Hi Cinda, Catherine Close replied to one of my queries saying "About 1860 my family was heading to California from Illinois. But William was a frequently used name. Prior to Illinois they were in Kentucky, prior to that Maryland, and that is my brick wall. But it is clear they couldn't stay still." Catherine Close caclose(a)sbcglobal.net She is trying to do a DNA of Close's and I have requested it. I am getting impatient with not being able to get thru this wall. It seems William Close was a very common name among the Close's making tracing them pretty hard. Hope this helps.
Tim Close

I have a John Close of North Salem, NY born 1809 married Mary Rapelye in
1850.
Both the names of John and Mary are quite common making it hard to discern.

Hello All,
Its amazing how many John Closes there are. Mine came from England to NY in 1833. Born about 1810 and married Maria Jenkins in 1835. His middle name as was rumored through the family was Ackley, but I now believe it to be Arkley after seeing an actual copy of the marriage record. I also see a John Close online whose mother's maiden name was Arkley. This family also spent some time in Buffalo and in Canada, near Toronto I believe.
Please chime in, if you wish, with any questions, suggestions, or additional info. Any and all will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill Close

I don't know of any James Watson Close in my family nor did I know of any that were in Canada. My Closes came over from Dublin IRE through Galvaston, TX. One of the brother's came up to CT.
