Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Did William have any sisters or brothers? Do you know his parents?
I have been at a standstill in my Close family. My mother was born to Clarence Collins and Mary Margaret Close. I have his family line back to 1699 in DE but can't even find the parents of Mary Close
I know she had a brother Douglas (died of blood poisoning, young)
Sister Jessie Close m. Swann and lived in Dallas City, IL
Brother Bill m. Mary ? had a son Paul, dau. Celest(e) and a dau. everyone called "Nookie" and My mom remembers them living on Monument St. in Alton, IL.
Also she remembers an Uncle Lige (Elijah) Close (Her uncle or her mother's?} Also had a sister Nan who married a Harvey ? Nan and Mary were part indian we know but not sure of the other siblings....does any of this ring any bells?
Hello All:
I have noticed that sometimes people will subscribe to a mailing list
and never post a query. I must admit I am guilty of this at times.
Also, if they do post, they will unsubscribe shortly after. I would
like to pass along something that happened to me, hoping it will
encourage you to hang in there, even if you are just lurking, and keep
abreast of what is being posted to the mailing lists or at least visit
the Archives of a list.
Recently, in looking through the digests of the mailing lists I am on I
noticed a subject line which really grabbed me. I had posted my query
to this list over a year ago and had received some response with helpful
advice, etc. However, in the longest time there hadn't been anything
which was helpful to me. This time it was different. The subject line
which jumped out at me contained the main information concerning my
grandfather. In follow-up emails to the person making the post, I found
out she was searching for information on the father of her adopted dad
which also turned out to be my grandfather. To make a long story short,
I found a half-uncle I never knew I had. He is late mother's
half-brother, something my mother wasn't aware of. Seems my grandfather
had left shortly after my mother was born and everyone thought he was
dead until he appeared on the scene again about the time my mother
married. He was married again and stayed married to this person until
his death about 30 years later. However, between his marriage to my
grandmother and the last marriage there appears to be a skeleton in the
closet, or as my youngest daughter called it, dirty laundry. Seems that
about six years after my mother was born my grandfather had a mock
marriage with someone and a few years later a son was born. My
grandfather was going by his mother's maiden name at the time.
I now have someone else who is helping me search for information on my
grandfather's ancestors. So---hang in there and don't lose hope. You
never know what you will find.

Hi, everybody:
Passing along another helpful message I received from another list.
RootsWeb has solved a technical problem, making the threaded archives
for
mailing lists available again. This might be a good time to practice
using
them, so you know what is there. By the way, you do not need to be a
subscriber to a list to view its archives. Keep this in mind as you
contemplate joining another list (or a bunch of lists, if you have the
time
<grin>). You can browse the archives and see if it seems like a good
group.
If there are very few messages, then by all means subscribe and liven up
the joint!
There are two types of archives:
----------
One presents messages in groups, by month, and then within the months by
connected message threads. The threaded archives are at:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/
Rather than select by first letter, the easier way is to type the name
of
the list in the box and click "Submit Query". Use only the name of the
list
(upper or lower case) and do not include the -L or the -D. For example
smith (or Smith, or SMITH) -- *NOT* SMITH-L, and *NOT* SMITH-D
----------
The second type of archives is indexed by the words contained in the
header
and the subject. These archives are at:
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
For these archives there is no selection by first letter, but "Submit
Query" works the same as the threaded archives, with one exception. In
this
case any one of the following will work, for example:
smith Smith SMITH SMITH-L SMITH-D
----------
All these examples assume the existence of the "SMITH-L(a)rootsweb.com"
mailing list. It does, by the way; exist, that is. I am *not* the admin
for
that list, in case you are wondering.

Hello all
I received this note on another list and thought it would be appropriate
for all the lists I administer.
I like it and hope everyone will take a moment and reflect on it and
think
where were your ancestors (200+ years ago) a week before Christmas.
Cheers and Happy holidays
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It is that time of year again when we suddenly will have an influx of
new
on-line genealogy enthusiasts with their holiday gift computers that are
usually newer and faster than what many of the rest of us have.
For a great many of them, it will be their first time on-line. Some of
them will make mistakes and some may (will) unintentionally do things
and
write things that may be irritating to us and against what we have set
up
as our list rules. Please take this into consideration in advance and be
helpful to them. If things get out of hand, know that I am behind the
scenes taking care of the problems. Just remember, one of these new
members
might hold the clue you have been searching for. Let us not discourage
them
before they have a chance to learn how this works.
I would like also to take this time to wish each of you and yours a
wonderful and safe Holiday Season.

Looking for information about The Close & Patterson Variety Hall in Las Vegas, NM apx 1878-81. Noted to be a First Class Dance Hall & Saloon. The Las Vegas Optic reports; noted for its masquerade balls & woodland scenery painted by Munsch, from back East. On Feb. 7th, 1880 there appeared : ALL THE DANCE HALL GIRLS TO BE BAPTIZED
SUNDAY
THE MILLENNIUM HAS COME
the story goes on to tell how they were all baptized in the back room by a visiting Missionary.
The owners were George Close formally THE GEORGE CLOSE DANCE HALL, in El Moro, CO. and Billy Patterson formally THE BILLY PATTERSON SALOON in La Junta, CO.
They were known to be "track followers" which is apparantly why their establishment was across from the Depot & why they left Las Vegas shortly after the railroad also pulled out.
If this George Close sounds familar I would like to hear from you I am researching Patterson.
Thank you
Tela Patterson
