Lets start with Things I definitely know:
A gravestone in Ballycarry cemetery has the following inscription:
"Erected by Thomas Close in loving memory of his daughter Sarah who died 27th November 1894 aged 2 years
And two children died in infancy
The above named Thomas Close, died 30th August 1914 aged 70 years, also his beloved wife Margaret Close died 28th June 1927 aged 80 years"
This refers to Thomas Close (Married to Margaret Jane McCormack), Whose Parents were John Close and Matilda Graham
I have a note (origin unknown) which states that this "John Close is possibly the brother to Thomas Close who married Sarah Cameron".
I am certain that your John Close 1819-1865 was NOT the child of John Close and Matilda Graham, whose children were Letitia, William, Eliza and Thomas (whose gravestone is mentioned above), Matilda Graham being Born 1820.
The Thomas Close who married Sarah Cameron in 1858 could be son to John and Eliza, and Brother to John (wife of Matilda)
I Have no record of John and Eliza
Its getting late and I hope that makes some sense

Hi,
I have had a bit of a breakthrough with my Close family of Ballycarry recently and think it fits into what I see here.
My ancestors were John Close (1819-1865) and Elizabeth Cameron (1830-1904), I strongly suspect that John Close was the eldest son of John Close and Matilda Graham. I know definately that his parents were from Mutton Burn so if it isn't John and Matilda then it seems to be other close family.
What I am confused about is a marriage of Thomas Close to Sarah Cameron in 1858. Either Thomas was the son of my John and Eliza or he was the son of John & Matilda. If he is the son of my John and Eliza then Eliza was too young to be his mother as he seems to have been 20/21 when married, putting his birth around 1837/38.
The other option is that he is the Thomas born in 1841, son of John Close and Matilda Graham. He would still be quite young though, nt the 21 implied on marriage certificate by 'full age'.
I have been unable to find a marriage of a Thomas Close to Margaret Jane McCormick as mentioned on this thread. Can I ask what evidence exists for this union? Is it possible that the two Thomas's have been mixed up and allocated to the wrong John Close?
I would be interested to hear what people think about this!

sorry got that wrong, Roberts parents married in 1902 (not grandfather) and he was born 1903. So Robert's father married his 6yro step sister when she was a teenager. I am pretty sure his grandfather was also a Robert Shaw close (or maybe great Grandfather) and one of them was a prodestant minister in Ireland.

Great! Keep me posted when you have a chance to access any more info. One question though...which step-sister did Robert's father marry? If Robert was born in 1903 and his grandfather remarried in 1902, it wasn't the 6 yro daughter! Anyway, my father and grandfather are both James...we love to repeat those names, don't we? We still have lots of Roberts in the family too.

Sounds like there is a connection, my Robert Shaw Close was an author born in Camberwell Victoria Aust in 1903. Robert's father was the son of an Irish widower with 2 sons (one was Robert's father)who married his new bride (porugese women with 6yro daughter) in 1902. Robert's father married his step sister. I do have there names but am at work so would have to look them up later. My grandfather Arthur close and his father James Close both lived in Prahran Victoria. I cant find out anything about James Close but i know Athur's mother was Lillian Lester, James and her met on a ship while working together. No record of them getting married

Hi Katherine..
I don't know if our lines could possibly be connected, but do you have more info on the parents of Robert Shaw Close? Is there an Irish connection? I have a Robert Shaw Close in my tree, but born 1827 in Ireland. I wonder if your Robert Shaw Close is related (it would be logical)? I do have Close relatives in Australia, but they emigrated later. Andrew Close arrived in Australia in 1925. He died in Prahran, Victoria, Australia in 1978. His daughter Jean still lives near Melbourne. There MUST be some connection, don't you think?
