Seeking connections to Ethel Helen Clore, born August 1878 in Madison County, VA. She married Silas Murray Wilhoite (born 1869 in Buena Vista), with whom she had six children: Julia, Susan Helen (Sherie), Clore, Oliver, Samuel and Gertrude Pauline Wilhoite. Daughter Julia was supposedly born in Virginia in 1897; no forther information regarding their lives prior to 1900, when--surprise!--they resided in Dutchess County, NY. The race of this Clore/Wilhoite family has been recorded as "black" and "negro" in 1900 and 1910, "mulatto" and "white" in the 1920 and 1930 census, though oral tradition claims Native American (Cherokee) ancestry.
Which Elijah Cloar/Cloer/Clore/Clor are making reference to? I put the
names as I did because the surname Cloer is spelled many dif. ways within
the same family. So far we have Cloer and Cloar and my dad's cousin said
our gg-grandfather (his grandfather), George Merit Cloer, said he spelled
his name Clore when he came from Va to TN.
Please visit our website and go to the Cloer webpage. Let us know if we are
talking about the same Elijah Cloer or even if there are any other common
ancestors there.
Our Cloers came from Va to NC and then to TN, and GA. Many are from Murray
County GA, and Cherokee County and Murphy County in NC. Our Cloers lived
primarily in Polk County TN but also in Bradley, McMinn, and others.

I have recently been in touch with an elderly member of my family who
is a great granddau. of Wm. H. MARIOTT and Matilda FERRELL/FERRILL [b.
1819; d. 1901; believed to be the dau. of Byrum and Sally CLOR/CLOAR].
. This woman has lived in the area all her life, and has history
This woman is now 86, [sharp as a tack] and tells me that when her
uncle [son of Wm. and Matilda] was almost grown, Matida FERRELL MARIOTT
asked her son to 'go back to Tennessee and see about an inheritance
that she was due to get."
The marriage record, says: Sally Clor to Birrum Ferrill Sumner Co., TN
on 15 March 1808.
HISTORY OF THE CLOAR FAMILY
(The following account is taken from the old Union City, Tennessee
Commercial, February 18, 1921)
Bynum Ferrill settled at Comba Springs. There were four daughters,
Harriet, Elizabeth, Mary and Matilda, and a son, James, and another, I
don’t remember. Harriet married a James and lived near Hickman. Jesse
Cloar, a brother of John Cloar, also moved to this county about the
same time. His oldest daughter married Dick Mosier and raised a large
family. Uncle Elijah Cloar came to this country later on and settled in
the same neighborhood. He had two sons, Green and John, who were in the
civil war four years and were fortunate enough to get back home. Green
Cloar is still living in this county, is ninety years of age and in
good health.
NOW, I'm trying to figure out whether it was the CLOR/CLOAR family or
the FERRELL/FERRILL family who had the inheritance for her. Matilda's
father died in Texas betw. 1860-1870. Bynum/Birrum FERRELL/FERRILL mar.
again in 1830 in Kentucky. So, I am suspecting that it was on the CLOAR
side, which means either her mother [doubtful] or her grandpa CLOAR's
estate.
Does anyone have any probate records that mention a dau., or granddau.,
MATILDA FERRELL/FERRILL MARRIOTT/MARIOTT?? I am not that familiar with
Tenn. and Kentucky counties and area, so would appreciate any direction.
Thanks for any help!
Lanita
I Should have asked them BEFORE they died!
