My Grandfather was born in Salisbury N.B. Canada in March of 1884. His mother was Annie Close, born in Belfast Ireland in 1854. I am unable to find who is his father.
Anne came to New York from Ireland arround 1882-83. There is a family story that she came with her sister and that Annie was involved with the ships master and that he would be my grandfather's father. My grandfgather's full name is John Wyllie Close. In my search I came a cross a ship( SS State of Alabama) that came from Larne Ireland January 6,1882 with a Captain named John Wyllie.
Howevber I am unable to find out any additional information on Annie Close who relocated to Salisbury N.B. Canada in 1884 or John Wyllie. Did John Wyllie make other trips to Ireland? Did he remain in New York . I would like to get any information on Annie prior to her coming to Canada and what happen to John Wyllie after his trip from Larne to new York in 1882. I would be greatfull for any help. THANKS
Dog Tags Found In Viet Nam
On a recent "Today Show" there was a story about two men who went to Hanoi on
a business trip. The men encountered a guy selling old GI dog tags from US
servicemen who were killed during the Viet Nam War. They were disgusted by
the thought of this man profiting from the sale of these tags. Upon returning
to the US, they decided to go back to Viet Nam and purchase ALL the dog tags.
They did so, paying 19 cents per tag! They brought home several hundred tags.
The plan is to return the tags to surviving family members, when they can
find them. The process has already begun with one set being turned over to a
grieving Mom on July 4th, (coincidentally, it was on her birthday)!
These two men have set up a website, "http://www.founddogtags.com" listing
the names of all those whose tags they purchased.
If you lost friends, family, or know of someone who lost a loved one in Viet
Nam, I suggest you check out this website. If you recognize a name, there's
an e-mail address to contact these two men and to help in their efforts to
return the dogtag to it's rightful survivor. I'm sure a family member would
be eternally grateful to have such an important item returned. Please help by
checking this website. And please send the website address to everyone you
know. The more people who see the
lists, the greater the chance of returning ALL the tags to those who lost
loved ones in Viet Nam!

Hi Virginia, I'm so excited to hear from someone from the Close side of my family. My Great Great Grandfather was John Frederick Close and I couldn't find and info on his parents. My Grandmother Emily Close died in 1985 (at 85) and my dad doesn't seem to know any of the history. So i've been checking the internet for the past year and you're the first person to respond. Thank you so much! I didn't have a name to place on that Great great great grandparent. But I do have a picture of Tompkins Close and Sally Dole Reynolds, I just didn't know how they were related. I can mail or email you a copy.Do you have any more info on that line of the Close side of the family? I would love anything you can give me and anything I can give you. Please let me know and Thank you again. Debi Lent Cooney Email me at tecooney(a)aol.com
John Frederick Close's parents were Tompkins Close, Jr. born Oct. 5, 1805 in the Thompkins Close House in Greenwich, CT. That's where my father, Everett Reynolds Close, Jr. was born too. John Frederick's wife was Sally Doel Reynolds, who was born April 13, 1814.
My father traced this branch of the Close family to "Goodman" Close.
Albert and Gladys married 20 Feburary 1908. One child Nadene Cora Close born 30 December, 1908 in Newkirk , OK.
