It's hard to imagine that there were two Martin Cloptons in the same county since the name was so unusual unless they are cousins. If you take the facts at face value, it would appear that there were two Martins. Are you descended from Hugh Clopton, the son of Elizabeth and Martin? I have no Clopton ancestors. I just wanted to determine what happened to the Bates who was divorced from Elizabeth Johnson between 1844 and 1848. He would be my great-great grandfather.
On the page below, under "Sources" on the left, you will see my name (Barbara Bates) mentioned a few times. A Clopton researcher contacted me several years ago. He is quoting a letter from Jess Bates to me regarding the year Martin died (1853). I take this with a grain of salt as my great uncle Jess wasn't quite all there. According to him, Martin drowned in 1853 while trying to prevent Elizabeth from leaving. My grandmother said he died of typhoid--not quite as dramatic, but sounds closer to the truth. I had heard that Martin and Elizabeth divorced which would be her second. That would be quite scandalous in those days, so who knows if the facts were covered up or altered? She and her children moved to Texas in 1853 where she married again. Is this where you got the info about Elizabeth's divorce and moving out of state? If so, that's why it sounds familiar to me since I supplied it.

I don't think we've ever talked. Would love to! All of my info came from the Alabama State Archives - just trying to determine the differences between the two Martins so they don't get their documents crossed.

I am descended from Elizabeth. You and I have probably communicated in the distant past because this looks like info I've provided. Elizabeth's son James Kelton Bates is my great-grandfather. I've never been able to find his father, Elizabeth's first husband.
