Hi Katherine can not help you to much but I also had a relitive called Arthur on the HMAS Perth but he was Arthur Stirk and worked as a Stoker on the ship. You may want to read out of the smoke by Ray Parkin. He(Ray Parkin) was on the Perth and wrote three books about what happened the first one is(out of the smoke) this about the ship being sunk and the survivours.Sadly Arthur Stirk didnt make it and is listed as missing presumed killed.Your Arthur Joseph Close is listed on the Australian war memorial his rank is Petty Officer and his death is listed as the night of the Perths sinking 1 March 1942 his service number is 19131 they have him as born 18 October 1910 in Prahran vic and his next of kin as Jean Close. He enlists in Melbourne.

Dirk: The original spelling of my Close line was KLOSS, the Klose and finally Close.
The best approach is to work your way backwards, starting with your father, then grandfather and on back, until you know for sure where your ancestor came from. I have met several others who are descended from Leonard Melchior KLOSS who came to US in the 1700s with wife and 2 year old son, Ernst (Earnest). So far I don't think anyone has been able to find Leonard's father in Germany. At the time my ancestors came to America, there was a lot of religious persecution against anyone who was not Catholic. Mine were Lutheran, at least when in US because buried in Lutheran cemetery. They first came to Pennsylvania, then moved to Ohio and mine moved to Kansas, where my father and uncles were born.
If you have any dates, etc. to go with the names maybe someone could help you. You could also post on the KLOSS message board also.
Sarah

My Close lineage is of German descent, so i am told. I was told a story of a couple of brothers that had a fight and one of them changed their name to Close. I was told the original name was Closs (Sp?) I am not sure of the spelling and I am sure the phonetics of the original name in the story has drifted. My Grandfather was born in Missouri,Charles Edward Close born to Edward and Amanda.
I have just started my search for paternal lineage. I hope this bit of info is helpful.
Best Wishes,
Dirk Close
