Hello Virgil, My husband's gr-gr-grandfather was Joseph Close who married Rachael Moffett in 1793 in Berkeley Co., VA. We believe there is a connection to Michael. Joseph and Rachael settled in Jefferson/Carroll/Columbiana Counties in Ohio about 1800. We are not sure when Joseph was born but he died in 1848 in Columbiana Co., OH. Several people in this line have worked on this line. Would you send your email address that we might explore this connection further. Thank you.
Betty Close

coincidentally, by the time of the WWII battle in Belgium, our CLOSE surname had been corrupted to CLAUSE. My uncle met a CLOSE or CLAUSE family in Liege and they became lifelong friends and correspondents.

My earliest known CLOSE ancestor was in NC and KY. He may have been in VA, as his wife was from Prince William County, VA. In anyevent, one of my male cousins graciously participated in a "Y" DNA study (male line) and we matched a CLOSE line who's earliest know ancestor was a contemporary of my ancestor. That CLOSE had been in the PA and VA area. It would be interesting to compare DNA markers.

Thanks for the offer of the book but since we have no connection, save it for someone who does. I'm sure you'll find a connection. Sometimes it takes a lot of waiting but then the connection is made. Good luck in finding further information. Sarah

Hi Sarah: My earliest ancestor of record was MICHAEL CLOSS who leased a 207 acre farm in berkeley Co., VA from
George Fairfax, Where Michael came from is unknown, but chances are that he was part of the large migration which came froom Pennsylvania in that period, but I have no way of findina further information. Michael's wife wzs ANN
(Hannah)CHRISTIAN TSCHUMI, who was born in Berne Province, Switzerland. and migrated with her parents in 1750. I have a book which I printed about this family and their son Philip, my great-greatgrandfather. I'd be glad to share a copy, if I knew how to get it to you. Virgil

I would like to know more about your Close line. I am also a Close descendant with German roots and my ancestors came to America in 1752 but they settled in Pennsylvania. When they first came they spelled the name Kloss and then Klose and finally the changes stopped with Close. Sarah Close McCray

i AM UNABLE TO HELP YOU, BUT I AM A CLOSE WHO JUST HAPPENED TO SPEND SEVERAL MONTHS IN VERVIER DURING THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE IN EARLY 1945, BILLETED WITH A FAMILY BY THE NZAME OF CORNESSE. THOUGH THE CITY SEEMED A BIT DREARY DURING THAT BITTER WINTER, I AM SURE THAT IT IS A DELIIGHTFUL PLACE IN PEACETIME.
I DESCEND FROM A DIFFERENT FAMILY OF CLOSES, WHO WERE OF GERMAN AND SWISS ORIGIN. THEY WERE IN AMERICA IN THE EARLY 18TH CENTURY, IF NOT EARLIER. BEST WISHES IN YOUR SEARCHING. VCLOSE
