My Close ancestors came from Grinton, the earliest researched to date is
George b abt 1690. His son Joseph was the tenant of Crackpot Hall in 1769,
he was a lead miner and farmer. Joseph's son William was living at Crackpot
in 1777. John and James were common names amongst the Close clan of Grinton
and I have a number of these in my tree but none as adults as early as 1700
- 1712

I have been researching my CLOSS relatives in North Wales and having gone
back to 1725 in Halkyn/Holywell in Flintshire, I understand that James
CLOSS(CLOAS/CLOSE) and his brother, probably John, came to the reactivated
lead mines there from Yorkshire or Derbyshire. The most likely seems
Yorkshire, where there is an absolute hotbed of CLOSE's in Grinton parish, a
lead mining area. James and John/ probably left there in 1700-1712. There
were 139 baptisms recorded in the parish between 1640 and 1708! How to make
head or tail of them? The speculation is that prior to this the "clan"
originated in Germany. Is anyone looking at the same family origins?
