My ancestor Ephraim Stroup is said to have been disinherited by his father Eli Stroup. At the time of the 1850 federal census, Ephraim, wife and one daughter are in the household of Philip CLONINGER in Gaston Co., NC, causing some to speculate that Ephraim's mother was Philip's daughter.
(Ephraim's wife was Nancy Queen, and not the connection)
Two of Ephraim Stroup's uncles married Cloninger women as well:
David Stroup m. Ann CLONINGER 9-14-1821, Lincoln Co. NC, and
Jonas Stroup m. Rebeckah CLONINGER 11-25-1821.
No marriage bond has been found for Eli's first marriage. He married Elizabeth Shetley in 1828, after the (presumed) death of Ephraim's mother.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF ANN AND REBECKAH CLONINGER WERE DAUGHTERS OF PHILIP? OR POSSIBLY HIS SISTERS?

There are several reasons, I think, that Elizabeth Clemmer who married
Jacob Cloninger didn't use the name Hancock as her surname.
The marriage between Margaret Clemmer and William M. Hancock was
relatively short, less than 8 years. They married in 1792 in Rowan Co.,
NC, and by 1800 Margaret is alone (with her children) in Lincoln Co.
After Hancock died, Margaret left Rowan and moved to Lincoln Co. where
her adult children by Felty Clemmer had relocated from PA.
Since Margaret didn't have a son by Hancock, it really didn't matter
what surname the girls went by because it would change upon marriage
anyway. I think Margaret went back to using the surname Clemmer (1)
because she was more accustomed to it, (2) to be more readily identified
with her adult Clemmer children, and (3) because she was living in the
German community, to have a German surname. Elizabeth and Mollie were
very young children when their father died. Elizabeth was about 6 and
Mollie was probably just a baby.
The "Our Kin" community knew about the Hancock marriage, but since the
girls used the Clemmer surname, over time the community forgot that it
was Margaret Clemmer who had remarried, not Felty. By the time Hoffman
recorded this information, it was a hundred years later.

Jean -
Excuse me but this post dis confusing - How can Elizabeth Clemmer be the
daughter of William Hancock and still be surnamed "Clemmer"?
I know that sort of thing happens now a days but then?

Hello, everyone,
Here is a Cloninger update. Elizabeth Clemmer who married Jacob
Cloninger, Sr. was actually the daughter of William M. Hancock and
Margaret Dettero (Totherow) Clemmer Hancock. Margaret Clemmer (widow of
Valentine Clemmer) and William M. Hancock married on March 1, 1792 in
Rowan County, NC. Hoffman was close in "Our Kin". He just had it
backwards.
For those of you who will ask for the source documents, please look at
the archived messages for the Clemmer-L mailing list. Just search for
the name Hancock. You'll get the entire discussion.
I think Hoffman also got it backwards about Felty Clemmer moving to TN.
I just received an 1830 Monroe County, TN census lookup request for John
Clemmer, Felty's son. Listed is a female 70-80 years old. I think she
is Margaret Dettero Clemmer Hancock. She can't be John Clemmer's wife's
mother. Elizabeth Shetley Hoffman is known to have died the day after
her husband, Jacob Hoffman, Jr., and to be buried in Lincoln Co., NC.

Hello Fellow Cloningers,
Could anyone out there help me? I've been searching for info on my gr-gr
grandfather, William Cloninger. All the info I have is from the 1880
Arkansas census. My gr-gr grandmother, Sarah, remarried in 1889, so I
don't know what happened to William. I don't even know where he came
from. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Dear Cloninger Clan,
Maybe you can enlighten me about my missing Cloningers in the 1850 GA
Census. I have documented my George in both directions except for
1850. Hope someone can suggest ways to locate him, especially various
spellings. Thanks!
