George Close (b abt.1784, St.Andrew Auckland, Durham, d.6 Dec 1872, St.Helen Auckland, Durham) married Ann Rowell (b abt.1792, St.Andrew Auckland, d.12 Mar 1832, St.Helen Auckland) 14 May 1812 in St.Andrew Auckland. Both are buried in the St.Helen Auckland Church cemetery, burial # 3143.
INTEREST 1: I would like to trace the antecedents and siblings of both George and Ann.
The IGI records list seven children from the marriage of George and Ann:
1) Thomas Close, chr 19 Sep 1813, St.Andrew Auckland.
2) Jonathan Thomas Close, chr 26 Dec 1814, St.Andrew Auckland, d.30 Dec 1868, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.
3) Mary Anne Close, chr. 22 Mar 1818, St.Helen Auckland.
4) George Close, chr. 13 Apr 1819, St.Helen Auckland.
5) John Robert Close, chr. 6 May 1823, St.Helen Auckland, d. 1888, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (my g.grandfather).
6) Jane Close, chr. 19 Dec 1824, St.Helen Auckland.
7) Catherine Close, chr. 3 Sep 1827, St.Helen Auckland.
INTEREST 2: Other than Jonathan Thomas and John Robert, I know nothing about the other children's lives and their descendants.
John Robert Close and his wife Ann Rachel Munson had six children, all born in Hamilton, Ontario.
One son, George John Close (b1859, d.23 Feb 1925) emigrated to Chicago c1891 with his wife, Kathleen Gibson. With the help of a Chicago researcher, I have been able to establish the names and birth dates of five children, three of which died in childhood, probably as the result of long-term urban poverty.
However, two of George's and Kathleen's sons, George H.N.Close (b.18 Feb 1886, Hamilton) and Harry George Close (b.12 Nov 1891, Chicago, d.28 Jun 1964, Los Angeles) survived and appear to have prospered. Unfortunately, I have been unable to trace the descendents of these two individuals.
The last reference I have found with respect to George H.N., a dentist, was a Texas birth registration establishing the birth of a George Edward Close, b16 Jan 1932 in Cameron County, the son of George and Anna Jessie Leonardson. Previous to Anna George H.N.was married to Marguerite E. Petrie, no record of children.
All I know of Harry George is that he was born in Chicago and died in Los Angeles.
INTEREST 3: Tracing the descendents and lives of both George H.N.Close and Harry George Close.

Hi Sarah and Listers,
I would love to see this list become active!
I have a lot of lines to the Thomas Close descendants of New England, but I also have a most aggravating brick wall that may be from another line.
Johnathon Close was born June 16, 1803 and died August 5, 1834 in Tioga County, New York. He married Eliza Sager, who was born September 21, 1806 and died September 1, 1834 in Tioga County, New York. Eliza was the daughter of Henry Sager and Hannah Gee. I can trace Hannah but not Henry.
Tioga County borders Pennsylvania. I have long wondered if Johnathon Close and Henry Sager were of German origin and migrated to Tioga from eastern Pennsylvania.
Any additional clue will be most welcome.

No apoligies necessary, Linda. Thank you for making the list aware of
this free
trial. I took advantage of a free trial several months ago and liked it
so well,
I became a member so I could have access to all the databases at
Ancestry.com.
Have found some useful information.
I would encourage everyone to go to the following URLs periodically and
do searches
on the names of your ancestors. I have found several cousins this way.
I try to
do a new search at least once a month to find any new submissions.
Access to the
family files which have been submitted is free. Many of the gedcoms can
be
downloaded.

If anyone knows of any other useful sites which would help us in our
research,
please don't hesitate to let us know.

