I am researching my family from Marion Ohio. My grandfather was Francis William Close born in Marion in 1908 and his father was Cleora Close married to Florence Ortman. My grandfather had a sister named Vivian Louise Close. My mother was named for her (Marguerite Vivian)
I wonder if we are the same family. I have stalled at my great grandfather Cleora. If you have any information or pictures I would be greatful.

There's a lot of discussion already on here about the descendants of Joseph Close and Rachel Moffett, but I wanted to put out some of the other info I've been coming across to see what people think about it...
Joseph and Rachel were married in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia) on 11/21/1793. They were married by David Young, and a notation in one of the marriage records I found said that the original record was from a German congregation. When I looked for information about David Young, he seems to have been the minister at some of the Lutheran churches in the area.
The same marriage records show a wedding of John Close to Nancy McDade on 8/12/1795, and William Moffatt to Elizabeth Cook on 12/5/1793. David Young also performed both of these marriages. Based on the similar time frame and the fact that the same minister was involved, I'm guessing John Close and William Moffatt are relatives (possibly siblings) of Joseph and Rachel. There was also a marriage of John Close and Mary Cerby (also transcribed as Cerdy or Cealy) on 6/19/1788, performed by Hugh Vance in a different congregation. I'm curious whether this was two marriages for the same John, or whether they were two different people.
John Close and Nancy McDade had a son named Peter Close, who married Eliza Jane Ackerman. Eliza's gravestone spells her last name as Klose, suggesting that the spelling might not have been standardized among the family at that point.
Years ago I noticed a Michael Close (also spelled Michiel or Michel) who appeared in the Berkeley County tax records in 1787. This seems to be the Michael Close (or Closs) who married Hannah Christian Tschumi and died in Beaver County, PA. Some of Hannah's family moved to Jefferson County, Ohio around the same time that Joseph and Rachel did, making a connection seem likely. I also found a message board post in the Closs forum that says Michael's will lists his sons as John, Joseph, William, Peter, and Phillip.
Based on all of the above, it seems likely that Joseph and John Close were brothers, and were the sons of Michael and Hannah. The question then becomes who Michael Close (or Closs) was. It seems to be commonly thought that he was born in Germany, and some people think he might be the same as the Hans Michel Claus who arrived on the ship Phoenix.
Has anyone else come across any of this, or found any leads to push things back further?
