I too am curious about why the names Michael and Hannah weren't passed down
in Joseph's line, but they don't seem to have been passed down in Michael's
son Phillip's line either. Maybe Michael went by a middle name among friends
and family? Of Michael's sons' names (Joseph, John, William, Peter,
Phillip), the names John and William were carried down in Phillip's line, as
well as being the names of our Joseph's first two sons. Also, the John Close
and Nancy McDade who were married by the same minister as Joseph and Rachel
had a son named Peter. If nothing else, Michael's sons' names kept going in
the families. The more I look at the overall migration pattern of Michael's
family, the more I think there could be a connection with our Joseph.
Michael was living in Berkeley, VA by at least the 1770s, where he married
Hannah. By the 1800 census, he and Hannah were living in Hanover Township
(Beaver County) in western Pennsylvania. I'm not sure where in the township
they lived, but the western edge of it is only about ten miles in a straight
line from Joseph and Rachel's family, as well as from where Michael and
Hannah's brother-in-law Daniel Shivley settled in Ohio (also in Jefferson
County). Of Michael's sons: - William was living in Hanover Township (Beaver
County) in the 1800 census. He wasn't there in 1810, but there was a William
Clouse (as well as a William and James Moffitt) living in Pike Run,
Washington County, PA, which was where Daniel Shivley had lived in 1800
before going to Ohio. -Peter was living in Hanover Twp (Beaver County) in
the 1800 census. In 1820 there was a Peter Close living in Wellsburg, Brooke
County, VA (on the Ohio river in the county between Washington, PA and
Jefferson, OH). 1n 1830, a Peter Close lived in Hanover Twp (Beaver County).
- Phillip was absent in the 1800 census, but in the 1810 census was in
Hanover Township in Washington County, which I think the other Hanover split
off from when Beaver County was created in 1800. In 1820 there was a Phillip
Close living in Wellsburg, Brooke County, VA. By 1840, Phillip was living in
Marion County, Ohio. -John was living in Hanover Twp (Washington County) in
the 1810 census. In 1820, there was a John Closse living in Hanover Twp
(Beaver County). The John Close and Nancy McDade who were married in
Berkeley, VA/WV had a son named Peter who was born in Washington County, PA
around 1810, and later lived in Wellsburg, Brooke County, VA. -Joseph is the
only son who I can't find any record of, if he's not the same person as our
Joseph. Given the fact that the family went from Virginia (in an area
heavily settled by people from MD and Eastern PA) to Western Pennsylvania,
and then seems to have bounced around between adjacent counties in VA/WV,
PA, and OH, that could explain why our Joseph's children didn't really know
which state he was actually from. If this is the same Joseph, I also wonder
how much contact he had with his siblings, and why he moved to Ohio and
stayed while the rest of them seemed to have moved around a lot. On an
unrelated note, another thing that I'm curious about was in our Joseph's
will. In the accounts papers, under the debts paid, it said that $132.75 was
paid to his son George Close. When his real estate and personal property
only sold for about $232, that seems like a huge amount to have gone to one
son, especially one who wasn't in charge of the estate. I'm wondering if
that was money that he had borrowed from George for some reason?