My CLOSE line was not always spelled with a 'C'. When my ancestors
arrived from Germany it was spelled KLOSS. I will give you here what I
started out with when I started researching on the internet two years
ago. This was information compiled by my late uncle about 20 years ago
and I didn't come into possession of it until 1993 when my mother passed
away and I began to care for my father.
It begins: >>>This history begins with the arrival of Leonard Melchior
Kloss in America on Sept. 9, 1738. He left his home at Esling, Alburn,
Wittenberg, Germany which is in the Province of Saxony, on the Elbe
River. (It was here that Martin Luther mailed his 95 theses on the door
of the church.) He left from the Port of Rotterdam taking with him his
wife, Margretta (Margaret) and his two year old Son Ernst (Ernest); they
sailed aboard the British ship "Glasgow" captained by Walter Sterling,
in the Spring of 1738.
Upon their arrival in the Port of Philadelphia on Sept. 9, 1738 they
were promptly administered the Oath of Allegiance to Great Britain.
On March 18, 1776, at the age of 70 Melchior Kloss became a private
soldier in Capt. Henry, Jr's Company, Berks County, Pa. Ref. --Penn.
Archives 2nd Series Vol. 10, page 240. His name appears in the list of
Revolutionary soldiers in Pennsylvania. Ref. Penn. Archives, 2nd
Series, Vol. 13, page 39.
Melchior Kloss made a property return in Maxatawny Township Berks
County, Pa. March 18, 1776. Ref. Penn. Archives, 3rd Series, Vol. 118,
page 41. He paid Federal tax in Towmaneeneing Township.
Ernest, the son of Melchior Kloss was born in Germany in the year 1736,
as already indicated, and emigrated to America along with his father and
mother in the year 1738. Ernest also served in the Revolutionary Army,
serving as a private 4th class, 8th Company, Capt. Joseph Siegrried,
Northampton Co. Pa. Oct. 3, 1781. Ref. Penn. Archives, 5th Series, Vol.
8, page 497. Also, General Muster Roll Penn. Archives, 5th Series, Vol.
8, page 239.
He married Catherine Suter, who was born April 24, 1741. She bore him
the following children: Aaron, Solomon, Daniel, Jonathan, Gideon, Jacob
and Abraham. Aaron and Jonathan settled in Southern Ohio; Solomon,
Daniel, Jacob and Abraham settled in Untion County, that part which is
now Snyder Co., Pa. Gideon settled in Philadelphia.
Ernest, who died in 1805 was preceeded by his wife who died in 1798.
Both are buried in the Old Lutheran Cemetery at Selingsgrove, Pa. Their
graves are unmarked.
Jacob Klose, son of Ernest Kloss, was born about 1761 or 2. He was
first married to Catherine Troutman, daughter of Wilhelm Trautmann who
came to America in 1752 aboard the ship "Neptune"; he died in 1790. In
his will he named his son-in-law, Jacob, as heir to his estate.
Jacob, as well as his grandfather, Melchior and father, Ernest, served
in the Army of the Revolution thus, entitling any descendant to belong
to the Sons or Daughters of the American Revolution. Jacob served as
8th class in the 8th Company, Capt. Adam Diehl's 6th Battallion,
Northampton Co. Pa. Oct. 26, 1780. Ref. - Penn. Archives 5th Series
Vol. 8, page 445. He served as private in Capt. Adam Steller's Company
of Malitia in action on the front.
The following was copied from "The History of the Susquehanna and Julian
Valley", published in 1886 at Philadelphia by Everts, Peck & Richards,
Vol. 2, page 1587.
"Jacob Klose was a resident of Snyder County and among his children
were: Solomon, Daniel, and Jacob. His wife's name was Catherine
Troutman". The history continues with the family records of the three
sons which we do not quote, here. There was also born to him by this
wife a daughter, named Mary, and one named Rebecca.
After his wife, Catherine, died he married again, marrying a Mary
Narhood, widow of Henry Narhood; this wife bore him a daughter whom he
named Sophia, she was under age at the date of his death in 1822, she
was born in 1804.<<<
The names Leonard Melchior, Ernest, Jacob and Daniel were underlined. I
assume he meant them as our line of descent. On another section he had
drawn a pedigree chart of Eli MOLL and Elizabeth SCHOCH and their
descendants. Sarah Catharine MOLL, daughter of Eli and Elizabeth,
married Levi CLOSE. This is where the CLOSE, MOLL, and SCHOCH lines are
connected.
In my searching and queries I have found others connected to Leonard
Melchior, Ernest, Jacob and some of the other sons, but so far none that
have a Daniel or Levi. Guess you might say that is my brick wall. If
anyone knows anything on any of the above, I would like to hear from
you.

Hello List:
Having just recently started tracking down my paternal
roots--CLOSE/KLOSS--I noticed that the CLOSE list was up for adoption so
decided to adopt it. As the List Administrator I am here to help you
with any problems you may have in subscribing, unsubscribing, etc. with
the list. Most of this is done automatically with the computer at
RootsWeb but should a request not be understood by their computer or if
one is just addressed to the List Administrator it will be sent to me.
If you have any problems at all with your subscription, please don't
hesitate to email me.
As to CLOSE research, please try to post as much as possible to the
List. I, like you, am searching also, and will be asking for your help,
too.
Having said this, I would like to call for a ROLL-CALL from everyone,
letting us know what your interests are. From reading through the
archives, I notice there are CLOSEs from England and some from France.
Mine came from Germany. The original spelling was KLOSS, then KLOSE
and finally to CLOSE. Will post more details in separate message.
I am looking forward to working with everyone on the list in your quest
for your ancestors.

Hi!
Sarah, congratulations for becoming the new list administrator.
I'm searching for my paternal grandmother's family. My grandmother, Mary
Adeline Close, was born in Philipsburg, Centre County, PA in 1903. Her
parents were Emma Jane Varner and George Calvin Close (some records refer to
his first name as Calvin). I don't know anything else about her family. If
anybody is researching her line, I'd love to hear from you!

I want to apologize for passing this along. A few people seem to have able to
access this and take advantage, but it seems that most of us (including
myself) have not. This offer was through a MyFamily.Com Bargain Newsletter. I
replied to the original email, I have emailed MyFamily.Com and I have emailed
Ancestry.Com, explaining that we have not been able to access, and I have
heard nothing back from any of them. Again I apologize and if I hear
something back I will pass it along to you.

Thought some of you might like to take advantage of this.
