son of Mary
Closson and Lyman Culver.
* You're right about the 1850 census pertaining to Clement O. Closson, his
brother Daniel, etc. Catherine was their mother, not sister (they didn't
have a sister named Catherine).
* Alton, Buchanan County, Iowa came from Mrs. Wright.
* The death place of Mary, Clement Closson's wife is not noted in the
diary, I don't believe.
I personally would be interested in knowing more about Catherine Closson
Truax and her family; all I know is that she married Eli Truax and had two
sons, Earl and Vern, but don't have any birthdates or death dates for any
of them. Did that branch of the family continue?
The Closson Genealogy includes a reproduction of a grand old photograph
(1890s vintage) of the Lyman Culver family, with the old patriarch, Lyman
Culver and 23 members of his family . They were very handsome people, men,
women and children.
Glad there are others interested in these lines.

Bob James, Closson list owner, has shared some information from
Dr Richard Cochran's "Closson Genealogy" about my Closson family.
As with most things genealogy it has caused more questions....!
Since this branch of Closson's isn't Bob's I felt I should post my
questions to the list and see if anyone from Richard Closson's line
might have some answers.
Dr Cochran's work has given me a great deal of new information. These
questions are attempts to clarify some of this information and in no
way meant to be negative comments about his work.

Does anyone have documentation about this? Margaret's mother, Mary HOUSDEN,
was born and had 2 sisters living in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. I
don't know anything about the Closson family but I'm not aware of Mary's
family being in Marion County, Indiana at any time. Could this reference be

Hi,
I received the following query that I suspect is also a descendant of the
Richard Closson Family. Can anyone help me out with this one?
<<Robert L Coto suggested that you might help me with finding lost
relatives. Looking for information on Corey E. Closson and a Sarah
Evelyn Closson, they would be my g grandparents. My grandmother was
Flossie Josephine Closson. She was born in Swayze Ind. April 2, 1899,
died April 18, 1926 in Dayton, Ohio. Any information would be
helpful. Thanks Donna Bisch

Hi Vicky,
There are two CLOSSON families (that I know of) that have been documented
in book form - "The Josiah Closson Family". 1952. by William Gideon Closson
and "The Closson Genealogy".1992. by Dr. Richard Cochran which details the
Richard Closson Family. My family and the one which I am most familiar is
the Josiah Closson Family. There are descendants of both branches on our
mail list.
The Josiah Closson Family is known as the New England Clossons and the
Richard Closson Family is known as the Ohio Clossons. (Having said all
that Dr Cochran and I share the same belief that they are connected somewhere.)
The Clossons that you mention above do not appear in the Josiah Closson Book.
I have a copy of Dr. Cochran's book and leafed through it ( especially with
the Ohio connections). There is no index so it is difficult for me who
does know these family lines. I found Margaret Angeline CLOSSON [4]
[3-Alfred Closson; 2-Cornelius Closson; 1-Richard Closson] b. 6 Dec 1840
and a Clement Orville Closson [4] [3-John Closson; 2-Jacob Closson;
1-Richard Closson] b. abt 1828. The book also contains quotes from
Clement's diary of 186/57.
Perhaps some Richard Closson descendants could help Vicky out?
There are copies of Dr. Cochran's book for sale or you may want to write to
him.
Feel free to contact me if this posting does not generate some help.

Hello All,
Anyone researching their ancestors who part of the Port Roseway Group of
Loyalists ?
I am working on this project at the moment and would like to communicate
with anyone working on the families listed below.
Port Roseway (now called Shelburne), was chosen for settlement by a
group of Loyalists being evacuated from New York in 1783 before it fell
into American hands.
An Association was formed to organize those wishing to be evacuated to
Port Roseway. With the closing of the Association's Membership roll on
25 March 1783, many families who remained loyal to Britain signed up for
the anticipated evacuation of New York and Boston. By March 27th, there
were more than 400 Loyalist families in New York waiting to be
transported to Port Roseway. Such was the enthusiasm in New York about
Governor Parr's promise of land in Nova Scotia, that the Associates'
numbers doubled in a short time.

Hi Pam,
Welcome to the Closson maillist. I think we can be of some help. Sabra
CLOSSON was the eldest of six children of John CLOSSON b. aft 1738 at
Lebanon, CT, d. Bef 1783 in the Revolutionary War on expedition to Canada
and was buried on the field. 6 Sep 1764 at Lebanaon, CT., he married Sabra
ALGER (First Congregational Church Early CT Marriages 2-47). Sabra was
born 21 Sep 1741 and died 1 Dec 1827 at Thetford, VT. as Sabrah STEWART,
widow. (She married second .... STEWART).
I have Sabra CLOSSON's birth as 4 Apr 1765 at Lebanon, CT from the Thetford
Records, but you could be correct about the date.
John CLOSSON served in the French and Indian Wars 1758-1760. About 1769 he
took his wife and two children and his mother and sister and moved to
Vermont and settled on the White River near Hartford, VT. A few years
later he bought three farms at Thetford, VT.
He volunteered 27 Jan 1766 Capt Ebenezer GREEN's Co., Col Timothy BEDELL's
Regt (N.H. Rangers) in expedition against Canada and is said to have died
about 1 Aug 1776 of small pox in the woods and buried on the banks of the
Richelieu River near Chambly. Two of his farms were divided among the
heirs and the third was sold to settle debts. (Records of the Governor and
Council, State of Vermont. 3-18 Feb 1783.)

Hello,
I'm new to the Closson list. I am currently looking for any research
on Sabra Closson b. 17 Nov 1765 in Connecticut. She married John
Annis 10 Sep 1783 in Orange, Vermont and died 21 Jun 1833 in New York.
Her son was John Closson Annis. If anyone has any information about
her parents, I would be especially grateful.
Thank you.
