I know I'm a little late to the party. I am a descendant of Melchior/Ernest. My father moved here (Northampton County, PA) from Colorado so my father, brother, and I are the only Closes I know around here.

The story passed down though our line (rumor) is that our line was of German descent (never proven).
The DNA match does is not enough to determine the exact relationship. It determines only that they had a common male CLOSE direct ancestor.
That my Jacob CLOSE was a contemporary of Peter does does not determine if either was a brother, cousin, nephew or uncle (great,, grand or otherwise).
Although contemporaries, my Jacob CLOSE was born much earlier than your Peter.
But where there is smoke, there is fire. Because I know they descend from the same CLOSE ancestor, I feel it is in my advantage to research both lines.
Interestingly, and this may or may not be a clue, there was a George CLOSE in Nelson County, Kentucky in and around 1784 (which is where Jacob CLOSE settled). We have never been able to connect the two but have always suspected a connection. I do not know if the George CLOSE line has yet had their Y-DNA markers checked.

Hi...I just got back here and reread your reply.." Although our CLOSE DNA was an exact match to that of a descendant of Peter CLOSE and Jemima THORLEY, however my earliest known CLOSE ancestor was not a descendant of that Peter Close."...so now Im just a little confused..if you dont decend thru Peter & Rebecca (son Peter & Jemimia) did peter 1778 have a brother Jacob? that may have traveled with him to VA from Germany/Ireland...I can track Peter & Rebecca in VA getting married in 1810......Traci

I also want to add that the pdf file mentioned has lots of information in it, but not all of it is correct. For example, Jacob's son John W. is shown as having unknown wife and 1 child, but he actually had 11 children (one of which was my gg-grandfather). Nevertheless, I think looking at the file can provide leads which can then be documented. One of the things I found interesting was the alternate spellings for Close... possibly the reason we hit a brick wall for John (father of Peter), is that the family name may have changed when they immigrated.

I am thinking that there was more than one Peter Close. Someone mentioned that Peter is found in both the 1820 census records for Virginia and Ohio. In the 1810 Virginia census, Peter is shown as having children, yet I belive that Peter married Rebecca in 1810 (in either Virginia or Pennsylvania). If that is true, then either he had children from another marriage (or younger siblings living in the home, children out of wedlock, etc.) or that is not the Peter who married Rebecca in 1810. I suppose the marriage date could be something other than 1810, too.
I, too, am descended from a Jacob Close, but my Jacob, I believe lived in Ohio (about 1805-1860). Jacob married Margaret Frye and was the son of Joseph Close (Peter's brother, I think).
I think that much confusion results from the fact that these folks had many children, and many of those children were named after their ancestors. So, there are a lot of Peters, Johns, Josephs, Jacobs, etc. in different brances of that family.

Thank you for your kind offer of a copy of the PDF file, but I would rather work with raw data and come up with my own theories.
I too wonder about the Ohio connection and especially the repeat of the name Peter CLOSE in the two families.
I wonder if anyone has done a Y-DNA marker test of a direct male line descendant of Christian CLOSE to see what that descendant's DNA looks like.
Although our CLOSE DNA was an exact match to that of a descendant of Peter CLOSE and Jemima THORLEY, however my earliest known CLOSE ancestor was not a descendant of that Peter Close.
My earliest known CLOSE ancestor, Jacob CLOSE, was a married adult residing in Kentucky by 1784. [Remember that prior to 1784, the "Kentucky territory" was part of Virginia and the territory of Kentucky was not to become a "state" until 1792].
Jacob's wife was from Prince William County, Virginia. In the wedding record of Jacob's son, John, and in the baptismal records of some of John's children, it is noted that John's father, Jacob CLOSE, was from North Carolina.
