Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
In follow-up to the Lanarkshire reference below, info in the History of
Tucker COunty (West Virginia) says David Close and Agnes Ferguson arrived in
the US about 1847. He initially worked in the mines around Lonaconing and
New Creek, Maryland before moving to West Virginia. Does this open up any
possible connections with other Close families? Also would Robyn Close's
website be helpful? Seem to be at a dead end. Pam

Sarah, I keep getting a "nondeliverable" on the email you provided as I try to email some scanned documents to you. Would you happen to have an alternate email or fax number or even a phone number. I've never had this problem before but I'll keep trying - I don't think it's a lose nut at the keyboard but then again . . :)

Hello Robyn, I am still researching the John Close family from Ahoghill,Antrim,Ireland. Haven't heard much but have seen lots of postings on this site. My John was born in 1798 and emigrated to South Gower, Ontario, Canada in the early 1820s we believe to get work building the Rideau canal. He was one of the first settlers and is mentioned in the McCabe list. We found church records on the family at Holy Cross church in Kemptville. That is where he is buried. We went to Ireland and did some research. It seems that most of the Closes are protestant there and they don't want to talk about our line. Too bad as I think they were all related. Possibly the line was transplanted there during Cromwell and married natives. If you ever run across any of this let me know.
John Close born 1798 Antrim Ireland married Catherine Mulreny also from Ireland. They had
John 9/3/1838 and died 12/28/1916,
William 1834 and died 2/3/1889,
Elizabeth born 8/18/1840 and died 1/5/1922and wife of Samuel Brown,
Annie died 9/23/1879,
and Mary born 5/15/1846 and died 2/12/1917.
Any info will be appreciated. Margaret

Tim I forgot to tell you in the last message, Robyn Close is my cousin. Her
great grandfather was a brother to my great grandmother Frances Close.. I
have been to Canada and met with her. Her great grandfather John Close was
one who crown deeded the property in Arran township, Bruce County, Ont.
Canada. We both studied our Close family together. We still do not know
what happened to the parents of John Close. We cannot find their graves as
of yet. His parents came to Philadelphia after 1845 from County Down,
Ireland. John had several siblings. Some stayed in Canada, some migrated
to the U.S. I do have all of their information. The parents to John
Watson, and my great grandmother Frances Close were Andrew Close and Fanny
Glen, their parents were Thomas Close and Mary Thompson. All born in County
Down, Ireland. Going back farther than that, you have to go to the parishes
in the local area for that information. I believe most of the Closes that
came from Ireland between 1840 to 1860 were possibly related.

Thanks for the information Daniel. Do you have any idea of dates Andrew
landed in Philadelphia? This is probably part of the branch that I
mentioned a few threads ago about the Close's being from Ireland,
England and Germany. There is a Robyn Close that has her branch
available that shows folks from Ireland - have you seen this. You may
be able to make great headway if that matches your branch. Interested
in the dates if you have them.
Thanks,
Tim

You mentioned Closes being in Pennsylvania. I have a great grandfather,
Andrew Close and family landing in Philly, I do not know if he died
there,
but his children went on to Canada in Ontario. They were from County
Down,
Ireland. I cannot find the burial site of Andrew or his wife Fanny
Close.
His Children I have traced down, since my great grandmother was Frances
Close. She married a Watson and they moved to Kansas.

Sarah, you have the oldest date of a CLOSE in Pennsylvania of 1738. Any
dates I have are 50 years after that. At one time there must have been a
lot
of CLOSE folks in Pennsylvania because of what I find in the census
listings. I am stuck at a wall but am also looking at the different
branches that came to Pennsylvania. It seems there were three, German,
Irish, English. Are most of your family still in the Philadelphia area?
I
am still trying to find some solid information about the CLOSES in the
Bradford County area - I believe they came from the Newbury Cloos clan
but
no dates or proof. Did your family end up going to western Pennsylvania
at
all. There was a group in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties but they
all
seem to come later(1800's). I have an Aunt that just turned 100 on the
16th
that lived in Westmoreland County all her life. She was part of a
family of
seven whose father came from the Union/Snyder County area. Would like to
know more about your branch - T!

Daniel & Tim,
If you have knowledge of the CLOSE family in CO Down, would you happen
to have knowledge of a Mary Close who married a Hugh McShane in around
1849? They resided in the Kircubbin area.

WAS,
I saw your querie to Mary Ann. Please read the below and how a Mary was
in/around County Down. I have found that any lead can sometime produce
results. Also I an still looking for Robyn Close's website that give a
whole family tree of Closes from Ireland. I forward it if/when I find it.
Tim
I saw the Lanarkshire reference and thought maybe there was some connection
with my family. I know very little except that my great great grandfather,
David Close was born 5 Feb 1823 in Ayreshire, Scotland: married Agnes
Ferguson in either Old Monkland, Lanarkshire or Glasgow and emmigrated in
1848.
He arrived in the US and settled in Virginia/West Virginia with his first
son being born on ship. Died in1847. His children were William Thomas
Close, John William Close, James Close, Mararet Close, Alexander Close,
Sarah Jane Close, and Isabel C Close (my great grandmother).
I am very much interested in any connections to the Scotland time period,
expecially those that would trace the family to their origin. Possibly
Ireland or Wales. Thanks for any insight someone may have.
Pam

The youngest daughter of Andrew and Fanny Close was born in 1844 in Ireland.
The earliest tax records I have of the Closes in Ontario Canada was in 1858.
This was from the oldest son. The Close children were starting to marry
about 1860 in Canada, one of the girls being only 15 at the time. My great
grandmother Frances Close was born in 1841 in Ireland, and in her obit
stated that they came to Philadelphia, Penn with her parents. She died in
1924 in Smith County, Kansas. She married in 1861 in Grey County, Ontario,
Canada, but mainly lived with her brothers in Bruce County, Canada. She and
her husband and children migrated to the U.S. in 1876 to Kansas where they
lived rest of their lives. Most of her children were born in Bruce County,
Canada. Her oldest daughter was lynched in 1889 in Wyoming.
While living in Canada with her brothers, it did not mention her parents
being there. My guess is, they might of died in Penn.

Would like to
know more about your branch - T!
hanks for sharing.

Thanks for the information Daniel. Do you have any idea of dates Andrew
landed in Philadelphia? This is probably part of the branch that I
mentioned a few threads ago about the Close's being from Ireland,

WAS,
I saw your querie to Mary Ann.
Pam

Daniel & Tim,
If you have knowledge of the CLOSE family in CO Down, would you happen
to have knowledge of a Mary Close who married a Hugh McShane in around
1849? They resided in the Kircubbin area.

Hello Sarah - I received your email regarding the Cloos/Close/Kloss line. I wonder if we could share info. I have never been able to go back any further than Reuben Cloos born 1743 on the 1790 Census for Mohawk Town, Montgomery Co., NY.
I can faintly remember some of my family saying our name was once Kloss, then Cloos and some changed to Close. I have Newbury & Esther Cloos (my GGG Grandparents) coming to Tioga Co., PA in 1807. They had 11 children, 2 of whom changed their name to Close.
Would love to compare notes. You can contact me directly at cmeabon(a)ec.rr.com Sally Close Meabon

I think that is a good point of discussion. One thing to be considered is where your line originated from. I have noticed on the CLOSE mailing list--and no doubt on the message boards also--there seem to be at least two points of origin. One being England and another Germany.
My ancestor, Leonard Melchior Kloss, was born in Germany and migrated to the USA in 1738, settling in Pennyslvania. The spelling of the name was later changed, ending up as CLOSE.
