Hi all,
I just thought I would pop my CLOSE line in here in the hope of making a connection with someone on this list with this line.
My gt, gt grandmother was Janet CLOSE b. abt 1868 Co. Down, Ireland. She appears to have arrived in Lanarkshire Scotland between 1873 and 1878 with her family.
Janet's parents were James CLOSE (b. 1840, Dromore, Down, Ireland) and Agnes WILKINSON (b. 1839, Dromore, Down, Ireland). Their other children that I have worked out so far were:
- David CLOSE b. 1865 Ireland
- Jane CLOSE b. 1866 Ireland
- Janet CLOSE b. abt 1868 Ireland
- Isabella CLOSE b. abt 1869 Ireland
- William CLOSE b. abt 1869 Ireland
- Samuel CLOSE b. abt 1873 Ireland
- ? CLOSE b. abt 1873 Ireland
- John CLOSE b. abt 1878 Lanarkshire, Scotland
The parents of James CLOSE (b. 1840, Dromore, Down, Ireland) were John CLOSE and Isabella BLACK.
In Oct 1888 gt, gt grandmother Janet CLOSE married Robert Speirs LINDSAY, a neighbour from Bellshill, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I understand their families to be typical mining families from a typical mining village. What is not typical about their marriage is that they were married in Bleurfield (?), Pennsylvania, USA, and their first child, Andrew LINDSAY, was born there. They then returned to Scotland and back to the coalmines (they appear in the 1901 census back in their same old mining village in Lanarkshire).
I perhaps understand them going, but why come back? And how could they afford to be travelling across the world, and then come back again !!! >From what I can tell so far, none of the rest of the family headed to America (though I may be wrong on this fact), so why did they.
Janet and Robert had three more children once back in Scotland, James, Elizabeth and Robert, before Janet died in 1896, at the age of 28 years.
Hoping I can make a connection with someone.

Andrew Close is a very common name in County Down, Ireland. My Andrew Close
was born in Balleny, Dromore, County Down, Ireland on 18 Feb1806 and married
Frances Glen on 18 Mar 1826 in Kircubbin, Down, Ireland. Their children were
John (1832); Anne (1835); Mary (1837); Andrew (1838); Frances (1841); Robert
S. (1842) and Elizabeth (1844). Andrew Close's parents were Thomas Close
(1766) and Mary Thompson (1771). They were married about 1792 in Dromore,
Down, Ireland. This is the Close family that Robyn Close is descended from,
so am I. Andrew Close with his family came to the U.S. and then migrated to
Arran Twp; Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. I have the records on this Andrew
Close and have been to the place in Canada where they crown deeded 100
acres. I believe that Andrew Close had a sister named Elizabeth.Close who
married a Thomas Montgomery in County Down, Ireland on 29 Sep 1817. I do not
have much information on Elizabeth. I hope this information helps some on
this Andrew Close.

Hi Robyn--Hope you still see this. Your Andrew and Fannie Glen keep popping
up in my research, and I feel there must be some connection, though I can't
get to what... If anyone sees where the info below fits any other research,
I'd LOVE to know. Here's what I know of MY Andrew Close (and the rest) also
from County Down...
ANDREW CLOSE b. 1832 probably in County Down, Ireland ?; d 1882 ? in
Newtownards, Co. Down **Father has been listed as Andrew as well, although I
haven't been able to find anything further.
I expect like your Andrew, Andrew's father must have been born in the early
1800s. I thought at first his parents could have been Andrew Close and
Fannie Glen, but it doesn't make sense as your JOHN was born to them in
1832, (same as my ANDREW) and the Andrew born to your Andrew and Fannie
wasn't born until 1841. Mine was married in 1853, which would have made him
only 12...nope.
Anyway, I believe that my Andrew born in 1832 to Andrew and unknown wife had
a brother, Robert and a sister Jane (b. 1829 ?), as those two have been
found with ANDREW CLOSE listed as FATHER, just as my ANDREW has. JANE may
have been married to a James Magee (on 31 Mar 1851). The marriage was found,
but not sure if it's my Jane...or if Jane is really my Andrew's sister.
Andrew married Matilda Bell (1829-1881) in Newtownards, Co. Down on 17 Sep
1853
ANDREW AND MATILDA's CHILDREN:

died in Australia, possibly in 1978. Possible married to an Amy Emily Ross?

Hi! Do you know where/when this Andrew close died? I have an Andrew Close
in my tree as well, and from the same area of County Down, Ireland, but he
married Eliza(beth) Wilson and had a number of children there in Ireland.
One was my relative Andrew Close (b. 1832) who married Matilda Bell and had
a number of children in Co. Down. My direct relative was Robert Close (b.
1867) who emigrated to England and then to Scotland.

There is a connection to the Close family of Whiting/Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. My great uncle Paul John Scholz was in the grain and hay business and then an automobile agency, before it all fell apart.
The Close family member and Paul John Scholz then started a grapefruit orchard down in south Texas near Brownsville, TX. But before it could started good, a hurricane came along and destroyed the orchard. During the hurricane Paul John Scholz stepped on some glass, developed gangarine poisoning to the leg, and it was removed. He died in April of 1941 and was brought back for burial in the Vogel cemetery (now Merriville, IN). He was married to Selma Vogel, and her brother Robert started the cemetery. They had two daughters, Selma Scholz and ? (cannot remember name at this time.
Any help making the connection would be greatly appreciated.
