I am researching the Close line from Verviers, Belgium that settled in the Massachusetts area in 1923. I am able to go as far back as the 1880s in Belgium, but no further. My husband, Herbert Close, is the grandson of one of the original immigrants, Nicolas Close. Nicolas came from Verviers with his wife, Adolphine in 1923. They settled in Lawrence, MA, with their three children, Wallace (1), Antoinette (18), and Nicholas (15 - my husband's father). Wallace married a woman named Mildred, who we believe is still alive in Dracut, MA, but have been unable to contact. She had three children, David, Leah and Richard. David died in 1988, we have reason to believe that Leah is still alive and now has the surname Reynolds, but we have been unable to contact her as well. We have no trace of Richard. Antoinette married William McDowell and had we believe two children, Dorothy and Diana. Dorothy we know died soon after birth, and Diana became a Roderick (we can't find any marriage reco!
rds, but deed records show her as a Roderick). Nicholas married Irmgard Kachel from Germany (he was a merchant marine), and had three children, Herbert (my husband), Virginia (now Reagan), and Richard. If you have any information about either any of the living relatives I have listed, or any information that shows the origin of the family in Belgium, I would appreciate it. The information that I have collected already is on ancestry.com in the "Close Family" family tree. Thank you!

I have checked out your web site, and can't find any information that is relevant to my family search. If you have any inforation, would you please let me know? Also, if you want further information about any of the people I have listed, there are sources and more detailed information on my ancestry.com "Close Family" tree (or you may contact me!). Thanks!

you might want to look at the St Lawrence County, NY site. There were several Closes there. My line, John and Katherine, came from Ireland to Canada(1820S) to Parishville,NY. There was a line in Gouveneur,NY.

I have recently embarked on a one-name study of the surname CLOSE and its variants CLOSS, CLOWES, CLOWSER and CLUSE. You can read more about this family history project and search my England & Wales bmd database at http://www.one-name.org/profiles/close.html.
If you are researching any of these surnames anywhere in the world, please get in touch.

Hello Mattmann
I still have Close Relatives in Belfast,...but I thankyou for the contact. I'm not certain if you are aware, but Close...is found primarily in England...with offshoots in Ireland, Scotland and Wales...
There is a branch of the Close Family who moved from Northern Ireland to Scotland from Cnty Down in the 1800's, a William Black Close and his wife Margaret MacAvoy....they were from Dromore, Cnty Down and are connected to Glasgow, with descendents in Bellshill...
Have you been to www.CloseAncestry.com ??/ Mainly English but have other connections.
All the Best in your continued Search
Wendy

Hi there....
Sorry but at this point I'm not certain...I've gotten back to circa 1820 to John Close the father of my grt grt grandfather James Watson Close b. 1843...however, once you get back further than 1860's the Irish records become very difficult to search....I'm still working to establish James Watson's mother and siblings...if I find anything of interest will get back to you.
All the Best
Wendy
